Professional editor and director here. I would say that all of this depends so much on the direction given to the editor. Most of the times the direction is incorporated into how the piece is going to be edited, so it's unusal to see first edits based on just the material and music alone without any direction. I like these kinds of experiments because it's a look into the creative process of the first edit, the actual one editors can do on their own before directors, producers and clients have their say. I think most of these were well done, but I don't think the price difference is really a justified comparison. Price can also be about how experienced the editor is working with directors and producers. There are many people really creative who never worked in a collaborative manner and that's where the price usually shows itself. The ability to consistently input creative quality for each and every iteration of feedback from others. So even though some high paid editors might be considered less good in these edits, they might be well worth it in a collaborative space. Since there's so much else going on in commercial editing, with target audiences, visions, company identity markers etc. it's very hard to actually know the direction just based of music and material. So I would say, all of these creative editors did a fine job. It's hard to value between them due to the factors above. But it's interesting to see how things like this plays out. It's just important to remember that editing is collaborative and that follow-up feedback run-throughs are just as much a part of the process as these first edit results.

It’s still bad. Cheese coming OFF a pizza just didn‘t look appetizing. I would’ve glossed over it if I saw it on tv. Same! I don’t know if these people really don’t have a refined experience with pizza or what, but the most appetising appearance of the pizza is when it is in the oven; not when sad and flat looking ingredients are being scooped from metal Subway containers. Cheese melting and forming bubbles, the fire cracking, the ingredients changing colour from the heat... that’s what makes someone’s mouth water. Pizza in Italy is a refined experience every single time, and that’s what every pizza commercial should be aiming.

The difference between the $500 edit and the $25 one is that, although the most expensive one has the best transitions, it makes the viewer a bit sick because of all the reverse shots while the $25 edit lets you pay more attention to the product (which is the whole purpose of an add) and it even makes you HUNGRYwith those shots and, specially, those sound effects of the pizza being cooked. He really needs to rise his prize!

that's what revisions are for tho, I don't think any were made for the sake of this video's "judging" part. It seems a bit normal for freelancers to overdo "cool" or "eye catching" things so the client will either say "that's it, that's 500$ right there" or will say "yeah let's tone it just a notch." Well from my experience anyway, a lot of clients tend to not go for subtlety.
@renatus1234 жыл бұрын
I feel like a more telling challenge would be to ask these editors what they can do with footage that is NOT that good. That footage is very nice. It didn't take a lot to make it look that good, and it was all shot in a way that already begged for pretty specific ramps and fast cuts. But if you're an editor on here you know the real challenge is when a client gives you bizzare, disjointed crap, random frame rates and requests a bunch of text and cuts from terrible interviews, etc. A good editor can kill it with good OR bad footage.

WUT. The technical skill and creativity for the $500 video was worth that much, but it was confusing af as a pizza commercial. It's disorienting to see a product being unmade for almost a full 30 second commercial. It's fine as a fun creative flair for one shot, but confusing when the whole commercial is like that. Oh and the second VO was fucking fantastic.

Exactly what I was thinking. My jr.high science classes had an entire unit on bias and how to avoid it and no one ever seems to consider that.

Bruh that $500 take was fresh af boi, it gave me the illusion of feeling and smelling how fresh the produce looked and being put together quickly to be cooked then served is the big idea of a fast food like pizza.

Insulting to professional editors and basically a 10 minute ad like Seto says. He's lucky he found an editor who undersells themselves.
