This is a very thought provoking video. Looking back over the decades.... In the 70's and early 80's it was all about the lockbacks. Buck 110/112 and similar. Then at some point I discovered Cold Steel's San Mai folder. I literally wore that knife out. In the 90's I was in love with Spyderco. I went through 2 or 3 of the original plastic clipped Enduras and Delicas. I carried a fully serrated Police for years. In the 2000's I was into Benchmade. The Axis lock really tripped my trigger. About 4 or 5 years ago I found Twosun and Kizer. Such cool designs and high end materials for low end prices. I couldn't get enough ( went a little nuts ) 🤪. Most recently though, my tastes are leaning back towards Spyderco. The Lynch NW and MXG gear clips make all the difference in the world for me. My S45VN PM2 with the Lynch clip has been getting more than it's share of pocket time.

I was into fast opening knives when I first got into knives. Assisted to start then flippers on bearings. Now I really appreciate glassy action on pb washers. I've always hated thick stock and bad geometry. ZT really fell off. 5-10 years ago they'd have really interesting collabs with different makers, now it seems like they're not even trying

Hi Jared!! Thanks for the vid. Great way to share and provoke others to think about this topic. As we go thru life experiences, I guess that we all change and evolve in our preferences. In many things, not only knifes, but on this subject I think you hit the nail in the head when you say "knives need to make sense". The challenge to designers in my humble opinion is finding attractive & inspiring looks which accomplish the end mission of the tool. Ex. Kershaw Atmos (Sinkevich) vs Kershaw Fraxtion (Jans Anso). Both budget pieces, with their limitations due to materials and the workmenship that can be paid at this price level, but the better "tool" in my opinion (the Fraxtion) was the one that got discontinued in favor of the better "looks" tool (the Atmos). Don't get me wrong the Atmos is a good light duty budget EDC, but I think the Fraxtion made better "sense" for the intended use. So as always the "business" side of things also counts; what are markets demanding? Most manufacturers will follow the market, so its also up to us as consumers to learn, and improve in order to ensure we have great cutting tools available. That's why I like your vid. Sorry, long comment. Keep up the good work!

I like the 0452/0450, love the 0470. Definitely gonna pick up a Hinderer design too. Probably the best knife they make. I kinda dig that new 0707 they have, interesting so you can have a frame lock and not worry about lockbar pressure. Also love the 0640.

Another great vid...Thanks Jerad!! I have an awesome ZT, 0452 ti... just one, but I seriously love that thing for hard use (though I haven't used it much). I loved Buck and Cold Steel fixed blades...then went through a Benchmade phase...Now I like to carry matching knives...I like to carry one full size 3 to almost 4 inch in one pocket and a small concealed secondary carry knife...not necessarily the same brand, but some common features to justify carrying as a pair.

I started out with knives I could use for opening boxes at work that wouldn't be too scary or intimidating. Like the og Pilar, Dragonfly 2, or just a Swiss Army Knife. Now most of my knives are full size working knives, top 5 being my CRK Sebenza 31, XM-18 3.5 Slicer, Gayle Bradley 2, Cold Steel Recon 1, GEC 43. I still have that Pilar, that I added PB washers onto. Right now brass is really attractive to me. I want to get a pen in brass, and a knife with brass scales.

My style hasn't so much changed as adapted new ways, I still enjoy thick overbuilt knives for woodworking and such, but I find myself wanting to carry a slicer as well now for gliding through materials. Now I carry more than your average person usually 3 knives along with a large and 2 small multi-tools. The right tool for every occasion so to speak. But I agree on styles changing just look at how popular front flippers are now for example. Never know what's going to be the next new fad/ improvement is going to be. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

I also like current designs from Ferum Forged like the WE Malice, Urban EDC F5.5, and the EMPEDC Nymble, all having a great finger choil to choke up into. I'm also into full-sized knives that fit my XL+ hands. The Petrified Fish Beluga, Spyderco Manix XL, and Cold Steel Recon 1 are a couple of my current favorites.

I have three 452's - the original CF version, the TI version and the blacked-out GL version. I recently bought the 393GLCF. I may pick up a 0308. Not really impressed with their 2021 release. I recently sent KAI customer service an email stating just that. Told them that based on What I'm seeing their best days are behind them. Suggested they start a series of sprint runs of their'greatest hit and to work with retail partners as to which ones. Yeah... Civivi, Kizer CRB, Artisan, Bestech make some 'OK to good' knives but I've already bought the ones that interest me. Kind of tired of Chinese knives and looking for ZT priced US product now. Would love to see more Hinderer designed ZT's like the 392... Yeah, I remember the spine wacker issue. It was wasn't just ZT. I have a few brands who's knives did that to one extent or another. IMO it was a perception issue that impacted user's perceived 'capability' of their knives. I've never had a knife fail that way and wonder what kind prying or other usage one would have to be engaged in to cause that type of failure. Quite likely those activities require a fixed blade, dedicated pryng tool or a true heavy-use folder. Nevertheless it hurt the 'perception' of some users.

This is a hard one for me to answer. I would say mostly my beginning purchases were cheaper knives that were 100 and less and now I’m way more into 300 to 800 dollar knives. That’s due to know about how I use my knives and need a knife that won’t have issues in 6 months such as lock rock, or lock up going past 60-70 percent in 6 months, and just being around the block I can just look at a knife and know how to avoid those issues. But size wise I’m still in that same size range.

Like all tools knives are different. The surgeon will need a skinny tiny shard of glass on the eye surgery and a bone saw in the orthopedics. The trickier part is the all rounder. The reasons Swiss army knife was so popular years ago. The saw in my 40 year old knife was priceless in the bush when hunting. Just a blade and saw combined was the all rounder. But boy oh boy has steel improved. I am just transitioning to diamonds for sharpening and yet still cherish the translucent arkansas.

Those sinkovinch designs don’t appeal to me at all. The upswept blade is good for skinning maybe filleting but how often does that happen? The-0456 was way overpriced, very satisfying clunk on deployment

Back then I didn't like the really upset blades the slightly upset ones I did but the reality was they were not very good at edc

Doesn't cut well?? Because "it doesn't push well..."? Ummm...you're not supposed to "push" with a curved blade. Tehy are designed for "slashing" motions. If you want to "push cut" get a kife with a Wharncliffe edge/blade. The same holds true for kitchen knives....the user of the kife needs to know their "cutting style"....are you into "push cuts" / Flat cutting edge....if you repfer a "rocking motion/slashing" then a curved blade with a belly....
