I repotted my Gaya a couple weeks ago. Took them out of their small pot, keeping the soil around the roots to not disturb the plant too much, put them into a bigger pot with sphagnum moss, I’ve noticed all the leaves have brown spots, including my most recent leaf has a little brown spot. Is this normal after a repot? For the older leaves I didn’t like seeing the brown spots, but my newer leaf has a brown spot. That concerns me. So is this just from being repotted? I think I’m watering fine, most of the time the pot is relatively heavy from watering. Am I watering too much? Not enough?
@Carnivorousplanthelp
@Carnivorousplanthelp Күн бұрын
Hey! Repotting won’t usually cause that. The plant could have been stressed when it was repotted and you are seeing the aftershocks of that. It also could have been stressed due to other circumstances and just coincidentally fell around the same time. It can be shocking for them to be repotting and could be the issue. Keep an eye on it and if the spotting continues with the next leaf you might consider other issues. Could be the media got too wet. If the pot is heavy with water then it is more than likely too much. The media should be moist to the touch but not soggy. They start to show signs after the fact. Without a photo it can be hard to diagnose. Keep an eye on it and keep me posted. I will help anyway I can!

How long for open the light in 1 day And how long time for humidifier in 1 day
@Carnivorousplanthelp
@Carnivorousplanthelp Күн бұрын
The humidifier you want to run as needed.z i recommend a humidistat to keep the humidity at a desired level. If the humidifier runs all day just make sure you have good airflow as that will prevent molding. If grown in a grow tent they can handle 12 hours of light but can go lower than that and a bit longer too. They like dappled light for most species.

I'll be testing this this year with a couple of VFTs I have. I do feel they would do better with a dormancy. I think of it sort of like how we tend to feel and perform better after we have a good night's sleep.

I am new to the whole community and came across the biggest arse out there. I did my research on VFT before purchasing some. Someone asked a question and no one was chatting with her about her issue. So, I did my best and tried to help. A "Chad" came at me telling me I didn't know chit and to shut up. My eye brow raised. I just left the group it happened in. Your group, I came across and actually helped a woman with her fly trap, educating her on how to care for the plant. It's a hobby. A fun hobby. If someone wants to come at me for offering advice, I usually lose my chit. I am stubborn and won't let the bullies sway me away. I surprisingly managed to grow a fly trap from seed so, I may know a wee bit!

Sorry to hear that happened to you. If you remember, can you send me the person’s last name so that I can handle the situation. Thank you for stepping in and helping someone. I am very appreciative of that. I have been very sick lately so I haven’t had as much time to devote to ensuring everyone is following the community guidelines. If that ever happens, reach out to me and I will take care of it.

Not this one. You’re right for most plants it is a good sign. However some just are green due to their nature. This one gets a dark red peristome as it ages but that is just part of the aging process. The body stays green the entire time until the pitcher starts to age out!

So I am in the UK. Just over 2 years ago my wife bought me my 1st VFT, from a garden centre. Looked a bit tired and sickly but managed to keep it alive. We got it in September and decided NOT to winter it. Because of how it was looking. Fast forward to around September 2023, we went to another garden centre and got another one whose petioles were twice the size of my first one. We got it home and discovered it had a bad whitefly infestation so trimmed back and attempted to let it recover on its own, long and short the leaves didn't come back but we managed to rid it of whitefly. Briefly wintered both and brought them out early around march time. Both my first and 2nd are absolutely thriving dozens of petioles, and eating well too. Both sit on the upper windowsill of spare bedroom, south facing so sun all day, when we get sun 🤣. I bought 2 new ones from hants flytrap which are twice the size of my 2nd one so really big ones. Also we have a B52 variety, but is only a baby at the moment, it still eats well though. So in my brief experience, I haven't wintered the ones that were settling in, but once established we have and they are thriving. (Keepers less than 3 years) Hope that helps.

That is great insight!!! Thank you for sharing that! Yeah I love to save them from the big box stores but they are definitely way worse off and take a while to bring back than a dedicated grower! I will say though that it is a lot of fun nursing them back to health!

@@Carnivorousplanthelp indeed, luckily we have only got them from garden centres, and some of the bigger stores don't really carry them, (only ever seen them in a b&q (UK version of home depot)) so we'll see how these from the garden centres go. Thankyou for the video - from the conversation we had with the guy at the carnivorous plant centre, he said that they are losing habitat, and that they are good indicators on the wild of issues in soil - think canary in the mines. Also I would like to see the outcome of controlled experiment on various factors, eg petiole size, speed of closure, production of leaves and petioles. Possibly a 3 way study a plant with regular dormancy, one with no dormant period but temperature fairly consistent and a 3rd with grow lights etc. Would be an interesting study. Best of luck 👍👍👍

Thank you for the kind words. Yes they are very endangered in the wild due to several reasons. One is poaching as people want to have them more and more. Another is that this plant contains a compound in it that can be extracted and is being studied heavily for its disease fighting properties. Also, deforestation was an issue. That has been stalled due to national parks though. Thankfully there is a pretty robust tissue culture industry around these plants that are allowing for people to collect and pushing poachers out.

MA grower here, last winter was my first winter with any carnivorous plants. I was clueless about what to do with them, but I figured if I threw them into my mini greenhouse for the winter they'd come back nice and strong in spring. In truth, about half died, and the other half had mixed results, some stayed a bit green all winter even through frozen soil, others fully died back. The ones that fully died back have been struggling to grow all spring/summer, the ones is pseudo dormancy have done better, but not thriving. I think I've found a better spot for them this year, and I'm hoping for better results next year by increasing the insulation in my mini greenhouse for the winter, but maybe I'll keep one inside under my grow lights and see what happens. Great video, lots of good points and interesting perspectives.

Good debate topic. Im a fairly new carnivorous plant hobbyist. Ive been caring for them for only maybe 3 or 4 years but I've always grown or attempted to grow my VFTs outside. Im also a put all your plants outside kinda guy which to me is one of the best characteristics of things like VFTs and sarracenias, that I dont have to bring them indoors in my region during the colder months. I would like to know the long term effects of indoor vs outdoor growing but for me its still going to be a grow it outdoor and let it go through its natural dormancy choice. I also like to push the envelope and grow my Highland nepenthes types in Intermediate conditions though. :))

Yeah outdoor is always better for the natural cycle of the plants for sure! That would be a cool experiment. Get an plant and divide it in half. Then grow one outdoors and the other indoors and see how it goes!! That would be cool!!

I am curious to see if a 50f maintained dormancy with reduced photo period would work. If it were then a root cellar would be adequate and we could eliminate the refrigerator. Maintaining humidity in a refrigerator is my personal hell.

Well done! The rules are a bit different in a grow tent vs a windowsill vs a greenhouse. I have an evaporative cooler in my greenhouse that works quite well, but on warmer days my fogger can run all day near the cooler. Everthing gets wet early in the day from the fogger and the heat of the day evaporates the water on the leaves. I'm more careful in moderate temperatures and the fogger runs occasionally. I have tons of air movement, so this works for me.
@Carnivorousplanthelp

Thank you!! That is awesome to hear!! Yeah that works great with good air movement. I ran one for a while but the grow tent just got too small and the airflow couldn’t get into the base of the plants, so I had to cut back on the humidifier.

I've only been into Wndowsill growing these carnies since Mid-April thanks to you - I'm also learning the hard way that N. Robcantleyi is extreeemly picky with overwatering! I had to throw it out the bag acclimation because there was just way too much moisture in the bag, I noticed the leaves starting to yellow very fast! I've had a Hamata pitchering profusely and it's somehow taking it a lot easier than the Robcantleyi. I'm still promising to gift you a cutting from one of my collection once they grow out! Who cares what some random troll thinks? Don’t let them win. If anything they are just helping your algorithm. Post what you like and if they want to take time out of their day to troll you then they have bigger problems to deal with then hating on a KZbin channel. I feel sorry for them more than anything. That’s why I just wish them the best. They have to be profoundly unhappy in their life to troll. Remember they don’t know you at all and honestly probably don’t know what they are talking about. You’re welcome. You won’t please everyone. As long as the information you are given is correct it doesn’t matter if they disagree or do it a different way. There are a lot of ways to grow these plants; much more than people would want you to think. If it is good advice and is just alternative to what you are showing then keep that as it can help people. If there is no substance to it either leave it for the algorithm or delete the comment. You are in control of your channel not them.
