The Star Wars sets were the epitome of shelf warmers, I don't think it influenced G2 that much.
@skybirdmakesКүн бұрын
Oh they definitely sat on shelves, especially the later waves when interest in CCBS generally seemed to be waning, but there are few circumstances where it helped Bionicle, especially being introduced to market at the same time and the second wave, the "budget" wave
@HanesAnimatesКүн бұрын
Honestly, I loved the designs of the sets - probably some of my favourite out of all Bionicle (And I say that while having a decent amount of G1 sets). I find the CCBS system so much more modular and versatile. I honestly don't get the hate for CCBS, I never have. Ever since HF came along, people have been abhorring it with zeal. Why? Sure, G1 parts did have a certain classic, nostalgic vibe, but they felt so much more constraining in terms of creativity. Anyways, the main reason for G2's downfall I think is just the lack of advertising. Nobody knew about it's existence, like I know people who were geniunely fond about Bionicle in their childhoods and were shocked to realise it came back and sad they missed it's return.

good video, but it didnt answer the questions i came to the video for i would have liked you to have mentioned the "gamefeel". do the pieces feel like lego? when 2 studs are pushed together, do they feel like lego? do they grip as strongly or losely? same questions for ball and socket, and axels and pins
@skybirdmakes2 күн бұрын
With the exception of the small ball joints in this set, which appear to be a non-lego size, the parts felt very similar to Lego not only in terms of texture, but also connection! Axles, pins, studs, anti studs all felt fantastic. The only parts that showed any variation in quality were the technic connectors used in the weapon, which were sometimes either a bit loose or tight. The ratchet joint in the knee is not made by Lego and is quite stiff, but this is understandable given that they need to hold up the figure

@buckchuckgaming5972 күн бұрын
I still think the biggest reason G2 failed was because it wasn’t gone long enough to be missed. Most Bionicle fans, by 2015, hadn’t reached what I call a quarter life crisis. About the time a person hits 25-30 they usually get nostalgic for things from their childhood and usually get a career with some disposable income. It’s the same with video games. At around the 15-20 year mark you’ll see a big spike in prices because a new generation has grown up and is looking to reconnect with their childhood. If G2 had come out 5-10 years later I think it would have captured a lot of the older fans that skipped G2
@Bionickpunk2 күн бұрын
Yep, if it came out in the 2020s, it would have a better chance.
@KiwiKJКүн бұрын
Completely agree!!! Most people were either in their teens to early twenties, so no one who was a fan had very much disposable income. I was only 15 when it came back out so I barely had a chance of grabbing the sets at all.

Many of the parts were found in parts packs by King Sidorak, which are free and can be found online! I also recommend checking out other modelers and part compilers like Galva (Chronicle's Vault), Rothanak, Vootkaboot and more! You cannot convince me that the 2008 socket design was not a deliberate choice made by Lego to accelerate Bionicle's death.
@PimpShrimpin4204 күн бұрын
why would they want something they believe in to fail? thats just cynical at best dude
@CountEstradivarius74 күн бұрын
@PimpShrimpin420 around 2008 designers got told the line was about to be cancelled. They made prototypes with 3 types of sockets and only the new ones broke. They knew what they were doing. Professional designers don't design something that is clearly an inferior design only for the sake of it.
@skybirdmakesКүн бұрын
I think it's more complicated then this, it can be fun to lean into the pessimism (I often do) but ultimately I think it was the culmination of many factors, those pieces were just the socket ;) that broke the camel's back

You basically said everything that needs to be said about the flawed socket designs, both in original designs and 2008 redesigns. Indeed Lego had better quality plastic in until the 2010s, even Slugger noticed that old bricks had better clutch power, or as you stated older Bionicle pieces lasted longer.

Good video! My takeaway is that it's awesome LEGO is working on improving the designs and strength of their pieces when they could be just using the exact same designs/molds/plastics as twenty or thirty years ago, even if those aren't as strong or durable as they could be.

I never worry about the old style of hand connector breaking. Even when they crack, the crack closer to the base, and still retain plenty of clutch power. Also, I am so glad to see someone bring up the incredibly breakage prone T-connector piece.
@bentoncozzi6125 күн бұрын
I think the reason people tout CCBS sockets as the best, at least my reasoning, is that they are perfectly smooth, and thus don't stand out as much. The openings in the classic sockets do have their benefits for mechanical aesthetics that were far more prevalent in the Mata Nui era, but at least for me this limits their usability. CCBS as a whole has a very sleek aesthetic, so the smoother sockets work much better there. The same goes for implementing sockets into system builds, or implementing system elements into a Bionicle model for that matter. Even some technic parts that get updated, like the 1x2 pin hole connector with the perpendicular 1/2 thickness axle holes, have been made smoother. IMO, if LEGO decides to bring back the OG socket but one way or another flatten out the gaps, that would be the magnum opus of the technic catalog.

I have had 90% of my transparent 1x1 round parts break and the other 10% are cracked. And have had every instance of broken parts that you have talked about in the video and even more. Clips, Bushings, Axleholes, Antistuds, Ball joints, Pins Plates, Sockets, Plant Leafs, and even Axles all break on me at some point in time just using the standard building system of lego. Its quite strange that a lego who prides themselves on qualiy had quite the qualiy issue with parts.

I have. It is really bad with older ones. More than half of mine are completely unusable and snapped. So probably around 30-40 of them, and every single on my Bionicle sets are still cracked, which is probably around 150 of them. It would likely be highly effected by weather, so maybe that's it? Or you just buy newer sets. I'm pretty sure all three factories make the parts for all regions.

So that 50€ dump truck is just a bigger version of the soon to be retired cute 10€ set 42147 from 2023, which on top of accomplishing the same two functions in a more compact package, had a pretty cool B-model of an excavator with two levers for operating its arm. Don't wanna hate on the new one, rather just giving some spotlight to the smaller one, before it's gone. Also, I'm happy for the return of solid yellow Bohrok eyes in the Stingray set, since that means, they'll be available on the online PaB and I need some for my bionicle MOC, that I'm planning to part out eventually.

G2 was fairly rushed. Your observations are correct. Some set designs came from discarded CCBS themes. Lego went full Hollywood with G2 and the budget was a constant chokehold. That's all I can say for now.

Compared to a Chima set, the spider set 70130. It did only have 4 eyes, but overall the set was alright but did have that 2 front leg swing action, plus the kinda web launcher. It was a cool set to me when I was younger. The legs were completely rigid tho, but honestly didnt mind due to the play feature. Honestly if this spider set was made in a way you could build it either two ways, or just play first. It would be a lot cooler. You’d have the “jumping variant” and then the front swinging attack one. Or just rebuilt with masks similar to the old G1 sets to knock off. Either on hits head as armor, its abdomen, or something. If made today I feel like it would do a lot better to make the play feature a lot more smooth and easier to do. But honestly if it would be neat to fill the world with more 2 in one or like the really old set that was like a 5 in one if i remember

Now, I have 29 total Bionicle sets (mostly modified).
