I’m so happy you listened to the OVA and I do hope you have the chance to watch it soon and get your reaction and thoughts. The film is only and hour long and in Japan it was released as 2 parts but merge them together for those overseas Edit: there’s not much info about the song so you know as much as we do at the moment. Although I believe the song was translated from Japanese to English same way they did to open your heart from crush 40 and can be interpreted to either the point of view of sonic or metal sonic

The lyrics in fact have a deeper meaning connected to the OVA itself, it's talking about Sonic and Metal Sonic and how both of them, although being different, are really simillar, Metal Sonic is a robot created by Dr. Eggman as his ultimate weapon, a perfect metallic copy of Sonic himself, in the games, Metal Sonic is an "upgraded Sonic", a robot made to surpass Sonic in every aspect, especially on his speed, while he is not faster than Sonic normally, he can use a hyperdrive attack that makes him boost in speeds that surpasses Sonic, but that danifies his engines for some time so he has to slow down conciderably in the OVA on the other hand, although he shows to be stronger on their first battle, on the second battle both Sonic and Metal seem on par with one another, both of them do the exact same move from each other and Sonic even says an line that became iconic in the Sonic community "You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you since I know everything you're going to do, strange, isn't it?", talking about how both of them are exactly equal But even though the lyrics are related to the OVA itself, one of the biggest complains everyone makes about this song (even though it is a banger and everyone loves it lol) it's the lyrics, people usually say they're cheesy or the comparisions they made don't make any sense, like comparing air to oxygen or steak to cow, it's really weird and redundant, people say the lyrics are like this probably because the composer probably didn't knew english super well, but idk about that For me, I also agree on this fact that the comparisions are weird, I think we could have more meaningful comparisions such as "Stars and Black Holes", "Carbon and Oxygen", and other things like that, those are things that when you look superficially they look like oposites, like Sonic and Metal Sonic, since one is a villain and the other one is a hero, and they look different enough but when you analyse closely they have a lot of similliarities, both Stars and Black Holes are born the same way, Carbon is how plants breath in and Oxygen is how they breath out, Oxygen is how humans breath in and Carbon is how humans breath out, same applies to them, lots of details in Metal Sonic's design resambles Sonic, and Metal Sonic even has a redemption arc at the end of the OVA

The sonic OVA is such an iconic and important piece of sonic history! i think the soundtrack for it really represents that feeling the original classic games had (before they transitioned to more of a rock vibe) and im glad it gets more popular everyday as more people start to appreciate the OVA! This song is about metal sonic, a robot copy of sonic. In the ova, he and Sonic are sorta linked and they move and to an extent even act similarly, so even through they’re opposites, with one being an organic, snarky and heroic hedgehog and the other his evil, emotionless metal copy, they still are kind of the same, they still are “look-a-likes”.

The Japanesse lyrics are almost directly translated into English, which results in these strange word usage. I've heard "riding my bike" was translated from a Japanesse idiom that is "riding free" if put directly into English. But the closer phrase English would use is "while I was on a stroll/jog." I think there is a video with more accurate translations but loses the flow of the song.

I recommend checking out the "Project Shadow" shortfilm by João Filipe Santiago. It is a great fan project set in the Sonic movie universe. I think you would enjoy it. Also you don't need to watch the previous sonic movies to understand what is going on, but it was made as setup for the third sonic movie. I really like the point of these lyrics, we get all sorts of unusual connections, with the parts of the songs talking about names, we learn those names as kids, and someone a long time ago decided those names. Really though those are definitions we make, its kinda like we divide ideas, but we all come from one place. That's at least my take, that its a song about how arbitrary division can be and how it can be redefined.

I think the lyrics are trying to represent how Iook alike they are but they’re so different like steak and cow, ice and water. Like Sonic and Metal Sonic they’re both the act the same but different. Sonic is more rebellious and represents freedom but Metal Sonic he’s more obedient and Imprisonment. Organic Vs. Machine.

I haven't watched the OVA all the way though yet, but I'd still recommend giving it a skim, if nothing else, just to get a feeling for what people in the 90's thought a "Sonic Movie" was. Now for my song request! The Sonic Rush soundtrack is one I've only heard good things about, but it also doesn't really get talked about often, probably since it's a DS spin-off from the mid-2000's when Sonic have alot of *other* stuff going on (Sonic '06 anyone?) That being said, I personally really like Sonic Rush's OST, especially when it isn't being played on a very laggy and totally legal emulator.
