Dewarding Tips Most People Aren’t Using

In this video we go over some tips and tricks for dewarding the enemies. Some tips include using the enemy's Magic Stick against them and checking cliffs with only your hero.

As a 15k hour immortal support I agree with all the tips. Here's some more I could think of: - always deward observer first. always - when dewarding in a dangerous zone think of reatreating fast, very often they will wona go for you. It's often more benefitial to even leave out the enemy sentry and retreat - if you gona ward+deward and it's not a mid-fight, always put sentry first, deward, and only then put your obs (after they lost vision of you). This is so obvious but still a common mistake even on 6k+ - all supports have their warding 'patterns'. During the game you will learn how enemy support puts their sentries by finding them. Most of the time this is their common 'dewarding pattern'. You can expect repeated sentries on the same spots in the future. You can put your own obs out of range of enemy's dewarding habits. Same can be applied to enemy observer wards as well - there is a couple of 'tower range' dewarding tricks that author haven't shown. They are pretty common, but still would have been a good addition to the video

As a 9k hour divine (ish) support I agreee with all the tips (and the ones mentioned by my higher ranked pre commentator). Here's some more I could think of: - When you move around the map pay attention to the lanes, how they shift, e.g. mid suddenly falls back one you reach the rune spot and appears immediately after you head back to your lane. (might only apply to stronger players; might also be due to misses so you gotta be attentive with this) - It can be beneficial to not deward, e.g. you have a sentry + obs on a cliff and then the enemy wards in the same exact place. You can use your opponents half knowledge to your advantage by setting up traps, e.g. sending mid there to farm + 3 heroes smoked. (I only got this once, but my team set up a rosh bait, where we entered under vision and jumped out at the other side. Waited for the enemies and wiped them) - In regards to abusing sentry patterns: I like to sometimes leave the sentry up, and place my obs just outside of the sentry vision. Please do treat this "style-copied" comment as a compliment to yours @AcediaUA. I did like it a lot. :)

Agreed with the 2nd tip fully but the first one has some exceptions. Like if the enemy support is dewarding at the same time then dewarding their sentry first will prevent them from hitting your sentry. It's a decision you need to make based on range, attack speed and how safe you are.

One more thing to add as a 5k hours divine support, if you dewarding a sentry, try to hit one, then go back, then hit it again. Don't do it continously or they will have vision of you for the full duration of when you starting to hit the ward

I always try to take out the obs 1st when there’s an observer and a sentry… but I can only do that when the ward and sentry are not on top of each other. How can I accomplish this if they’re on the same spot? In that situation sometimes I do hit the sentry instead by mistake but since they’re on the same spot how can I select the obs to attack it first?

1 more dewarding tip / scouting tip: When you are locked in your base and desperate for vision send your courier ahead of you first. If the enemy are there they will kill it and then you only lost a courier and not your life.

Also works with the trusty shovel kobold. It might not be as likely to get killed by the enemy if they know what you're trying to do; but it provides a larger circle of vision than the courier, so you can kind of scout the area with it.

One more trick that I see most immortal supports using is to walk into the range of an enemy tower but behind a tree, so that the tower wouldn't have vision of you by itself. If the tower still hits you, it means there is an observer ward providing vision of you. Either that or there is an invis nyx next to you and you're gonna die in the next 0.001 second. So consider using this trick only when you're likely to be safe.

It’s not line of sight vision only, they use it mid to see if the tower can spot them in tower range at all. The attack range is longer than vision range granted by towers (at night time) by anout 50-100 yards, so you can enter the attack range and if it does hit you you know they have a ward nearby. By entering the attack range from the opposite side you can deduce which side the ward is on (if it hits you above the lane but not below, the ward is top rune, if both it’s middle and a mid deward should hit it etc)

If you're using smoke it might be a nice idea to not even kill observers while smoke-ganking. Specially if there is a sentry nearby. Since that place feels safe for the enemy, potentially making the gank more sucessful

I also like watching the enemy's inventary for empty spots. If the dazzle has tango, clarity, nothing and two branches, one item probably dissapeared from his inventary, it could be a ward. I like leaving empty spaces in mine to confuse the other team.

I don't know what is the impact, but sometimes at early game I drop (not place) wards somewhere safe in the trees, let enemy check my inventory (early game on lane everybody is cheching regen, stick etc.) and after few seconds i dissapear in the fog get the wards and place them :). Not sure about the impact, but I like to do it. :)

be careful with the stairs vision trick, obviously on midlane the enemy hero also gives vision to the creeps, so dont get hit up stairs by creeps once and frantically deward the lane until you find the phantom observer

- Deny your observer if the enemy wants to get the last hit - walk closely around a cliff/tower which has a friendly sentry to check for Wards. Walking closely will give you small portions of high ground vision and reveal wards.

Shift-click is better, but it still can be spotted. It makes a little glitch with placing. But that's even better when you know about it, coz you can fake it. Just press "stop" during movement under enemy's vision, and if he's not checking your inventory before and after (like when fight is about to happend, or early game ganking/outnumbering), you can fake placing the ward, so wasting their sentry on wrong spot.

a trick to avoid the standing still and looking like you're warding issue is to press shift and right click to the area you plan on going after using the ward. Holding shift while giving a command will queue that command and will instantly occur once the previous command is finish. This is useful not only for warding but using Tangos and grabbing runes as well. Anytime you want to do something and maintain the walking momentum of your character you can use a Shift command

In lanning phase, when you wanne pull the creeps and the enemy support is already making a move to your derection. It mostly also indicate they have vision on you. Also look at attacks, you cant attack someone in trees without having hg vision on them. Every pos 4 gets a ward for in lane, as pos 5 you just need to find it for free gold.

I wanted to share an idea that you can effectively farm enemy jungle and leave the least value neutral to block the camp. Making the camps blocked even without wards. It is the opposite of stacking

There’s one you missed. The trick that Nisha used during Riyadh Masters to check if the mid lane dire side cliff was warded. He stood at the edge of the tower range where it should have fog of war active. The tower will attack you if the cliff on their triangle is warded. Same in Bottom lane Radiant cliff

a tip i take advantage of is: if you know where *some* enemies are but not all of them, or you have confidence you can sneak in, use a smoke of deceit on yourself to go deep and ward / deward. if your smoke breaks on the way there, you can a warning in advance. often this means i get away. you can even use this if you are trapped in base but know the enemy has a ward just outside. if you use a smoke you may be able to get the deward and then escape before they have time to react and rotate back to kill you. you will have to judge yourself if this is worth it. usually it's just a greedy thing to do but it often works in my games. sometimes if an enemy has a money hungry lineup, you can smoke in to block some of their jungle camps. this value of this has been greatly diminished since they made the map bigger tho. smokes are a limited resource however and you need to judge if a ward / deward is worth it. it's fairly situational but extremely useful.

Building on top of that - when I have a blink dagger on a ranged support and I am desperate for vision in an area, I smoke in, drop the sentry, hit once (which breaks the smoke) and then blink out when the second attack projectile is in the air. Helps a lot against global heroes like spectre who can instantly punish you for every deward, as it gives them very little time to react.

I don't play at high mmr so I don't know how really effective this is but, warding tip: Shift-click movement at the exact spot you warded. After that, try to have "normal" movements. In case they see you at the moment you warded, you will look less suspicious and the enemy support will be less prone to place sentries.

It's more intended for situations where you are not under s ward but directly within sight of an enemy; such as laning phase or as when you know you're being stalked by an invis hero. Sure, they can check your inventory but they'll be less likely to do so, and by the time they'll notice they'll be wracking their brain trying to remember when you moved to a warding spot. Conversely, a fun trick of mine is to blatantly beeline to a warding spot, stop and "stare" at it for a second, then leave in another direction at a sharp angle. There's good chances that the enemy support who saw you will go waste a sentry at that spot.

Skywrath mage's Concussive shot is another skill that requires vision to find a target. Also, when warding, only use cliff wards when you plan to fight in the immediate area. Learn spots that are useful and outside a sentry placed on top of a cliff. If your ward does give only a slice of vision, but covers movement deep in enemy territory, you still gain the information you need. Another tip, if you play against farm heavy core, block camps with wards and place them far away from each other, so the enemy supports have to buy a ward for each camp they want to free up for their core.

For me the best warding mind play is when placing obses in direct vision of enemy. Whenever you place a ward near creeps, or close to tower vision, or even an enemy hero. Even when shift-clicking movement while placing ward there is a little "sidestep"/glitch everybody can see, and I like to fake it and place the ward on like 2nd or 3rd sidestep, and it works like a charm and wastes quite a lot of enemies dewarding sentries.

0:38 I believe neutrals are programmed to use certain abilities more frequently (like the Wildwing Ripper's Hurricane and the Centaur's War Stomp) when 2 heroes from opposite teams are nearby. I got a tip that was missed out. Take illusion rune or tell your dps that has a manta to use illusions to scout ahead. Good when all are missing and you want to know where enemies are, but also for the support to check how they behave around the illusion, you can check the radar even when fake flanking someone with it if he backs off in the lane. You know they had vision somewhere near. You could even fake gank by micromanaging the movement to make it more like a real hero, instead of just a idle illusion. Therefor taking away some farm, because he feels threatened by someone in the bushes. Trick is not to show more copies of this illusion hero.

Walking around the cliff to detect the ward while the sentry is on the ground is actually a lot easier to do. Most cliffs (besides a few exceptions) are circular. This means that the ward can only be in one of four quadrants in the circle, and it cannot be in the centre. This means you can just shift queue all four quadrants of the cliff (the centre is the middle of the eye symbol) and you can very easily detect the ward, because your hero moves in the simplest path. This is a bit harder when your sentry is already on the cliff because your cursor snaps to the sentry instead of the quadrant you want to shift queue

1 thing pretty common in low mmr is that support tends to place obs and sentry right on top of each other on common places like cliffs, so close that when you attack to de-ward the obs you can misclick the sentry, gives times to enemies to react and possibly kill you. So, always attack the obs first (yellow one, without the blue eye on top)

One more time for knowing if any area is warded is while playing Slark, Slarks Innate Barracuda gives him a boost of regen and agility as long as he's invisible, the moment there's a ward anywhere closeby the innate stops and you will notice you are visibly slower while moving around.. be a team player and get a blue ward and deward it yourself rather than wait for a support to do it. You even get the gold back once you deward.

In enemy's territory, if you placed a sentry n found their sentry, you can place an obs ward right outside their sentry range(right on the outer circle) then deward your own sentry. But to do that you gotta make sure by common sense that they have no ward in that area. Works nicely on sideways of the map.

If you’re doing a hero challenge for dewarding, denying your own wards counts. Do this if your team is clearly gonna win and you have an abundance of wards. If you and your teammate accidentally both ward the same spot, just deny the one you placed. Always have your double ward stack so that you can put a sentry first. It’s much more common that you would panic and hastily drop a sentry than the other way around

Smoke is not popped by observer wards. Smoking for warding is a nice thing to do, pretty advanced. But it's not super benefiticial to smoke for dewarding, since you'll have to break smoke in order to attack wards
