I competed in the WBBG teen age Mr America in 1976. We used to go to all the IFBB and WBBG contests back in the 70's which were held in NYC. The Lurie shows were more like a circus while the Weider shows were more professional. I enjoyed both organizations.

Awesome. Ive never been able to compete because of being diabetic and not responding very well to anabolic steroids or other aas meds. I bet it was amazing to have been there at the very beginning of the movement. Thank you for helping make Bodybuilding what it is today.

I competed in the same contest however 1979. It was my first show and a great experience. It was held at Brooklyn College and I remember in between the pre-judging in the morning and the final contest at night there was Dan Lurie's WBBG Hall of Fame dinner at the Statler-Hilton Hotel which was awesome. Got to hang out and take pictures with Tony Pearson, Bertil Fox and Bruno Sammartino. Great memories! Got to see Dan a few times before he passed away. His grand daughter was a co-worker friend of mine and he came to the office and gave a personally autographed photo of him at the White House with President Reagan when they arm wrestled in the Oval Office. The last time I saw him was at Jones Beach when he and Steve Michalik created the Mr. Jones Beach contest which unfortunately lasted only 2 years.

Well done , another well researched video. But I don't think you quite comprehend the importance and prestige that Steve Reeves had at that time. Reeves , as Graham put it, was looked upon as almost god like. Possibly due to the Hercules comparison , but probably more so to the legions of young men that took up bodybuilding after seeing his movies. I was one of those young men and can assure you no one had ever seen anything like Reeves before. Plus the fact that for years he refused or ignored attempts to get him to appear at ANY EVENT. He had an almost mythological (no pun), reputation. Having married a countess, and supposedly living in a castle in Switzerland. He hadn't appeared in public in decades. Lurie performed quite the miracle.

Kudos for mentioning Dan Laurie it’s good to know the history and what happened back in the day the Joe W did lots for bodybuilding but also manipulated the results to suit his own company.

At that time I used to train as a teenager at the Atlas Health Club in Jersey City, NJ - Joe Spooner trained there at that time and he had probably the best V-Shape in Bodybuilding . - The Atlas Gym was like the Golds Gym of the East - Sergio Oliva, Chris Dickerson, Nubret and many many others occasionally trained there. - Thank you for the Video!

The Mr. America winner, Don Ross, developed a wild reputation. I remember him being an occasional ESPN commentator and making some off color remarks.

@@samuelclemons508 Ross was a piece of work for sure. Knew him when both he and Dave McCann both worked out at Armento's Gym in Detroit in the 1970's. He never bother me in the gym and kind of made it fun though. I believe McCann was a local bouncer in the strip clubs. He never really bother anyone. Ross was with the Dabish brothers (Powerhouse Gym founders) when they came into the gym one night and roughed up Tony Armento was was in his 60's at the time. I was there when it happened cops in the gym and they did nothing. Big court case you can find it on the internet. Tom Platz and Samir Bannout both worked out there at that time as well.

Great to see WBBG covered! I wrote for Muscle Training Illustrated a bit after Dan sold it but did get to meet him a couple times at a Long Island restaurant waiting for tables. Used to go to his warehouse store to buy magazines and supplements early on in my training.

Great night for Serge Nubret and his wife. Proof again the ones showing up are the ones that matter. I know the feeling. Happened to me once. Local contest and my wife kept me from competing and training. We went to the show and she looked at me and said you should go up there you look better than the winner. I said not in my underwear. Missed that title.

DAVE BRANFMAN in 1983 I met Dave in Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island. He was a nice guy with tattoos and fun to be around. Funny how I remember his name almost 40 years later.
