I remember seeing this in the theater in 2000 with a few good friends. All of us were blown away after the viewing. It completely exceeded our expectations and challenged our assumptions.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain I did NOT see it in the theater (which bums me out). It’s shown its quality, and if that rewatch is any indication, that will continue! (Really hope the new one is good!)

There is one scene in the extended edition I really like. Even though Ridley might prefer the theatrical, this one scene adds gravitas to the characters in a sentimental way. Maximus and Juba are talking on a roof about their families. Juba talks about dying before he can see his wife and daughter. Maximus says his wife and son are already dead. Juba eventually says "You will meet them again. But not yet. Not yet" The last line in the movie where Juba is placing his hand on the sand covering the figurines is "Now we are free. I will see you again. But not yet, not yet..." is a callback to that scene on the rooftop. It lends emotional importance to something that is only in the extended version when they have that exchange on the rooftop.

Hmm…I think when I was pulling footage from the movie, I pulled the theatrical, and that scene is in my video…? But either way, yes, I love that scene - Djimon is pulling from something there, because I remember that being his scene, and probably where I was like, “Yep, this dude’s awesome!”

@order42show Odd...I've seen the theatrical tons of times, and I don't remember seeing it until I viewed the extended version. Very odd. One of the versions doesn't have it, and being the theatrical, I think that's the one without it. But yes! Such a good scene, and you understand the importance of them telling each other "not yet".

I remember gladiator being all the rage with my friends back in middle school and then hearing about it again some years later from friends who love it. I’ve just never taken the time to sit down and watch it. I might have to rent it this weekend to see what all the fuss is about.

I’d be curious to hear what you think of it, completely removed from all the Awards hype and such! The digital version is actually on sale on Apple right now for $5.

Gladiator. What a freaking amazing movie. I absolutely love both Alien and Blade Runner. But I think Gladiator takes the cake as my favorite Ridley Scott movie. As far as I'm concerned pretty much everything in this movie is perfect. It came out when I was relatively young and I loved it then and still love it to this day. The music still gives me goosebumps and the story is as moving as ever. Gladiator is masterpiece and is definitely one of my all time favorites. I don't know how G2 could possibly live up to this one but I'm still excited to check it out.

Yeah, I’m super scared of G2. I just don’t want it to tarnish anything! And you’re right, that music…maybe it’s because I don’t listen to it outside of the movie, but it still makes me tear up!
