Hi Nic,hope all is well with you.I've just come back from a 4 day trip to Brittany/Normandy.The weather was a bit iffy for Sept but we were B&Bing it at a great Bikers B&B so there was always a hit shower and an evening meal waiting for us. Anyway, just reporting in that we used the "Peg" trick at the ferry ports and it worked a treat so thanks for the tip. Any trips planned? Safe riding and all the best. Richard (Brizzle)

@@richardfews2113 Hey Richard. Great to hear the peg worked 🤣. B&B is a great way to go especially with a meal at the end of the day and no packing up and resetting up a tent every day🤷‍♂️. Shame the weather wasn't at its best but hope you had a great trip anyway. Motorcycling has taken a bit of a back seat since my Norway trip. Lots of travel with my wife who has now also retired, including an 8 week road trip (car) south to Albania then ferry to Italy for northern route home earlier this year. Currently sat in the passenger seat of a hire car in Greece. Still travelling just in a different mode. Take care, thanks for the update. Nick

I think people look at 500 cc's differently now than they did decades ago. People commonly rode motorcycles of that displacement on the highway. In fact it was so common that Honda once made a fully dressed touring bike in the 500cc displacement. Honda GL500 Silverwing Interstate.

speedo over-read is pretty standard everywhere, it's a requirement here, 5% over with a margin of error of 3%, but this doesn't mean that you don't get more than 8% over -read... my bike reads 10% over, the math is easy so I don't really care... it's more the fact that it can make it dangerous when you ride a different bike that reads accurately, but handles differently... and that corner you are used to seeing 100km/h on the speedo while going around is actually too fast on the bike you don't know.

Isn't it funny how the ticked boxes become the wrong boxes to tick after a while? with all the boxes ticked when I brought my first actual motorcycle. the ones I would change are. the 250cc engine... yes it does fine around town for commuting, yes it can do longer distances, and maintain the open road speed limit. but because the bottom of the bike is so light with the little single, and it is a taller bike with big fairings up high. It gets blown around much more than bikes with twin Cyl engines, especially the ones that sit much lower. It's a V-strom 250SX. and I wish I had decided to get the Honda CB500X for the Larger engine & a couple of other small features that are actual necessities. if only Suzuki brought out a V-strom 450 with the addition of Switchable ABS, Hazard lights and twin front discs over the 250, nothing more, nothing less just those things and a 450cc P2 engine with 45 to 47 hp.

Thanks Nick very useful. I am at advancing years (74) and have just bought the same bike, hopefully to replace a Versys 300 X and an NC 750 X DCT, although keeping the NC a while to see if I really can live without it! As I haven't yet collected the CB it was useful to get your views about the power and everyday use competencies of the bike. I have done comparisons on spec amongst all three of these and they are very similar on power to weight ratio but the NC wins out on torque by a very big margin so that is my concern. I was glad to hear about the lightness of the clutch as I have left thumb arthritis and that isn't helped by heavy clutches. MPG is on a par with the NC. I am recently returned from a 2k miles trip in eight days to southern France following +1,000 cc bikes not hanging about and managed just under 80 MPG on the NC with a heavy luggage load and single rider. All the best for the channel and I will follow your trip as Scandinavia is on my hit list. If you are interested you could have a look at my channel and see some footage from a trip to the high Himalayas in 2015. Some challenging roads there and scenery on steroids. @donlowdon It is just a hobby page so not an earner for me. Also footage in the English Lake District on the passes with the Club Kawasaki lads and lasses.

I have just completed a 6 week big EU tour completing 4,053 miles on an electra glide. Bad habits mean I always take too much with a big Ortlieb bag on the rear seat for clothes and utility bits. Tools & puncture repair, litre oil and wet weather gear in one pannier, cooking equipt; in the other. Air bed/sleeping bag in trunk and camping gear bagged on the rear carrier. Cumbersome when sometimes manoeuvring but when riding, no problem. If I could afford Airbnb, hotel and/or eat out everyday, I could more than half my luggage weight.
