My native language is Turkish. Therefore, this language group is far from us. However, while listening to it, Irish reminded me a little of the northern languages and Dutch. I wonder if the historical viking invasions from the north had an impact on Ireland?

Our language is beautiful - there’s a distinct musicality and personality to it. I speak Russian and Arabic, and there are many sounds in Irish that don’t exist in English. This helped me develop my pronunciation. An example would be the expression in Irish: ar nós na gaoithe (at the speed of the wind). The word gaoithe (wind) contains the Russian letter ы which trips up English native speakers. The Irish spoken by the gent in the video is a balm to the soul. It makes me proud to hear him speak Irish so naturally and with such pleasure. Great conversation. 🇮🇪❤💪

It’s kinda embarrassing how so few seem to speak their native language. And the ones who claimed they knew little was literally fluent, of course as they were older gentlemen. I understand it’s easy to take a language for granted, but being indigenous and my people where colonized for 500+ years by Spain, Britain, USA and invaded by Japan during WW2,, which literally destroyed our own sense of self and alot of our major traditions and cultural practices that also reflected our identify, I know how important it is to have pride in ones culture, heritage and ancestry as well as history. Language is such a huge part of one’s identity and connection to a country, and people, and once lost, it’s pretty darn hard to get it back. And when it’s lost, that’s when people realize how precious it was. So much knowledge in a language. Sad. My bf is Icelandic and 24% part Irish/Scottish (Celtic). I really love the sounds of the Irish Gaelge and Scottish Gaelic. Beautiful language. I love the tradition of Sean-nós, from Connemara especially: sibling duo Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta from An Áird Mhóir, Carna.

I don’t understand Irish but it seems to me that is as difficult as Turkish in the sense that I can’t pick a single word in order to repeat. The pronunciation is indiscernible 😅

Do Irish folk ever have people tell them Irish is just a dialect of English, the way we get told Ukrainian is a dialect of Russian? I love seeing old languages having a resurgence lately, and I hope more young people pick it up through social media ❤ thanks for sharing this lovely conversation!

No, because Irish isn't related to English. The two languages are from separate language families. A better comparison for the Irish language would be to Scots Gaelic and Manx. All three languages are from the Goidelic branch of the Celtic language family. This is similar to Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian being part of the East Slavic branch of the Slavic language family. I can speak Irish and I can understand some Scots Gaelic and some Manx. In a similar manner, I can also speak Russian and I can understand some Ukrainian and some Belarusian.

Great language the Irish Myself, I am fluent in Welsh language my mother tongue but have emigrated to North America where it will die out with my wife and me; as my kids haven’t been able to speak it because unlike the Spanish speaking children don’t have other Welsh children to speak with. When i visited my old home town in West Wales i noticed the kids on the street didn’t speak the old language as i and my friends did in the 70s When i asked them why , response was “It’s not cool” Also the massive influx of English people moving to the region buying property up property and houses at prices the natives can’t afford These people are vehemently opposed to their children learning Welsh in the schools pointing out that it’s an unnecessary dead and unproductive language that just needs to die a natural death

isn't Muhammad the number one baby name in Galway, I think I seen a video on that, how wonderful that Ireland has become so diverse and not just full of Irish
@CiaraNíShúilleabháin1990
@CiaraNíShúilleabháin1990 2 күн бұрын
Muhammad was the most popular name given to boys born in Galway City in 2022. This doesn't necessarily imply a particularly large Muslim population however. In 2022, only 2% of the population of the entire country were Muslim and there were only 72 babies born in the entire country who were named Muhammad. The most likely conclusion that could be drawn from the available data would be that there is much less variety in the choice of names used by Muslims compared to non-Muslims. This conclusion is backed up by statistical data of name choices amongst Muslims globally. Since Muslims are a lot more likely to choose the name Muhammad and non-Muslims choose from a much wider range of names, this leads to Muhammad being chosen as a name a lot more often than other names. Muhammad is the most popular name in the entire world for this very reason.

I can relate. My dad ysed to buy treats for us in the corner shop and leave them behind the counter for us. We werent allowed to see him either, so he used to come and watch us without knowing and leave him gifts. He died of a massive heart attack, and now the village we love in have a defibrillator in his name. No phone box im afraid.

Imagine every group of humans got a unit in a shared apartment building. Culture is the curtain pattern local circumstances forced your Grandma to hang in the windows. Sure, it makes each unit look unique from the outside but the people really aren't and the building should matter far more than ensuring we all keep choosing the same pattern Grandma had to pick despite having access to every pattern and fabric known to our species. Rebranding tribalism doesn't make it less regressive.

There are several Irish-speaking dialects - mainly Munster Irish (which this lovely gentlman is speaking); Galway/Connaught Irish (lady speaking); and Donegal Irish (Ulster province). My family also live in Ballyvourney, County Cork (Baile Mhuirne, Co. Chorcaí) - where this gentleman is from - which is in the Munster Gaeltacht (Gaeltacht Mhuscraí). The schools in the gaeltacht areas teach ALL subjects through 'Irish' and locals speak 'Irish'. I naturally LOVE the sound of 'Munster Irish' as it is 'soft and flowing and easier to understand' (imo) and it used to be the 'national dialect' in books, on tv/radio, etc. But now 'Connaught Irish' is the 'national dialect' which I find 'harsher, sharper and more gutteral' with Ulster Irish more so again. Sorry, I'm not starting an Irish Dialect war here. As I said, I'm from the Munster Gaeltacht, so of course I'm biased 😂

1.The Iris language (called 'Irish' when you're speaking/writing in English. And called 'Gaeilge' when you're speaking/writing in Irish) is taught in every school in Republic of Ireland (Éire). So children learn to speak, read and write Irish from approx. ages 4 to age 18/19 years.

Good luck keeping your beautiful language alive. I’m afraid of the future of my own Icelandic language, the increasing use of English especially by younger people and just kids is worrying. I think it’s up to us all who speak the language. Try and make kids read books like my generation did and all the generation before us. I read somewhere that we have taken 46 words from Gaelic! Kjalarnes, Kjölur (means a fell that looks líka a boat upside down) Beinageit !

Eeee what a fab café! My great-great grandfather, Launcelot, was the last person to speak Irish in my family. My granddad left Nenagh when the British ****s threw a grenade through the neighbour's window. Then he went to live in.....England :( which was a shame. I personally would have stayed and fought, I think...but I don't truly know as I wasn't there at the time, and he was only 19. I love how beautiful and green Ireland is, however Dublin has a weird vibe to it. It didn't want to see ****ing Boots chemist, I wanted to see O'Hagan's potigéir (or however you spell it.... got the fada wrong)... I wish I could turn the clock back and rewrite history and make the British treat the lovely people of Ireland with the respect they deserve. That road Bothar na Hotharloinne near the Pairc an fionnuisce has a super weird feel to it! I walked up and down it trying to work out why it felt that way. It feels almost like it's frozen in time and nothing is able to thrive there.
