Neutral as a concept can be misleading for newer players in fighting games in general. Neutral is a STATE or PHASE of the game. As zero explains, it's the phase where you figure out how you can start your offensive pressure, which is the ideal position for you, because that's the game you know how to play with your character/the one you can practice. Since neutral is a loose concept every time you play a new person, learning to take note of what they do on the spot is ideal, and the skill you want to develop. Most top players in any fighting game have their consistent ways of winning neutral, whether it be through their character, or their own prowess. Don't be frustrated when you lose, because there are certain play-styles perhaps that you may have never adapted to or have seen. Play to learn, not to win, because when you play to learn, you can win against a wider variety of people and understand why.

TL;DW: 1.) Don't worry about spacing, only nerds try to space. 2.) Dash dancing is okay, but rolling lets you move with invincibility. You should be rolling around most of the time. 3.) If your character has a strong projectile, don't use it. No one enjoys fighting a spammer. 4.) If your character has a counter, then you really shouldn't be using any other move(s). After all, counters beat other moves. 5.) Charge smash attacks whenever possible. Your opponents will eventually run into them. 6.) Finally, remember that the ledge gives you invincibility, so make sure to stay by the edge and avoid center stage whenever possible. Weaker players won't recognize this and will try to stay in the center of the stage, so don't be fooled.

extra life imo that matchup is a lot more even than you might think. If the Mewtwo plays more defensive/reactive, his tail attacks (side tilt, down tilt, up tilt, up air, b-air) shut down a lot of their approach options. It’s only when the Mewtwo plays like they want every moment to be highlight reel material and they rush in a lot that Pikachu/Pichu shut them tf down.

Understanding Neutral and how to condition opponents so you can take advantage of them is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of Smash. Really nice guide. From how I understood it (going for a different approach of explaining it) is that it's essentially "reactive counters" or "thought counters" that's all about your micro mechanical skills coming to life. You adapt to continuously counter the other player's moves before they even make a move as well as make sure they can't counter you. It's a basic philosophy I've tried teaching my friends several times playing say a MOBA or MMO PvP, even if a MOBA has waaaaaaay less options to play differently than a fighter game, but playing against casuals it works well. The idea is the same though that if you learn to read your enemy's playstyle and know how characters are generally played, you can adapt with whichever character you have (even if it's UP and countered) by adapting and throwing the enemy off guard. It's kinda psychological gameplay which can only come from playing a lot, it's really hard to truly teach it to someone other than plant a seed in people's mind and then they can develop it by being aware of it, until it's how they think during their gameplay. I never thought of calling it "neutral" in this scenario, which makes sense given in that moment you're both on neutral grounds. Whatever you're doing at that time (jumping, dashing, etc) is a prelude to someone actually landing a hit, and it's the mind game of how to land a hit which is the idea, and mastering this mind game of trying to predict the enemy and do the opposite in how you play is the key to winning neutral play. Then also by adding the fact you can try get into the other player's mind by deliberately playing a certain way, only to bait a certain playstyle out of them so you can gain from it is something on the next level of advancement that's pretty darn amazing when you think about it. You can take this into some other games in multiplayer even if they play differently (although fighter games I believe it has the biggest and most important impact) and once you understand the concept, it's how you can get really good when playing against players. This is also why playing against players is so much more fun than AI, cause each player is a unique individual and the strategy is to get into their mind, but AI often just play like the other AI, they don't plan ahead nor can you throw them off based on their reaction or planning, they'll react based on concrete facts and data which no player can. Which is why playing against AI, even for practicing, can give you bad habits since you may lose this mind game mentality that's very important to succeed in PvP.

that's called autopiloting, and it's typically a pretty bad habit. You might want to save replays and watch what you do and analyze what you did wrong and what you should have done, when youre not in a pressured environment, and try to apply it to your future games. And while youre doing that, try to apply that same analysis skills midgame, and try to think things like "why am i getting grabbed all the time? maybe i should try spot dodging" or something like that
@nitenite89466 жыл бұрын
I suffered from the same thing for SOOOO long. The only things that broke mgs out of the habit were: 1. Playing more. 2. Playing different characters. 3. Slowing it down in practice sessions. When facing good zoning players (good Lucas, Samus, any Link, etc), I constantly find myself suffering from projectiles and when I finally manage to get close, I get grabbed or smashed away and my opponent gets enough time to run away and continue the zoning process.

I bought one. And it helps tremendously. I hated playing online. But it smooths it out. There's some matches where they're clean and some a bit delayed but not like how it was before where you move every 5 seconds lol

This might be a stupid question, but how is he controlling the cpu?
@CD_30746 жыл бұрын
There's a guy to the right of him who you can see the arm of with a controller and he's controlling it as you can set the CPU to control in training mode (which means you can use another controller to control it).

Playing neutral in fighting games has the same principles as combat sports - which has the same principles as all other sports. There is a likely move to be made, and you have the option to select countermoves. How fast you can predict and respond correctly to your opponent is what separates the amateurs from the pros. It's kinda cool to see how it's all connected. Musashi-style: from one thing, know ten thousand things.

So would it be a good strategy to bait your opponent to attack and use counter when they do?
@JoroTheSpaz6 жыл бұрын
Da Masked Lucas TAKE THIS INFORMATION WITH A GRAIN OF SALT SINCE I’M A SCRUB. Counter is risky, but I guess you could use it after baiting them to attack. But like ZeRo said in the video, there is no one unbeatable strategy. After you’ve countered, where do you go from there? If the bait fails, what can you do next? There is no one way to answer that. You can manipulate and bait your opponent, but you also have to play around them rather than forcing something onto them constantly. Always adapt to them, as they will also adapt to you.
@duskcus6 жыл бұрын
The reason u dont see this in pro play is cus high risk low reward
@inari32176 жыл бұрын
Unless they're at high percentage (and a counter will net you a kill) counter will just deal a regular ammount of damage and knock them really far away, which doesn't really put you at an advantage so i wouldnt really call it a good neutral tool
@WhatIsMyPorpoise6 жыл бұрын
Thats why dashdancing is a thing. Every time he dashes towards you is a threat of an attack. React with a counter and the opponent will grab you(and combo you). Of course, not everyone is good and so, to new players, counter looks op.
@WhatIsMyPorpoise6 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on how you set the situation

Awesome video on neutral! Covered the fundamentals really well. If you take requests I would highly appreciate a video on how to avoid: getting camped, projectile spammed and juggled. Since im coming from melee into ultimate I noticed alot more passive play that I am unsure of the counterplay of. I know the concept of camping is in melee with ledgestalling but you can counter that quite easily.
