I think that, as you said, they should change the amount of points increased depending on the Pokémon that receives the mega. It could go from 50 to 150 points, making the offensive Pokémon more preferable to have equiped the life orb but bulkier and the defensive ones more offensive. In terms of lore it could be justified by saying that the ones that get a small increase were already powerful but the ones with a bigger amount had a lot of unexploited potential.

People were so scared of it and they prepared so much that it didn't even top cut the first reg g regional.

I know from experience Giratina is the single worst Legendary Pokemon at competitive, I have used it time and time again and either won by skill (gen 4), lost occasionally (gen 6) or fell flat into Urshifu and Calyrex (gen 8). My proposal is give Giratina fused forms with Dialga and Palkia, but then give it an Ultra form like Necrozma as well.
