I drove my stepfather's AP1 out on highway 94 SoCal a few times. In the same time period I was having the time of my life behind the wheel of my buddy's E36 M3 on the track (Sears Point then, now Sonoma Raceway). I have to be honest, although the S52 had an ass load more torque, the S2K's hyperactive F20C and unreal tight and nimble chassis shocked the hell out of me. I'd never experienced how 300lbs and low center of gravity could make such a huge difference. We all know Fenton's passion for the AP1, so for him to actually acknwledge the performance of the '23 Type R as superior is really saying something.

As an s2k owner, it’s still king. But I also haven’t owned or driven an NSX. If you could have the s2k as your weekend car, and ctr daily… that’s my 2023 goal lol.
@TheChannel19782 жыл бұрын
I think the nsx would drive more neutral compared to an AP1 thanks to its longer wheel base. I think the gear ratios are too long to make it an exciting drive like in an S2k. Everything about the s2k maximises excitement like in no other car I can think of [unless you have money to buy a gt3, 458 or perhaps a Lotus]
@j.38542 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of seat time in a 2000 Modified NSX 6MT. and a little in a few S2000’s. The NSX is an animal compared to a S2000. Even in stock form, when on throttle hard, the entire front end lifts off the ground and you can really feel it. Our car had 200lbs weight reduction and maybe 10-20 hp worth of breathing mods. Made a big difference, as even the NSX’s V6 is fairly low torque.

I love how easy the FL5 is to rotate mid-corner with some lift-off oversteer. It rotates like no other front wheel drive car I've ever driven. That makes it feel so much more nimble and playful...They really got it right on the overall design and tuning with this one.
@vtecharrys.6981 Жыл бұрын
Have you driven an Integra Type-R? It does the same. I still see old ITR's beating new CTR's (times) in auto-x. Imagine a 2600 pound car with good adjustable shocks cornering vs. the 3200lb CTR. Same with the 2800lb S2K. With shocks or a spring/shock combo the S2000 is the best handling car out there - it's really insane how well they corner, and the steering ratio and responsiveness is so amazingly quick in the S2K. I will take a 2600-2800lb car for the fun factor any day over a 3200lb car, and with some good aftermarket brake pads both ITR and S2K will stop on a dime. Weight still plays a big role in the nimble/playful/fun-factor dynamics, and don't forget those cars do not have electric steering giving a lot more road feel which = "fun to drive".
@BigBear-- Жыл бұрын
@@vtecharrys.6981 I was talking about more modern cars. I don't deny those older cars are fun as hell to drive, however you're comparing modified cars to stock cars. In stock form those cars don't really hold a candle to a new FL5 in actual performance. As for modifying...that can be done to all platforms...I'd argue that a modified FL5 will still beat a modified Integra. There's just too much difference in actual chassis development, as far as raw performance. You could I guess come up with some super specific test that an old Integra would beat an FL5 just cause it's lighter...maybe...but that would have be some very specific scenario, and I'd have a hard time coming up with one. The S2000 is a bit if a different beast all together. Its a small 2 seater rear wheel drive coupe. Again, unmodified still doesn't come anywhere close, but it has more potential in modified form.
@DudeThedudesky2 ай бұрын
@BigBear-- the modified type r still is probably better. Check out the type r tcr or type r spoon racing. But you could still make it possibly better you would need wide wheels loads of downforce about 400 500 hp with a supercharger or fast spooling turbo. Both cars are amazing.
@BigBear--2 ай бұрын
@@DudeThedudesky ~400 is pretty easy even with a stock turbo. 500 will require a turbo upgrade. You can go real big on the K-series if you want to...though anything above 500-550, will start to require increasing amounts of block/head work. If you want to though 1000+ is very doable. Though at that point it becomes increasingly hard to comfortably daily the thing.
@DudeThedudesky2 ай бұрын
@BigBear-- I meant for the s2000 that 400 500 hp would be perfect with a supercharger. Of course you would need alot wider wheels front and rear downforce and good tires I'd also install a beefy roll cage.

As you will probably know, in the UK we got the AP1 S2000 with the rash of modifications that the AP2 got, but still maintaining the 9000 rpm red line. My color choice to get would be darker hue, black color masks the black rear wing nicely as well as the gaudy front overhang. Currently #1 spot at 2.5k ADM for CTR and #4 soot for GR Corolla at msrp. Let’s see where it takes me but CTR would be the choice even with ADM

I live in Europe, there all the S2000's have the 2 liter engine unless it is a import out of Europe. I own my 2002 S2K since 2010, bought with about 80k kilometers on it, now it almost has 190000kms and i'am still in love with that car. I must say, i like it such a long time because it is NOT my daily. I drive it in my free time when the wether is good in spring and summer. I drove it on Spa Francorchamps, the Nürburgring, in the Alpes, German Highway and a lot on twisty roads in the Eifel hills. Those are the places where you have fun with car. Traffic jam and with the top up in the rain in busy cities and going to the supermarket is not the place wherefore Honda built the S2K. Nowadays cars with lowtorque turbo engines are faster and must more easier to drive fast, but that don't cares me, they all miss the driving feeling of a S2K. And why not compare a S2K with a new car?........Maybe comparing the S2K with the FL5 is not the right one, RWD compared to FWD but S2K comparing with GR86? For example, here in Holland the GR86 costs 65K Euros because of the very high CO2 taxes, for half the price you can buy a nice used S2K .

FK8 has an amazing chassis and is just so compliant leven in R mode, awesome brakes and amazing turn in and steering feel. I just wish the engine was less laggy and had better acceleration grip. I actually wanted to buy a FL5 but only 9 is coming to my country, so I ordered a RS3 instead, we will see how it compares to my previous cars. I had EP3 (I loved it! K20 n/a, it was a masterpiece), since 2 years I own FK8. It's a great car, very versatile and fast, but it's probably my last modern Honda. I'm a bit bored already with FWD hothatches. I came to the conclusion that this car is too versatile. One car can't be the best at everything, best on track, best on long journeys etc. The effect is that FK8 is "average" in everything. Average on the track (fast but not as fun as RWD), average on the road on long jurneys (noisy inside, poor sound system). I came to the conclusion that I need two cars, funcar/trackcar and the second, comfortable family car. In 2023 I will probably sell FK8, and I hope to get SUV + car trailer + proper track car (MX5, S2000, Cayman, M2, or maybe Clio 3/4 CUP (factory car by RENAULT SPORT with sadev sequential gearbox... s2000 is the drivers raw naturally aspirated car with rwd. The Fwd civic type R is quicker and faster with all the tech but lacks the sleekness/naturally aspirated raw sound Honda is known for. I hate the fake engine noise in the civic type R. I love civics but fake engine noise.... really...?
@TheChannel19782 жыл бұрын
I hate that about it too. Type-R means emotion. I can't believe all the marketing BS when they serve up an engine that is competent but sounds crap. They've basically sacrificed their heritage of high-revving engines to become an engine maker that is competent without emotion. Just great.

I would take an S2000 AP2 all day! Preferably with a hard top. So much cooler car and still looks better than these new cars

I believe the supra would be a better choice for those backroads and it's also rearruled drive the suspension is not as harsh as the type bar where it only excels in a perfectly flat track unlike the supra that can also be good on the flat track does really good on back roads So if you really think that that was the fastest you can go on that back road with the type bar I can't wait to see your reaction when you drive the super GR in that same back road.

Just for the record the fk8 pulls away from the new R as far as acceleration goes. The gearing slowed it down.

Yup. I imagine the longer gearing might make it quicker at some tracks

No offense but comparing FWD to RWD doesn't really work that well as the platform is so different. My take away was the new Civic Type-R is super capable but the comparison added nothign to it other than the s2k is a more engaging drive, which I knew before. I would have preferred a comparison to another FWD car, perhaps a DC2 Integra Type-R, which was meant to be the best handling FWD car at some point.
@1HeatWalk2 жыл бұрын
Cons of FWD is the acceleration, breaking, and turning overloads grip easier in the front. Pro is it saves weight not having a rod to drive a differential in the rear.
@pcarobsessed9778 Жыл бұрын
Type r is going over 60k with mark up. You pay 60k for a civic. Gotta be fucking insane paying 60k for a civic
