The Thread on the back let's you screw it into the gearbox and keeps the clutch pack on the hydraulic pump. The 4 outer holes where you put the "tool" in is for the special clutch-tool so you can screw the pack into the box.

Now that was interesting. I always wondered what my DCT looks like inside - there is very little information available. And what a shame that BWM stopped using this brilliant gearbox. I just love mine.

I'm surprised at how straight forward that seemed. But I guess there is still the rest of the trans that is probably crazy intimidating like a Turbo 400 is IMHO. I've watched the Deboss channel do a couple videos on a Chevy Auto trans at a trans shop. I was completely freaked out by watching that and amazed at the shop owners abilities to just do all his work and up grades by memory and feel. This seems much more sane. LOL. But still not something I'd want to dabble with personally. Great video again Andrew!

I think a dct is at the core more simple than an auto. However the mechatronics is much more intelligent. So more basic mechanical side but more complex electronics than a auto

You dont need the tool, but it can make install/removal easier :) Threaded part is to mount the clutch pack in the transmission besically. Also be careful not to mix the C-clips, they are different thickness!

Ahhhhh good to know. The two that were our were different diameters so should be right. What do you recommend for clutch upgrades?

@@ZeroTo60Tube I use SSP :) Also sent you a PM! The reason for the steel plates being so thick is to cope with heat basically, with thinner aftermarket clutches they can handle more power, but are more sensetive to overheating. (which you shouldnt do anyway, but can be good to keep in mind)

I have rebuilt many Audi DCT,s just pay attention to detail and if you have a local machine shop see if they can balance it. Also remember make sure it's clean and then go back and make sure it's clean again. You got it mate No worries.

@@ZeroTo60Tube when I disassemble Audi DCT clutch packs I look at the way the clutches are sitting.Audi the clutches sit a certain way not sure on BMWs. Ihave not taken a DCTapart on one and redone it. And yes the clutch pack.

This dct clutch reminds me of how a drag system on a fishing reel woks, one stack spins and the other is fixed and the discs get sandwiched together

To be fair very similar to the automatic clutch. These are also a wet clutch like the autos. I did a series on a dct swap. That documented the removal process. But I can’t remember the exact vid. But search for dct swap and it will there

@@ZeroTo60Tube thanks for the reply. I used to rebuild automatic transmissions years ago in our Indy shop, but these things are a different animal. Right now my DTC in throwing a code and I've lost 1st and 3rd. I've read that it is most likely a wiring issue at the plug, but you have to pull the trans to to anything other than change the fluid and in trying to decide it I'm brave enough to tackle it in my home garage our pay someone to do it for me. Just happened upon your channel today. I asked this question on one of your older videos regarding the DCT, but I'll ask here as well. I'm planning on the DCT swap on my e39 540i, and I ditched the DMF for a 15.7lb/7.1Kg SMF from TTV Racing, I should be able to retain my flywheel correct?

Hey i have a questionn but not about this video.. i just got an e39 M5 and i tried coding with carly but mine is an 1999 and it cant be done cause its not a facelift. So what would you recomand with can i do some coding (obd1)? And i am in Europe so i dont know if there are some differences. Thank you. And keep this awesome channel going🤘 (i miss the e39 content)

While I'm not familiar with the European e39 M5, here in the USA it would be an OBD2 car. Have you tried reaching out to Dima with DUDMD? He's a great tuner for the e39. Did great work on my e39 540i.

That was fascinating. I didn’t expect automatic cars to be fun to look at, I was always intrigued by stickshift cars. I will say this much you make look fun to own an auto car. I’m sure this will help the DIY guy at home who ever comes across this problem. I used to work with a mechanic that all he worked on was on transmissions, it is still complicated but he made it look easy the way you did. All I gotta say is keep kicking ass! Also I have a question about fuses for my 335i, it keeps saying communication to the water pump. Do you believe it’s a fuse because I replaced it 3 times already and the same thing keeps coming up?

@@ZeroTo60Tube growing up I always saw people driving stickshift that I always wanted to be the best that I could while driving stickshift. But I have seen muscle cars end up being automatic. I know a guy who made his corvette 800hp + and ended making that into an auto. I was kinda sad because it was a legit stickshift from the factory. I was disappointed because I knew times where changing. When I used to work for a tree company, we had to drop off a truck for work. We got lucky that it was next to a shop with race cars. I told the dude how my 335i was down only because he had one parked outside. He ended letting me drive the car and it was auto but modded, through out the whole time inertia of the car had my neck pushed back. That had never happened on my 335i, even when I had downpipes. That’s when I learned autos where really fast. Seeing as to how you have done your car I can just imagine the inertia you have on your 335i that being when you are hooking. Those cars where the reason Toyota wanted BMWs help for the new Supra. Not to mention these autos are kinda fun. Expensive yes, but you are a gifted man my friend. So don’t mind the set backs.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I bet, I never owned an auto car but if I ever do, it will have to be a B58. It’s hard to find an n54 that doesn’t have major issues. And from the factory the supras or any b58 already come equipped with index 12 and basically over 400 hp. If you watch this one KZbinr, he recently bought a Supra and it had more Hp and TQ then the manufacturer said. That being said, I doubt I want to be in debt with 40k plus but if I where to ever do so that might be the way to go.

Maybe you can help, I bought a 2019 M4 with small accident. Fixed the car, but now when I drive the DCT slips on all odd gears. Car only has 18k miles. In the accident the DCT cooler was damaged, so I replaced it and did a fluid flush using ISTA. No improvement. Can it be the clutch with only 18k miles? Wha

If the dct was ran low on oil its very possible the clutch was damaged due to low oil pressure. You can try resetting DCT adaptations, but i would hazzard a guess you need a clutch.

I havent had the chance to play with any upgraded ones myself as yet, so can't recomend anything with experience. But there are plenty of options out there and they all have to be better than stock surely.

for the cost of a dct clutch upgrade you can do a whole 8hp swap and be faster. haha. its pretty easy to rebuild the getrag dct boxes, its the cost that kills.
