Thanks for the video! I'm swedish but the resources here still aren't great on the trains, and my anxiety is through the roof if i can't prepare myself for when im traveling (especially). This has definitely helped

Take a plane. Really. This isn't worth 7 hours even in the day time scenery. And they make you switch in East Munich for the last 15 minutes. Nonsense.

I'm going to germany from australia. thinking of flying into rome and taking this train to get to munich. Reckon it's worth it instead of just flying from rome? I know i'd miss out on a lot of the italian scenery since it's traveling at night but I'd see some of the austrian scenery in the morning

How safe is the malpensa express? Worried about theft

Hi! None of the times I have taken this train have I had a problem with thieves nor do I know anyone who has. The train as well as the stations have security cameras. From my experience, I can say that I felt safe because there's always Malpensa Express staff on the train and checks that passengers travel with a valid ticket. I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean. To travel onboard ICE trains you need a valid ticket or pass. There are some types of tickets where you are required to also show your ID or passport to the inspector. I hope this answers your question. The double-deck cars are starting to show their age; they were built in 1995 and are definitely in need of refurbishment after over 25 years of service. Some actually have been refurbished already IIRC in late 2019 (i.e. shortly after your video was recorded), but without changing the overall cabin layout. The standard cabins in the WLBmz-type cars are somewhat odd, as - like you found out - the normal sleeper cabins are quite cramped because of the staircases taking up a lot of precious space (it's a bit better on the lower deck, as there you don't have the sloped roof, so it's a bit more spacious). Also, the center compartment 13 (which sits above the aircon/electrical compartment) is a bit bigger (mainly because it has a straight staircase leading directly into it without a landing). The deluxe cabins (upper deck in cars of type WLABmz) on the other hand are huge in comparison, as are the "single-deck" compartments 2 & 22 above the bogies. Maybe a rebuild could be developed from the 'capsule' design ÖBB uses in their new NightJet rolling stock. This may allow for a stack of 3 capsules (vs. 2 in single-deck cars) in standard class, or 2 capsules on the lower deck and fewer, but larger compartments on the upper level (e.g. by halfway using the space over the electrical compartment).
