I'd seriously consider one of these. I'm not as young and strong as I was so think this would be the most likely upgrade for me. Currently riding a sub 200cc farm bike which will do the speed limit here.

They use tubes because you might be a rock-hopper & ding your rims on rocks. Tubeless tyre, that'll now need a rescue team to come up the mountain to get your bike. Tubed, no biggie.

you forgot about unexpected stops, they happen a lot during riding offroad

Most of us don’t fall because we put a foot down on the wrong side of the bike during a regular stop. We lose balance for another reason, tip over and find no spot to place a foot or slip.

Imagine getting stuck in the backcountry because a rock hit your kickstand sensor and the bike won't run. Must be how Pierer feels now. All machines can break but some are asking for it. I've wanted to buy a 701/690 for years but keep hearing stories like this. I'll keep my XR650L - it keeps pace everywhere but the fast lane on the hwy anyways. The XR650L has a kickstand switch too. Strip the wire and tape it to the frame, problem solved. More accessible than buying a "dongle" when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere.

The XR650L is bulletproof. I'd keep it too

If I am an expert mountain biker with decades of proven experience and have a very small amount of dirt bike experience, do you think I can handle learning how to ride a motorcycle even if it's a T7? For reference, I'm 6'1" and 210 lbs.

On the slope in at the start of the video, you'd have to be a giant to be able to flat foot on the downhill side of the bike. Planning where you stop, being aware of the terrain is so important.

Can't see the need of tall, heavy bikes except of long straight streches with lots of luggage. We need right tools for the right job.

The slightest miscalculation with a 500lb bike and it goes down instantly, you cannot always choose a good spot. With a 600 lb bike? Best to practice.....1 trick, dont ride a 500lb bike off road.

Great reminder. When I started riding my 1st dirt bike, a KTM 990 in 2009, riders much better than I was were constantly dropping their new KTMs and GS bikes....into creeks, down hills and off the trail. Why? Because they were very experienced enduro riders familiar with 250-350 bikes and never had to really think about where they were stopping. A big bike, especially a tall big bike, requires that you think ahead. From putting your foot down to how you are going to deal with a narrow downhill that has a stopper. You have to always be ahead of the bike. There is something special about putting big bikes in small places, but the implications of not thinking it through can be serious. Be safe out there!

Enjoy your broken foot. Been there. Done that. Been riding almost every day for 37 years. Motocross boots are the way to go even for street riding. Broken my foot wearing street rated motorcycle boots when only the bike fell on top of me, walked away with just a bruise when wearing motocross boots (Alpinestars) when a Honda Civic ran over me. If you are cheap and don’t want to spend the money, Fox Comp MX boots are probably the way to go, otherwise get some Leatts 4.5 or Alpinestars.

To be a full on ADV guy, the bike needs to be near 500 lbs or well over. A whole new set of skills needs to be learned. Broken bones can happen....because every dirt rider always wished his bike weighed 250lbs more than it does.

Now only if the can leave dealership floors without massive cracks/seperations in their frames.

Key difference is that you’re not doing the same kind of riding with both; ADV boots and enduro boots are each made for different types of riding so of course they’ll be different.
