4:38 I know it. You have it bad balanced. It is not a problem. The clamp where phone is placed....you should move it vertically, there are two rails behind the clamp that can slide vertically. It is very easy, please, prove it. It is not a problem

Sure, we moved it all around. Slid it to every configuration we could figure out. Might need a counterweight for these larger phones as it’s top heavy, which would be disappointing. Still testing.

iPhoneographers did you find a solution to the phone? I have an iPhone XR with also the 18mm lens and trying to balance it as well. Also I think my red latch was placed wrong. When I tighten it, it is almost vertical which seems like it would get in the way as the phone is moving with the motions. You’re seems to be at the 3-4 o’clock and mine is at the 12..weird

Your phone is to long and to heavy to work in phone position ( small slot). The center of gravity must be changed . Move the screw in the large slot, in compact camera position. Important is : Your phone holder must be in the middle of the phone. In video I see the holder in one corner of the phone (1" from the edge) and so you will never balanced the phone. I hope it helps you and good luck.

I have a IPhoneXr with the Moment case and anamorphic lens setup. I also add a ND filter sometimes but needs to be re balanced again. It takes me a while, once balanced the red reset screw makes it remember its balanced position for next time use which is a time saver.. Maybe this gimbal may have difficulties balancing phones over 6.1in screens is what I’m thinking. I have the motor strength on medium and seems to power thru the movements with ease. I believe with the payload capacity the M2 has it should be handling any phn with lens with no added counter weights.. I really enjoy my M2 over my Zhiyun Smooth 4 any day..the modes, durability, storage position, and so compact just does it for my use. Thank you for the great video 💯 ..hopefully filmic pro integrates with the M2 ..I have t been able to connect to it some reason ✌🏽

Totally agree that it should balance a light phone easily and with no counterweights. But it does work fine once the motors are on as they are pretty strong. And the gimbal performed quite well. The footage in this video was literally the first time it was ever used, and it’s quite smooth. So yeah, this is a good gimbal and works great with compact cameras especially, and hopefully we’ll figure out the smartphone side soon, too. :) Thanks for sharing your experience.

A lot oh smartphone filmmakers are going to want to use this gimbal with a case/lens/filter setups from Moment and so on. I have been trying to use such a setup on the Crane M2 for the past few weeks and balance has been a constant problem. I’m moving counterweights to different parts of the gimbal but they often end up getting in the way of the motors. I really wish this worked but I think most people are going to find it too complicated compared to smartphone only gimbals.

I'm also using the IPhone xs max and could balance it with the phone in both directions but it is working beter (especially in vortex mode) if the camera lens are on the inside, so turn your phone around. But like you have said, it's a nightmare to balance the phone each time, so I'm only going to use my Sony rx100 iii. The extra functions doesn't work on the iii but the gimbal itself is working perfectly! Only issue is, to change the Sony's battery, you must take the mounting plate of and reballance each time, so I've ordered a angled micro USB cable to get power to the camera from the gimbal, hope it works.

Yes, this could be a good option for that. Haven’t tried counterweights but that is on the to do list. It shouldn’t need them just for a smartphone though, that’s one reason didn’t try them and they don’t come with the kit. But the payload capacity is very good for this size gimbal.

Skimmed the comments but maybe try moving the phone mount to the outboard position on the plate, and turn the phone the opposite direction, so the lens is closer to the gimbal center axis. I realize that night cause the phone holder to pinch buttons, and add-on lenses might be too low and close to the hardware. But it will theoretically keep more of the weight toward the center.

I have bought a couple of your courses so I plan to crack on with them as soon as possible while we are in this lockdown. I feel a bit annoyed I bought the DJI Osmo mobile 2 a few months ago (before I bought the iPhone 11) to later find out it’s no good for my needs.

The G6 Max will hold a mirrorless camera no problem like a Sony a6400. It holds 2.65 lbs. As a comparison the newer Osmo Mobile 3 will hold .5 lbs., so 5x more payload. It’ll hold pretty much anything you want to put on it smartphone related as it has strong motors. It’s really the best hybrid gimbal right now meaning it’ll work well with phones or smaller traditional cameras - and it’s pretty easy to use. New gimbals are released often, but right now this is our fave in its price range. Hope that helps and hope you enjoy the courses, thanks!

It would be great if you could show how you got it to balance successfully with the Moment the next day. Did you sense that the motor was stressed even though you shot with it unbalanced? I've been using the Osmo Mobile 3 and my concern is that with lenses, filters and counterweights, it's far exceeding the weak motors and while it works, it will likely burn out soon enough. I've heard so little about this gimbal with phones and it seems this would be great because there are simply no high payload phone gimbals available other than this one!

@@iphoneographers Thanks for the reply! I just bought this and it seems SO many gimbals have issues with the top heavy nature of iPhones with lenses. I did note that you don't have any counterweights which definitely help releave some of the motor stress. Just bought a Moment counterweight to see if that helps (after improvising for testing with some old weights and a bag). It seemed to work quite well. The fact that this gimbal has a screen indicating mode and access to other functions, allowing it to be operated totally "app free" is a huge plus for me. I like that I can use filmic pro without having to go to another app just to see gimbal status. That said, I'm going to take a look at your FeiyuTech video to see if that helps. As you pointed out, the weight load capacity of the M2 can EASILY handle this combo. It all comes down to center of balance! I really think you should consider doing a video comparing gimbals with wide angle ADD-ON lenses (versus anamorphic or built in ultra wide because they are far lighter). This really is one of the biggest issues using gimbals. I used the OM3 and while it worked, it stressed the hell out of the motors. Sure it just about worked. But for how long? My Sandmarc 18mm plus hybrid filters, plus iPhone 11 Pro weigh in at just under 500g. So FAR in excess of the OM3's safe payload. This is a real problem that a lot of filmmakers are going to face.

Works sweet and it is perfectly balanced! ! And it is from the few ones that can handle all the load with iPhone 12 pro max.

It won’t work with those cages. At least in our testing, the holder/cradle is not big enough to support that size. Weight no problem though.

Get a small arm (like a “magic arm” from Manfrotto) and connect it to the 1/4-20 base and then add a cold shoe. Or Ulanzi and others make small arm attachments that will connect and have cold shoes too.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience, I've bought it today and I'm going to test M2 by next week. I have a sony a5100 with 16mm pancake lens, so it should be no trouble for the weight, but I also want to use it for my xiaomi mi 9T, which has an incredible camera... and sometimes the quality of the mobile camera is enough... BTW I really like the detail of the footage taken with your iPhone XS Max, while I doubt the moment 18mm lens isn't improving it at all... is that a good idea, to add more glass over a camera lens?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
You’ll be fine with that and a pancake lens. That’s actually a good combination. As far as adding lenses… Yeah, the better ones especially work out pretty well. Moment, Sandmarc,, Sirui. All good options. They don’t “improve it“, but they also don’t degrade it. There’s no light loss either. And something like an anamorphic can add some interesting style or a fisheye.

Supposedly the Osmo Mobile 3 works with Moment lenses with no counterweights, but have heard conflicting reports. This one definitely can hold the weight easily, but balancing is tricky. At least at first. Hope it gets easier. Still testing.

I wouldnt recommend it for phones plus moment lenses. I bought it for my note 20 ultra and was able to balance it but it was just too much of a hassle. With the moment lense I was able to balance it but only with the camera closest to the gimbal motor.

would you recommend zhiyun smooth 4 over crane m2 for smartphone?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
If you’re only using a smartphone, then probably yes. The only caveat being the Smooth 4 has a very low payload capacity. It’s like 220g. So you really can’t use any lenses or accessories, especially if you have a plus size phone. With smaller phones you can but it will push the limits of the motors. With this one, once you get it balanced you can add all kinds of stuff.

The problem is the payload capacity and a counterweight obviously adds more weight. Again, mainly talking about larger phones. Smaller phones you can make it work with a lighter lens especially.

Definetely keeping and eye for the full review. I’m interested on getting this gimbal for my iPhone X and Moment lenses as well as my Lumix G7 with the 25mm f/1.7. I think that the G7 might be ok regarding weight, but it’s the size that worries me a little.

Ugh I have a iPhone XS Max + Moment lenses and I have tried almost every smartphone gimbal and none of them work without issues. Movi Cinema Robot is so annoying to use the counterweights to balance and they get in the way of your hand, Smooth 4 will suddenly crap out from too much weight on the motors, even with counterweights. Osmo can't handle it either. I was really hoping this would be the one because it can handle a higher payload. How is it possible that there's no good smartphone gimbal for a Max + Moment lenses?! It's beyond frustrating
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely hear you! But this one works pretty well once you get past the learning curve and get it balanced. It is tricky at first with top-heavy payloads.

I had many talks with Moment. they said that the following combinations doesn't work on Osmo Mobile 3 - iPhone 11 Pro Max - Moment Wide or Tele Lens - 62mm Filter Mount + Variable ND Filter - Osmo Mobile 3 They said that it's too heavy for the gimbal to handle this. But how about this Gimbal? Would Zhiyun Crane-M2 be able to handle this load?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 жыл бұрын
It can definitely hold the weight. No problem there at all. The issue might be balancing because anything top-heavy is tricky with this gimbal in our experience. Lower profile, compact cameras and some mirrorless cameras with shorter lenses it’s great. We’ve had trouble balancing smartphones with lenses just because of the height, but they have worked with some effort.
@moncho33
@moncho33 5 жыл бұрын
I just got the M2 a couple of days ago, so I haven't been able to test it properly. I have the iPhone X, it will hold it with the Moment anamorphic no problem, the wide might be a little bit troublesome but can be made to work. Have not tried the Tele yet. My variable ND is 77mm because is the one I use with my cameras as well. So when I add the Moment 62mm filter mount, a step down ring 77mm to 62mm and the 77mm filter, it will not balance at all. Since the camera on the iPhone is not in the center it will be too heavy on one side. But it will work wonderful with my Lumix G7 with the Panasonic 25mm and the Olympus 17mm with the 77mm filter and its step down ring.
