A great video....that you for sharing....this Kolb plane is rare here in Europe...never seen one .......actually it is not a mechanical fuel pump...it is a pneumatic pump...as you explain...it is a standard component from Mikuni...but ist ist not properly mounted...see Rotax installation manuals. ...They are delictade to check...and not very strong regarding suction rate....an additional electric boost pump...properly installed with check valves is something that can overcome the Mikuni pump in case of loss of suction performance....and...as in all low wing planes...ist should be on during take-off....

Being a bloke from the UK, the stuff you guys in the US are aloud to do when it comes to aviation is amazing. British Sky's are so full of rules of regulations that you can't fly a drone without getting arrested. It's nice to see you made a safe ditch either way. Any landing you walk away from is a good one, as my microlight instructor said.

I wonder if you can have a little arduino chip monitoring the pumps, and then let the arduino activate the correct pump.

You have no primer bulb. You have to use one if your tank is lower than your carb and your using a diaphragm pump. Give it a couple squeeze's until it gets hard before starting the engine. I used to do it in my walk around. It's the same for an outboard boat motor. What happened to you is something I've seen many times with boats and snowmobiles, and my CGS Hawk. Always pump the bulb before you pull the rope. I forgot so many times with my outboard, that I got good at grabbing it, and squeezing it, before the motor cut out completely.

other possibility engine lost power or down, due to restriction or saturated of fuel filter, i see very small fuel fitter, i have this experience, engine down many time then replace with the big one for automotive and success..

What a pleasure to watch, by saying that i mean you used zero curse words and showed no anger. Most video crash survival landings, the pilot gets out pissed, but i would be like you.. I'm ok guys i'm ok and probably kiss the dirt that corns grown in. Great job landing Sir!!

this is why you should always use an electrical pump

Gosh, the red flag should've gone up when your engine didn't run well with the electric pump on during take-off. I would say the electric pump was too strong for your engine's requirements of fuel, plus the diaphragm pump. The extra fuel pressure was overpowering your carb needle/seat, and dumping all king of unnecessary fuel into your engine. All you needed was to replace your electric pump with one of a 2-4 psi pumping pressure VS one that was pumping too much pressure. Sorry for your crash. I flew a Firestar ll for many years with the 503 and loved it. I always install a diaphragm kit in the pump annually.

Seems odd for it to just start leaking. Sure one of your "buddies" didnt mess with your bird? Definitely want dual pumps on takeoff, if runs rough, then you need a mechanic to get it sorted running smooth on dual pumps.

The cage and harness saved you. These ultralights are much safer than trike and kite type flying machines. Your incident was not caused by you but by mechanical failure. To me ultralights are safer than other types of flyers. I would pick an ultralight any day.

Glad you are ok, you did everything perfect. If the engine gets flooded when you use the electric pump, there is something wrong the float needle valve/ seat or the pump pressure is too high.It should be able to stop about 5 psi of fuel pressure. Can you slap a gauge on it and let us know how much pressure you have. I'd fix that and the incorrect pulse pump orientation and run the electric pump anytime I'm below 200' AGL.

My father and I own a 1969 arrow and our mechanical fuel pump failed on a climb out at takeoff but we did not notice it until we turn the electric fuel pump off. Every time we turn the electric fuel pump off the engine would stutter. I don't know if you have a checklist when you do your run up before takeoff or Landing maybe you should add keeping the electric fuel pump on during takeoffs and Landings.. Glad you're okay💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

You're uninjured, which is fantastic. I've never tried it, but I was told that the best way to crash in corn was to pretend the tops are the ground, flare, then as you "touch down", stall it the rest of the way because (1) a hard drop isn't bad and (2) if you land through the crops, they grab your wheels and you'll plant the nose into the ground at high speed.

I'm really sorry to hear, man. I'm pretty sure it was you I visited with briefly at Oshkosh. I had a forced landing in my Firefly last year. My fuselage has some bowed tubes on the right side, though not nearly as bad as yours. I feel that mine is repairable, but I also had wingtip damage on one wing, so that means one new rib, a tip bow, and the worst part, recovering and painting a wing and the fuselage. Mine also has broken rudder pedal mounts and a crushed nose cone. Like you, I am not sure what to do with it. I have other airplanes to fly, but I sure loved the Firefly. Good luck to you, and enjoy your Kitfox whatever happens. All the best to you.

Great minds ... I fly a paramotor and also have an additional electric pump installed just like yours, except when I went to Aircraft Spruce, I chose the one with the lowest pressure. Mine are commected in series, both always operating, and I have no problem with flooding. That might be because of rhe low pressure or also because I use a membrane carburetor which may have a higher spring pressure closing the valve. I really like the idea (posted above) of routing the fuel line to above the carburetor, adding a return line and then the carburetor sees just a gravity feed. When I assembled my system, I assumed that the electric pump may fail, so I added mechanical valves I could switch to bypass the electrical pump, but if rhe membrane fails, I'm landing. I have yet to see any other footlaunch paramotor pilot flying with an electric fuel pump. Probably 30-40 hours on that setup, no issues with it so far. Be safe!

There are folks who have had that very thing happen in a corn field and have ended up dead. Thankfully, it wasn't your time, but in the end, we will all die. This video is a sobering reminder that we aren't in control really and it's only the grace of God that gives us another day. God has saved me many times from dying, literal miracles and I have heard true stories from folks that died and experienced heaven and some hell on the other side. Some of them were resuscitated and some were brought back by a miracle. Dean Braxton actually has his papers from the hospital where he had been dead for an 1hr and 45 minutes roughly. Dean shares about heaven and seeing Jesus. I'm thankful to God that you are good, have a good day man.

I would put a small ( 1.5 quarts) header tank up at engine level. Electric pump plumbed to it, an outlet line teeing into the line above the pulse type pump and a return line from the top of the header tank back to the fuel tank to relieve any pressure build up. That way you would have a gravity fed carburetor. You are obviously a motorcycle guy ( so am I) so do you think this would work and be safer? BTW, I built a Kitfox Lite and a model 2 back in the 1990s. But they weren't mine.
