A lovely outing to watch, Rua looks full of beans! A question, I was rewatching your excellent New Year's winter camp video from the start of the year and as an aspiring winter camper I was wondering what is your approach for dealing with the snow beneath the spot you pitch the tent, do you dig it out first or just go on top?

Hi 👋🏼, it’s a decent tent. Certainly not the best but it’s pretty solid. I’d definitely add extra guys for winter use. Or spend the extra on a Hilleberg…

@OutdoorIntrigueАй бұрын
Hi 👋🏼, yeah a 100g canister fits and the Soto windmaster fits on top which is really handy. Performance is good but you can tell it’s not a perfect fit sometimes. For 20 quid it’s very good though.

If your sock is wet then there is something wrong with your gear or preparation, I use gortex leather boots and gaiters, also Marino socks and carry a spare’s set. The German made boots I use the tung and boot are one piece of leather which is hydrophobic treated plus a wax then the gortex and finally a soft leather to keep your feet comfortable. I also use boots cooling gel which keeps your foot comfortable , I also have electric heated socks which are fantastic.
@OutdoorIntrigueАй бұрын
@MsDenver2 Wet socks can and do occur irrespective of even the best laid plans unfortunately. So it’s good to try and prevent it happening but also know how to manage it if it happens. Heated socks are indeed great, but do tend to be expensive. No matter your boot sometimes water 💦 will get in.
@MsDenver2Ай бұрын
@ yes that’s true you can still get wet socks even if you prepare well but I think when you do get wet feet I try and learn from it and do better next time , I been looking at new gaiters recently which are waterproof but there is always that place where they join the boot , some are better than others but still water will find away if it can . I have found these silicone shoe covers which started me thinking. Obviously they are no good over boots they would split in two minutes but may be a silicon seal over the top of the boots, this needs work ? Good chatting with you, what a subject wet feet lol👍

I'm having my own..very disappointing post-sale customer experience with TN right now. I have a Southern Cross 2, and 3 of the 4 attachment points for the inner to the outer have failed...or a 75% failure rate. You mentioned this issue as part of your usage of the tent. The failure is IMO due to a design flaw, or poor material choice, or poor finishing, or poor QA...or all of the above (it's not a load bearing or high tension connection). TN however think it's...guess what...user error and are expecting me to pay for the repairs. I've been camping, and wild camping for >40 years...and whilst you never stop learning, I do know how to pitch a tent. It's unfortunate TNs post-sale experience, doesn't match their pre-sale...but that can be said for a lot of manufacturers and re-sellers. I' ain't given up yet on this.

Really appreciate your video and insights into the Allak2. We are about to take our brand new Allak3 for its virgin exposed high wild camp this weekend (with 10mm poles). Interested to see how a side door dome performs. We got the Allak3 primarily for bike packing using relatively sheltered sites, but going to give it a harder test in the mountains first. Our other Hilleberg tents (Nammatj3, Jannu and Tarra) have very obvious pitching orientations. Did you find there is a stronger pitching orientation relative to wind for the Allak2? Looks to me like the Hilleberg label and where the doors open from is the head end better skewed into wind?
