I think I had Baked Alaska once, but I can't remember the meringue. Baked Alaska is one of those things they prepare on cruise ships or at fancy restaurants to show off. They are not everyday desserts. Too fiddly. Hard to make and not good enough to be worth the extra effort. Still, Mrs. H did a good job as far as I can tell. And it's worth trying once. But next time, just make the pound cake and eat it with ice cream. (Or berries and whipped cream, which is even better.)

This particular type of meringue is soft marshmallow on the inside and a fine crust on the outside.

You want a challenge try to get Baklava to turn out. LOL. I never could. The meringue is mainly to insulate the insides so don't overthink it, might leak or something.Something I loved to make was Penuchi.

If you do a simple Google image search for Baked Alaska you will see so many different ways of making and serving a Baked Alaska. Some have that classic "igloo" shape, others are rectangle shape, log shape, pie shape, layer cake shape, or square. And they have all flavors of ice cream and flavors of cake. There are ones with multiple layers, and some with just two. Some have fruit mixed in with the ice cream. On some the meringue is light and on some its very dark. And some show it being served with the meringue set aflame (Probably after being coated with some kind of liquor). The point being, it doesn't look like there is actually any 'Right' way or 'wrong' way to make a Baked Alaska as long as what you've made turns out to be one you like, you are doing great!

Oh no! My grandparents fought over this- my grandad loved it but my grandma HATED making it. I am not a meringue fan and this is too much work for me for a questionable result. The H family did an amazing job on a very difficult dish.

Great job! The méringue is supposed to be quite stiff and fairly browned. It's a good dessert but not a favorite. Fantastic job though, Mrs. H! They take a lot of effort and timing. I've only ever had them on a cruise, never attempted to make one. So, sending you a huge round of applause!

when my daughter was six i gave her the choice for her birthday cake. I gave her a cookbook and said she could choose her cake and mom would make it. I thought she would choose the heart shaped cherry chip cake as it was cherry flavored and covered in pink icing which was right in her wheel house. No... she chose baked Alaska but the ice cream needed to be blueberry cheese cake flavored. I was a surprised M om Her and her friends, all six of them, sat outside at the picknick table eating baked Alaska. None of the other girls ever heard of it but that it was soooo cool to have your cake and ice cream in one dessert. I have never made it since that day but we do still giggle about it. Thanks for the memory

Im from New Jersey also. Taylor ham, egg and cheese is a staple in Jersey, but i like to add bacon to my sandwiches, it makes them a little saltier, but much tastier

I have been making ham, egg and cheese sandwiches for 30 years. My kids grew up on them for lunch or breakfast. Good with fried spam or bacon as well. It's actually a different of McDonald's Egg McMuffin.

Taylor Ham pork roll was created in 1856 in Trenton, New Jersey. Taylor ham with ketchup has been my favorite sandwich for 65+ years. I also fry it with with scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese on a toasted Everything Bagel or a Kaiser Roll with a little ketchup was a childhood staple. My Highschool had a small breakfast setup in the mornings and our lunch ladies made an awesome Taylor Ham Egg And Cheese for $2.75.

We've got a special Mom & Pop here in the 'burbs of Houston, Jersey Bagels. They make authentic Bagels & offer Taylor Ham. I've had several Taylor Ham (Pork Roll) Egg & Cheese on toasted Salt Bagel sandwiches. 😋

Well, as a South Jersey girl, this is pork roll not "Taylor Ham". I usually put ketchup on the roll then add the pork roll, egg, and American cheese. Northern New Jersey calls it Taylor Ham. Central and Southern New Jersey calls it a pork roll sandwich.

"Hey" from the Tampa Bay area of Florida, USA. Hope the "H Family" is doing excellent ! Enjoy the heck outta ya videos. Both reactionary and creatively. Mrs. H continues to exhibit not only improving, but currently held culinary skills that has me raiding the frig after watching one of cooking experiences cause I got a craving. I can't always duplicate her meals, but do find something close or something that I've enjoyed for years to satisfy my craving for a meal. Yes, I am weak when it comes to seeking something tasty. LOL Well done Darlin. :) Have fun and be safe. :)

Taylor ham is delicious! Mrs. H is a star for making these. It makes me wonder if you've ever tried spiral cut, honey glazed ham? If not, you might want to put it on your list of American foods to try. It's outstanding and it's what a lot of families choose for Christmas dinner. Thanks for another great video.

FDA in the US says it legally can't be sold as "ham" which is why Taylor's trademarked the name "pork roll". Ham is so affordable in the southern US that pork roll doesn't sell very well there and you have to be dirt poor to want pork roll. Country ham, egg, and cheese are popular in many US breakfast restaurants.

@@LarryHatch it’s not a substitute for ham it’s a completely different product. That’s like comparing hotdogs and kielbasa. When I want a hotdog, I want a hotdog and when I want kielbasa I wantkielbasa.

My favourite way of doing chicken wings : Marinate overnight in buttermilk (you can easily make buttermilk - 1 cup full cream milk + 1 tablespoon white vinegar, stir together - rest for 5 mins - strain the bodgy bits out if you want but as a marinade, I don’t bother) Next day in some flour, then egg, and coat with decently finely crushed up various flavoured, including spicy, corn chips / Doritos or whatever brand. (A blender makes short work of this). Cook hot in the bbq for 30 - 40 minutes. Can add whatever dry seasoning to the flour or wet seasoning to the egg - bloody superb

As a jersey boy myself, I’m wondering where you got the pork roll and what brand it was because it is difficult to find outside of the state let alone the country. For the best results, Taylor, ham, egg, and cheese should be made with American cheese, and the most common way to have it is with salt, pepper, and ketchup. You can do without the salt and even the pepper, but I think you should really try it withthe ketchup.

They sell Taylor Ham at Publix supermarkets all throughout Florida. Lots of folks from Jersey retire here. When I lived in Jersey, I would stop at Wawa on the way to work for pork roll, egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll. Good way to start the day.

Oooooo, I LOVE crescent rolls filled with a mixture of cream cheese and chopped green olives with some olive "juice". It's delicious! Cream cheese and crab with green onions would be good too. Put in the filling, and pinch them closed before baking. I almost can't believe you made your own! You can do anything!!! ❤
