Zondervan Rant 2: Fonts for NRSVue, NRSV, and the NIV 2011

I have the NRSVue in 10 point font. Initially I thought I would hate the comfort print but it's definitely grown on me. Its dark and quite pleasant to read actually. Translation-wise I still have a lot of love for the NRSV but the UE has quickly become my favorite. I think its a worthy update. Thanks for the review.

I have recently taken to reading a lot more on my tablet. I can make the letters as big as I need and there's no ghosting!

I thought I was the only one with complaints about the type size of NRSVue and other translations. The NRSVue I bought was okay, but after 30 minutes of reading I get a headache - and I wear prescription glasses. My solution to that has been reading the NRSVue on Kindle. The reading is easier as I can bump up the size of the font, although it's hard for me to navigate the Kindle edition. I've run across several Bibles where the paper is so thin the text on the opposite side bleeds through to the side. I haven't had that problem with the version of the ue I purchased last month. I like that I can get the deuterocanonical/apocryphal books including both Catholic, Orthodox, and even Coptic canons. Have you had a chance to critique the "Word on Fire" Bible? It is an interesting setup utilizing the NRSV. It may not be popular among Protestants, but I like the reference to church Fathers and other commentaries. It has the same problems with text. I will give them credit with the line spacing, but the supplemental material is in a sanserif text which is really hard to read. Unlike the NRSVue, the edition is not available on Kindle. I love your "nuts and bolts" critique of these various versions of the Bible. Finally, there is someone speaking out for the weak of eyesight like myself. 😵‍💫

That font is way too small! I can't see many people using something like that for long. It's good to see though that the NRSVue font is an improvement over that incredibly strange one they came up with for the NRSV. Though I did manage to read the entire NT in that font a few years ago! My NRSV Cultural Backgrounds Bible has it.

Yeah those fonts ain't no fun! You should review that cultural background Bible though. Even if you did already, have a "part II"

Yeah, gift Bibles are really bad now, especially Zondervan. I always point people to the value thinlines, but Zondervan only makes them in the NIV. Alternatively, the paperbacks can have decent print, and I'd go for a large print paperback. I think Zondervan's trying to double-dip: people buy a gift Bible for a new believer, and then they have to buy an actual Bible later so they can read it.

How awful. That gift/award Bible seems more like a prop or party favor created to be given out, but never actually used.
