Ben weider Joe weider was in control of everything they invested thousands of dollars in Arnold Schwarzenegger that's why he came out of retirement to win his 7th Mr Olympia because they had exercise equipments fitness supplements 10,000 / 1000 of dollars invested in Arnold Schwarzenegger so they had him win the 1980 Mr Olympia so their products would sell p it was all about money because in the 1980 Mr Olympia Arnold did not look at his best his legs were very weak he looked okay but not his best actually Mike mentzer looked a lot better so they did not score the 1980 Mr Olympia fairly it was in favor of Arnold Schwarzenegger due to Joe weider who invested a lot of money and products and if Arnold won the products would sell

I saw Dave Jones at World Gym in Santa Monica in the early 1980s and I was absolutely shocked at how thick his chest and back were. If you put one hand on his chest and one hand on his back and measured the distance between the two it would be 2 ft. He was the thickest guy training down there in Venice Santa Monica at that time.

Pretty sure Mentzer was pregnant, thats the only way you get a gut like that in the 70`s

I was there my Dad took me I was 16 years old. On the plane when we flew to Columbus Mike Mentzer and Ray and Dave Draper were on the plane. Mentzer got up and walked down the aisle of the plane the flight attendant approached Mike and she started coughing lol it was the weirdest thing she knelt down coughing and Mike held his hand out and helped her up. I had a muscle and fitness magazine with me and it was weider on the cover using Robby's body. There was Serge Nubret I handed him the magazine and he surprising he signed it, I have a lot of signatures with the brochure Bill Pearl is one Ed Corney was charging for his autograph. I thought Dave Draper guessed posed also I could be wrong. I did take some pictures of Robby and Zane and Mentzer there. I was along time ago but I do remember that when Robby walked out and turned to the audience there were gasps. I thank my Dad for taking me, he is not here anymore and I miss him very much! My true Hero!

It may be largely forgotten now, but Robinson was the clear favorite in the late 70s and consistently got his conditioning wrong in big shows. I saw him in shape at the 76 universe in Montreal, and his density was insane, far above most bodybuilders not named Columbu or Yates.

Mike was just on another level overall. Top to bottom Mike was the winner 🏆

This is an excellent, accurate and in-depth analysis of the 1980 Mr. Olympia! I’ve heard and read many things about this competition over the past 40 years, but I actually learned a couple new things from viewing this. Thank you for sharing.

Look at the thighs on Arnold....damn, it looked like off season time compared to his earlier leg development in previous Olympia wins.

Ed Corney is very over-rated. Platz is badly disproportionate. His cheek muscles and legs and blocky waste looks ugly. Mentzer just doesn’t have enough muscle mass. Boyer Coe looked amazing. Arnold still the best despite not being his personal best.

Mentzer is the most muscular, but he looks misshapen. He also has the biggest gut...which as we know is not caused by steroids, HGH or insulin, but by the overstraining the stomach area. Some people are more prone to this stretching than others, but this can be counteracted by proper weightlifting belt usage. Also his chest was the weakest, though if you check his later photos, he was able to strengthen those muscles...but his gut was of course even bigger by then.

I watched it and IMO Mike Mentzer won it Boyer Coe and Dickerson (who came to my gym weeks before) should have been in the top 4 , Arnold was given that Ben Weider fiddle) and was booed off stage.

Lots of sore losers. Compare some better quality pics and you'll see that someone like Mentzer wasn't even close to beating Arnold.

Weider's Olympia was as flawed and corrupt as Hoffman's contests in the 40's 50s and 60's. Zane and later Franco should have never won. Padilla, Robby, Platz, Mentzer , Poole along with many other amazing bodybuilders got screwed by this corpulent old man.

I was there in Philly 76' when Szkalak won the Mr. America. He didn't "come out of nowhere"... he was the reigning Mr. California and absolutely smashed Johns in every category winning numerous best body part awards. Szkalak got jobbed later in his career because he wouldn't kiss Weider's ass.
