Having ZUTOMAYO as an introduction to J-Pop is quite possibly the best way to be introduced to J-Pop. ZUTOMAYO is a whole lot different than other bands, and is more near J-Rock than J-Pop.

Zutomayo's live shows are really interesting to watch, with a lot of production and huge stages. I am generally not a huge fan of the more pop style of music, but I really have started to enjoy Zutomayo and Yuroshika (thanks again Dragonphly for both) mainly because their use of "real" instruments especially the bass and just their live shows (as far as Zutomayo goes). I believe the vocalist (ACAね) is also the writer of most of the music together with a producer. A lot of the instrumentalists are different over the releases, but you can clearly see live that they know what they are doing. The reason why the videos for Zutomayo are animated is because ACAね doesn't show her face and is basically an anonymous artist. There are plenty of them nowadays in Japan in the J-Pop world, a couple of other ones that I know about are Yuroshika (at least the vocalist, maybe both) and Ado, but I'm sure there are plenty more. I think the main reason is because they generally start pretty young and want to keep some privacy + it can otherwise be difficult to find work if music doesn't pan out. It's also fun to see the tricks use find to let them perform live on stage while keeping their anonymity.

Bit late, but I wanna share some commnents: The anonymity is interesting. It's the "never meet your heroes" transplanted into a culture. By staying anonymous, you know people love you for your talent. And that's all it's about, isn't it? Why call yourself an artist if the art you express doesn't get you there but your face? Also it creates jobs for animators. You know Japan, they've got loads of animators. Right, also the video part. This band's MVs are crazy. Each tell a different short story, though more often than once is not very relevant to the lyrics. Still, the animation rocks. Also, each video has cameos from previous ones. Especially this one, where the girl kill all other girls' stories by deviating them from the right course at the climatic moment. Nice idea. Without a story, a character loses identity and so cease to be.
