The simplest ways to kook food is wait until only hot coals remain when all the flames are gone just put youre dish on the hot coals. Just keep an eye on it.
@redoleary44 ай бұрын
That's accurate for cooking but not necessarily the best way to bake, in my experience proper coals are better made from hardwoods and if you camp where it's primarily softwood it tough to make good coals.

Question, does your carbon felt stop the stove from spilling alcohol if it tips over by accident. I want something with a safety measure just in case. Can this stove be made without a cat tin can? How about one just using pop cans only?
@redoleary45 ай бұрын
No the carbon felt is just a wick, fuel will still spill if the there's more fuel than the wick can hold (which there normally is). You could likely make this from only pop cans if you could find the some with the proper nesting properties. It's easy for me I have a cat, but even if you didn't the cat food is probably cheaper than a can of pop. 😀

Really helpful video, I have the GSI stainless kettle but wanted a nesting pot set and have had my eye on the Eagle 0.7 for awhile. I would have preferred the Zebra as I think they are slightly better quality (and the inner bowl is a real plus), but like you, having the kettle inside was important, so I bought the Eagle 0.7 kettle which arrived today. I also have the MSR 1.6L and 775ml stowaway pots for car camping. The 775ml pot nests inside the 1.6L so I have a complete cook kit for my needs in two pots. Thanks again for sharing.

So simple & easy to make !! Thank you so much for sharing such a tiny light weight wonderful hybrid FF stove. I also saw a similar capillary action stove whereby instead of the lines (bends on inner can / wick) being parallel to each other, they came to a point (like upside-down V = " ^ ") and made quite a powerful jet (or jets). I also like the fact that you don't have to buy any carbon felt. BTW: I like the comment about making a wider base from one of the other viewers and would also like say that if a wider base needed - you can also use a Vienna Sausage can and do the same thing. VS cans are just slightly larger. Thanks again & hope you all have a safe holiday season. Peace out : -)

Excellent unbiast review. Thank you so much redoleary4. Two way zipper would be good, better sewing for the bug net and all around, and reinforcement at ridgeline where the fabic tore. I am also worried about the tension on the walls at the foot and head end from the spreader bars. Perhaps reinforcement there as well. I kinda guessed the insulated pad would not keep you warm in colder weather. a small wool blanket, fitting the pad under or over the pad and somehow secured to prevent bunching up. Reflectix could be sweaty for me. Definitely need a ground sheet for going to ground. All that is not really a problem for me as I mostly kayak/canoe camp. Straps are not an issue for me either; I can buy my own. I like the Warbonnet straps and buckle for gadget-less simplity or just ropes secured to a nice long and wide set of tree straps with a binner so I dont abrase the rope when I tighten it. Trees are sometimes big where I live. The small tarp design is fine for me. It is kind of like a Hennessy tarp which can serve as a winter cover like the Warbonnet xlc for colder weather or in case the moon is just too bright. I generally take a second much bigger tarp just to be on the safe side, but a larger tarp could be optional. Just make sure it is drip proof. I am always on the lookout for a hammock that I can easily and comfortably go to ground with without having to take a small tent and all the stuff afore mentionned that goes with it, as well as my hammock. Overall an excellent design Haven Tents. Entry on two sides is a big plus. Certainly thinking out of the box.

Thanks for the awesome review! I just ordered my XL. I keep hearing people talking about the tarp being too small. I too like an oversized tarp/rainfly for my hammock, but I'm guessing that since this is designed as a hammock tent, the fabric is supposed to be water repellant negating the need for the oversized tarp/rainfly. I will find out as soon as mine arrives.

Funny we came to the same end. I was looking for ways to reduce the weight of my FF stove. I tried my 6.5oz with revolver chamber like design for capillary (I do mine with a slight diagonal angle, almost looks like rifling of a barrel). But had to use carbon felt to make up the gap. I had some 7.5oz Dew around and tried that with better success but the carbon felt combined with the capillary bends went through too much alcohol. So then I scrapped the felt and went with a 12oz cans capillary bend portion cut like you did. I tried in vain to get it to fit in there by doing more bends and I did get it in there but it didn't perform well. So to bridge the gap between the 7.5oz and 12oz can, I ended up doing the same thing as you. I do one thing slightly different than you for stability with the FF can
@Hangs4Fun3 жыл бұрын
What I do is cut the top off with a side cutting can opener, remove a small amount of the FF circumference in the middle. The piece that came from the top is going to become a stabile base so flip it (and reverse it, LOL). The lower portion of the can (aka the bowl) is going to be pressed into the new stabile base, so first expand the base a little (the thin walled part). You can do this how ever you want, I just use another can and slowly work around it until it's expanded just enough to slide the bowl into it. Once there, you can use a piece of wood to carefully press the bowl into the new base. Now trim all your can components that make up the capillary bends, the stand such that you are back to the capillary bend stopping at the top of the bowl and your stand is at 1" higher than the top of the bowl. Lastly get your 4mm of clearance back to your simmer ring with the new lower height. This REALLY adds a lot of stability to this stove. However if you need a bowl with more than 2ounces of fuel, this is NOT the design for you. I typically use 5/8oz, and appreciate the lower height and more stabile base.
@Hangs4Fun3 жыл бұрын
Oh, one other thing, since you too use 23oz cans. Definitely make yourself a "snuff can". Use the bottom of a 23oz can cut slightly taller than your stoves height. Then if you are unsure of how much alcohol you need (due to water temp, wind, altitude, etc).. go with 1oz for your two cups. When you hit your bowl, put the snuff can over it to put out the fire and then you can recover the unused alcohol. To make that process safer, I put a slight crease in the top edge of the FF bowl, so that when I pour the access alcohol back into my container, it is focused into a spout like flow (that crease doesn't have to be big to accomplish this)
@redoleary43 жыл бұрын
Great minds think alike. Yours sounds like it has some nice improvement, and the snuff can is a great idea too. Thanks for sharing.
@erich13943 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to design something like this but having the alcohol vapor pass through a small orifice before the chimney. I'm hoping the higher velocity / higher turbulence will let me get away with a shorter design.

Excellent review, thanks for taking the time to produce it. I just received my XL this afternoon, I put it up in the back yard. I didn’t notice any problems with the bug netting on mine, probably 1 production run later than yours. I do agree that the zippers would be more convenient if they were double slide types, but mine has them reversed (one side the slide is on the foot, the other side it is on the head end). The tree straps are entirely too short, in place of sending pretty limited use straps Haven might consider not providing straps, I noticed they now sell whoopie slings as a option. I put whoopie slings on mine before the initial hang because of the short straps. The strapping attachment has heat shrink on one side, but missing on the other. I am sure quality control issues would be maddening for Haven with all the Covid issues, if they can’t visit the manufacturer. Weight isn’t a problem for me, I will use it for motorcycle camping. It is very comfortable, it sure is! Overall, quite satisfied in initial impression.
@redoleary43 жыл бұрын

Excellent overview thank you Red. Re: cold back. I've experienced the same using pads in hammocks. I don't believe it's the pads inability to insulate your body heat, but that it has to contend with cold wind. So a wind break like a larger tarp or a ground sheet wrapped around the bottom might help. And or Or putting CCF foam under the pad as a thermal barrier. I'm yet to try these yet but they're ideas i have. With the foam I think you'll want full pad coverage so you might need to go to a foam supplier and cut to size, or use 2 foam pads and cut them to size and maybe tape together. Probably wouldn't hurt to line the edges of the pad.

I just set my XL up for the first time and spent some time puzzling over exactly the same issues you described here. Mine was an August pre-order, and has the same issues with the funky sewing at the vents/end points, along the bug screens and at the reinforcement patches. I, too, like the tent despite all this. It's wider than I thought it would be, and like you said, not claustrophobic at all. I'm looking forward to spending tonight in it (80°F and stormy). Not sure if there's any connection at all, but the last batch of sails we ordered from the same factory in China that has made them for us for years came out miss-sewn as well. They told us that they were forced to relocate their factory and incurred a significant labor turnover in the process.

This looks like the perfect way to sleep, the best of both a tent and a hammock. You want something like a wool blanket doubled over and sewn , the same size as your pad, then put some little diagonal bungee cord across the corners to hold it to the pad underneath, then a camping quilt or even a normal single bed duvet cut down lengthwise rather than a sleeping bag. Then I am sure you will be nice and warm.
