I grew up across the street from a Ziebart in the 1960's & 70's. My dad and family were friends with the owner. All our new cars got rustproofing done. Some cars were kept for many years and they developed rust, I saw the thick tar-like substance oozing out of the frame of the car. They always put a blue and yellow sticker on your car. Their product did nothing to stop the rust on our cars. One of our rusty cars had their sticker on it, the Z owner walked by and tore the sticker off. Do they finally have a product to stop the rust , these days?

It sounds like there are some oil film treatments that can be sprayed on. The oil is anti corrosive and doesn’t trap moisture. Some people seem to have had success with rustoleum, too. I ended up at this video looking into pros and cons of this stuff. The cons are harsh when you see the long term effects. the question seems to be whether or not the surface was prepped right, or if moisture and oxygen somehow seep through the coating. I’m still looking into that. I’ll have to see if this channel has an update.

I've been seriously looking into this process and it seems the 'Undercoating' is the wrong stuff to use in a 'salt belt state'. What seems to be the most effective is the oil or lanolin based 'rust proofing' that has to be reapplied every one to two years. Ziebart DOES offer this sort of rust proofing and it's a similar price per car to what other rust proofing services I've looked into such as Krown and Rust Check charge, which is currently $150.

Kat Slavik Awesome Awesome & thanks for watching! We definitely recommend visiting both companies & getting to know who will be spraying your truck. Ask the hard questions, research online reviews & get a feel for which company you feel most comfortable with. We had the opportunity to meet with the ZieBart crew that would be spraying our truck. We asked the hard questions and even asked if we could watch them do it and they were extremely professional courteous and willing to allow us to watch. We were impressed however we are also aware of the online reviews & not everyone had a great experience. We hope this helps! But they over sprayed onto your paint at the bottom of the doors? They didn't remove your tires so the inside of your rims get sprayed? Trying to decide now but I'm scared of turning it over to them... Maybe like you did but he just showed me where they have to drill four holes around the door and just can't let them do that on a new car.

Public Name Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment. Definitely a big decision to get this procedure done to your vehicle. We actually requested the spray to be added to the lower portion of our doors. As you know, Salt gatherers inside the lower portion of the doors...leading to rusted out holes...no good 😱. We read a lot of reviews & definitely are satisfied. However as you & I know, you want it to be right & not sloppy. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Keep us posted on what you do. I honestly don't know what alot of you are talking about. I agree with Jake as I was a rustproofing tech for 13 yrs. Living in west. P.A. where salt was almost raw your car would rot out in 3 yrs. if not protected. Ziebart had a very strict policy on 100% coverage and had reps that would show up at any given time. He would randomly pick a vehicle and check inside of doors,q-panels,trunk,and engine comp. Then put on the lift and walk in all 4 directions with a flood light. If you scored 96 or less,see ya later. This was back in the 70s and 80s. We had a micro-fish that showed every vehicle broken down by panels. Every year we asked you return for a check job to keep your warranty in tact. $20.00 for the underside power washing and free reapplication of chipped off areas from stones. Or you could power wash,then no charge. We used to do entire utility fleers from cars to bucket trucks,Penn Dot vehicles etc.... I own a rust free 09 Tacoma!!! I hope they continue their quality of above and beyond.

@Richcbuck The problem seems to be, that services like Ziebart only used to offer 'undercoating' and people thought that was a once and done process. This had been my understanding too. Of course such undercoatings fail quickly so Ziebart got a bad rep. Just recently I looked up the oil or lanolin based services such as Krown and Rust Check, with their yearly or bi-yearly followup treatments and discovered Ziebart offers that same treatment also. I don't know how long Ziebart has offered that alternative treatment?

I live in NE Ohio, I have an 01 f150 that I bought used but rust free out of Idaho. Bite the bullet and use fluid film. Works amazing, it’s more of an oil spray. Smells like a urinal cake for few days. I only say bite the bullet because you have to do it every year but it’s worth it. Buy the gun and go to town. Lay it on thick, in the frame, pull the plugs and do the rockers. Cake it in the stuff. It stays on there all winter even if it’s not noticeably there. It’ gets down in the pores of the metal and resist the urge to wash the underside during the winter because it’ll eventually wash off if done too much. 4 years and the trucks just as clean as when I bought it! These rubberized undercoatings trap salt a moisture and will rot it from the inside out.

We found this to be an asset to the vehicle as we drive through the cold, snowy, salty roads of the northern midwest. It’s been over a year since we had the coating application sprayed & we did the yearly “MX” spray for $49.00. This helps reseal abused areas where rocks & any other form of debris caused damage. NO ONE MENTIONED TO: Just look at how there's no rust on the top of the truck, why is that? Because it's painted right...? It's hard for rust to get under paint. AND paint can last for decades and decades! Is the bottom of our vehicles painted from the factory....Not really, certainly not like the tops of our vehicles, much is bare metal! SO that's what I do to my used vehicles I cherish when I first buy them(I don't buy new). I put on a respirator and drive the front or back 2 wheels up my portable handy ramps and lay on my back with a wire brush and some music and brush off any visible underside rust. Note there is often more rust in the front or rear of the vehicle including the inside of the bumpers are often unpainted from the factory. THEN I go to the self service car wash and hit the bottom of the vehicle clean. THEN a few days later after all dry, I use a clear waterproof caulking and lightly caulk around the 2 sheets of metal spot welded together fenders and below the doors edges, but making sure to avoid the shaped metal small drain holes. Because when you're driving in the winter slush, the salt water goes right in these open seam edges between the spot welds so close them but not the staggered small drain holes-keep open. Then get under the vehicle again and use clear scotch tape to apply over any few factory labels/tags you might see that you do not want paint to indefinitely cover so even if you spray it, the paint will fall off it over time. Then wearing a respirator and music and rattle spray cans of gloss(more durable) black rust oleum and spray any bare or poorly painted metal and repeat spraying about every 15 minutes until I get at least several coats on. But where underside rust was bad, first spray it with rust oleum's heavy rust convert-treatment spray can, following directions before painting on top of it. Now after a few days the caulk is dry, use a spray can with a straw and spray a thin dripping oil like film, wd40, or similar to spray up into the drain holes found at the bottom of the doors and spot welded 2 sheets of metal together-smaller holes found along the fender line and under the door line-vehicle body. It looks like factory perfection new and what the factory should have done and no thick tar crap that traps moisture accelerating rust which makes some mechanics refuse to work on your vehicle, all parts covered with a thick tar..... wt heck. Although you won't be able to spray paint 100% of all the metal because of the angles. So that's where spray oil comes into play if rust is a real problem in your area. But paint first and foremost where the factory didn't or very lightly/poorly did. So you may go through 5 spray cans, they are very affordable and you've made a huge difference to how long it'll last. If rust is really bad in your area, you may need to repeat the spraying like every year until you have things well treated and paint holding on solid in areas you might not have wire brushed enough. If rust is super bad in your area, you may then need to switch to yearly oiling everything down with whatever is the best diy locally used such as your used transmission fluid. Take care.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 2 жыл бұрын
Very well said and that’s awesome you do that. Not a single person can argue that your procedure won’t extend the life of the vehicle…because it most certainly will. Again, thanks for sharing this, hope you have a great weekend. 👍

@JimTMcDaniels1 FWIW, Ziebart offers both the undercoating AND the oil based spray that has to be reapplied yearly and is similar to what Krown and Rust Check uses. On the paint issue, it depends on how much road grit hits the underside of your vehicle. I learned the hard way that painting the underside deck of my lawn mower, is useless no matter what product is used, and I tried several, because the force of the grass etc just blasts it all off after a month or so.

A lot of people commenting on this video don't know what in the Hell they are talking about. The rubberized undercoating DOES WORK but you have to commit to maintaining it every year. Then of course some trucks frames are already too far gone, but they insist that the ziebart undercoating made it worse. I prefer fluid film on my Tacoma, but that is not to say Ziebart does not offer a good rust protection.
