Hi! John. Thanks for the great video's. I'm not in anyway involved with aviation engines but I am trying to revive some very used and abused 50 year old sled engines so I have been going to school on your work. Can the inner section of the Rotax cranks be disassembled to change the inner bearings? I can't seem to find a manual or any information on the process. THANKS
@RotacRepair9 күн бұрын
@@donsipes Hi Don, thank you for the kind compliment! Center bearings replacement is yes and no. On the no side, I don’t believe you’ll find any manual, sled , bike or aircraft that contains this information. On the yes side I’m able to dismantle the centre section, replace the bearing and rephrase at 180° then finish the assembly. Trueing the crankshaft to as close to zero as possible. Aircraft cranks must be perfectly phased, straight and true. Some sled shops will overhaul crankshafts, however I believe the phasing error and truing specs are extremely large by comparison. Happy sledin!

If not maybe you know someone I could contact up your way that is knowledgeable about the 80-90ies engines. If you’d be willing to talk on the phone for a few minutes some evening maybe we could set something up ,I have a few more questions you could probably answer.The fellow on the phone at Royal was great but he’s a parts guy not a mechanic.

Thanks for the video! I had never tested this myself but looks like you got the same results as I saw elsewhere using the funnel on phase separated fuel.

Unfortunately I forgot to include in the video the amount of fluid that didn’t pass through the funnel filter. The funnel sump holds approximately 80 ml to the base of the filter. The amount I poured back into the jar was 120 ml. So it appears at least 40 ml of pure water didn’t pass through the filter. It seems to me that the funnel worked as Mr. Funnel specified by not passing that amount water.
@MXZ-or6nk16 күн бұрын

You know, u find it amazing how an expert or a scientist in sime field always wants to prove the consumer is wrong because we dont understand how something works or we aren't smart enough or whatever? I find it quite the opposite . Im the quy in the field, the persin using the components or equipment in the real world. Engineers and experts never set up test for everyday use. That fuel expert is so eager to prove you wrong when in fact you proved that for your application, you are spot on. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell that anything visible to the naked eye in a fuel sample is bad. Ethanol is horrible in fuel. We didn't have near the problems with fuel before thwy started adding crap to it. Id much tather have a settlement bowl on any fuel system to trap the contaminants. Its just common sense. As long as your fuel pickup is above the bottom of the tank you'll never have a problem. I dont want water to be able to be mixed in my fuel period. Its a disaster waiting to happen. One variable he mentioned is very true and adds to the danger of ethanol containing fuel and that is most every batch of fuel is different. Bo exact standards on percentage of ethanol. This is absurd! Of course ethanol fuel was never considered for aviation i guess because any idiot can see it can only be bad long term. I've been a mechanic all my life and a pilot most of my adult life. I deal components all the time that are designed to do one thing in paper in a lab or in a controlled test environment that just dont work so well in the field. Ive always said that engineers and designers should have to get their hands dirty in the field first before they dream up these new ideas. Looks like these problems are just the new norm and we just have to learn to live with them but it sure does make it hard on the technicians working on stuff in the field. Thx for the videos. I always learn something new watching them.
@RotacRepair23 күн бұрын
Thank you so very sincerely for your comment. I too have been a mechanic since completing school and a pilot for almost 20 years now. We absolutely deal with mechanical things directly every day. I can’t count the times I’ve said “whoever came up with thing should be fired”. I believe you’ve probably said that as well! I agree with all your comments, especially not picking up fuel from the bottom of the tank. Never was a fan of that, however with E10 its is potentially leading to disaster. Hopefully presenting information from my experiences and knowledge with E10 fuel will lead to more discussion. Then the dramatic fuel differences we’re now dealing with will be realized by more pilots. Unfortunately I believe most pilots don’t realize there is an issue. “We don’t know what we don’t know “ so hopefully discussions and information may save a few engines and pilots. I consider my efforts to be successful should this be the result.

I always use the Mr Funnel. There is a small area at the bottom where liquid remains which is below the filter in the center. I saw you pour the remainder back into the glass jar. It must have contained some of this bottom fluid below the filter. Did you check to see how much liquid was above the filter element?
@RotacRepair24 күн бұрын
A very good point I completely missed. I believe it was more total volume than the sump area. I didn’t empty that jar yet. I’ll measure the jar volume and the sump volume and get back to you tomorrow. Thanks for pointing that out.

Very good. When if finish refueling I pour the remaining gas in the sump area back into the fuel can. I use plastic jugs which generally don’t have condensation. However this may have a disadvantage of overtime concentrating material that have been separated out by the Mr. Filter.

Thanks for this presentation. If the build-up was severe in the carbs, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better or more cost effective to just replace them, ( if a shop was charging hourly rates to clean ),. As for fiberglass tanks, for those like me who don't know, is there some kind of tank treatment one could add? A liquid liner/sealer of some kind perhaps? One that's not resin-based or effected by ethanol?
@RotacRepair24 күн бұрын
I successfully cleaned the resin deposits and then cleaned them as usual. Then basic carburetor kits were then fitted. Those carburetors are out flying again. As for the fuel tank sealer treatment, it won’t stick to a tank that’s had premix fuel oil in it. I have spoken about this in at least one of my ethanol related videos. I believe fiberglass fuel tanks should be taken out of service and replaced with aluminum. The only exception would be absolute proof in writing from the tank manufacturer that their resin is compatible with ethanol. Thank you for comment. Happy flying!

Excellent video presentation. I'm lucky to have an aluminum tank. I sure wish we could buy premium gas in Canada without Ethanol. I am planing on using 100LL and adding Decalin. What is your experience with this use?
@RotacRepair25 күн бұрын
Thank you Peter, I’m not sure I understand your need to use 100LL as you said you have an aluminum fuel tank. I know 100LL is available at your airport, however it’s expensive and burns dirty. Decalin has been used by many, however I have no direct knowledge. Decalin in 16 oz container is $50.00 CDN @ 1 oz per 10 usgal. $97.00 CDN (local price) for 38 litres (10 usgal) of 100LL PLUS $3.00 for additive, equals $100.00 CDN! That’s some expensive fuel for an engine that will run on cheap (comparatively speaking) car gasoline at $57.00 (local price) for 38 litres. Plus the spark plugs will only fire properly for 20 to 25 hours on 100LL. My spark plugs go 50 hours plus on car gasoline. Not a rant, just my opinion for what it’s worth. And I’m looking forward to see your third door installation. Have a great day.

I have watched videos of people adding a mist of water in the intake of a car to increase fuel milage. I believe the theory is that the mist of water will turn into flash steam and increase compression. Do you have any thoughts on that?
@RotacRepair25 күн бұрын
My experience with adding water into the engine goes way back, as an automotive tune up specialist. I used to pour a fine stream of water directly into the carburetor on a running warm engine, while working the throttle by hand. Not enough water to stall it out though! This process would remove the carbon from the combustion chamber resulting in elimination of engine pinging. Carbon holds heat and can glow, therefore resulting in ignition before the spark plug would fire. Cleaned the valve face and seats nicely too! Fighter aircraft used water injection in the Second World War to reduce engine detonation during shot periods of full power throttle . I invented my own system for water cooling the brakes on one of the endurance stock cars I raced. It used a window washer pump, power through the stop light switch out to nozzles that misted onto the brake rotors. The water tank was disguised as a ballast weight. I used that system to out brake the competition for most of a season. The race series technical thought it was an advantage, sure was! and I had to remove the entire system. Man that stuff was fun! Great memories.

I sell gas for a living and have for 20 years. We regularly sample and lab test our gas. The color and clarity doesn’t really tell you anything about its quality. It’s different from different refineries. Some will be more yellowish or cloudy than others. The only way to test it for quality is send it to a lab.

Something to consider. There are videos of other you tubers testing the Mr funnel. It works fine to separate pure gas(non ethanol) and water, however when there is ethanol gas with water in phase separation it goes through the funnel. So basically if you use ethanol gas the funnel won’t do anything for you.

@RotacRepairАй бұрын
A great question! I personally prefer on 503/582 to use two wraps before the twist using .032” safety wire on the blue “plastic” line. On the rubber line I find the “fuel injection” clamps give a 360° seal. On 912s I use the one piece “oetiker” crimp on clamps, both for the fuel hose and the “fire stop” covering.
