Had a pal VFO and a Robyn 123b ... Great AM setup.. Love the PAL gear. Great video Doc!

You can greatly lower the drift of a Siltronix VFO by keeping the temperature stable. Adding a "heater" inside one can be as simple as adding a high wattage wire wound resistor connected to 120VAC or as complicated as a temperature regulating circuit using a large transistor and heatsink used as a heater. The key is consistent non changing temperature. Even the PAL VFO's can be made more stable by adding a crystal heater to keep the crystal temperature stable.

Thats not a common price for them. Mine and most I have seen are around $2k but For one that pretty I have seen them for 10k but that's the exception not the rule fortunately . It is my favorite Johnson by far.

I just picked up a nice Transel Nitro 300. I have a Beautiful Browning Mark III with the 776 orange stripe. Love all your videos! Super educational. Have you ever considered writing a book to share your knowledge and experience?? I have purchased dozens of electronics and a few CB books but none cover linear amplifiers like they should. I have a General Ham License and always a thirst for knowledge!! I bet you could sell a ton all while helping out your community on here. Just a thought. Hope you consider it. Spiral bound handwritten anything…. Thanks for all you do!! Great channel!!

Are your diode bridge rectifiers drawn correctly in the schematics, the High Voltage one sure isn't ! The negative Bias circuit seems ok .... I see weird things drawn in the Grid circuit.

That 9 times out of 10 is the keying circuit going bad, not the relay. I replace the keying circuit with the Nomad keying circuit.

Thanks for the tip! I'm new to putting connectors on coax and now realize I definitely put too much solder on the connectors of first length of coax I attached connectors to, some RG-8X fed through the basement window going to my antenna outside. I'm going to file it down and check for damage now.

If you still need photos of the inside, I have one, but in silver. I am the 2nd owner, got it with 10 spare new tubes. Used it in the 90's and has been boxed up since. I'm getting back into radio and plan to get it back in line. Your videos have been helpful in getting my Black Cat and 300A back in top condition. Keep the videos coming...

@@tramdr someone replaced the band switch with a large Johnson rotary inductor in mine.. looks like I'm going to take that out and just mono band it for 10/11 I'll send you an email with pics maybe you have an idea. Appreciate your videos, I always learn a thing while watching.

I like your videos you're very thorough and easy to listen to.I've got a big tube linear and I need somebody that knows like you to maybe work on it for me I don't think it's a big deal major problem when I turn it on all the tubes light but it won't key up.Thanks
@tramdr18 күн бұрын
Sorry, I'm old and can't see anymore, hence I don't work on others. If it has an automatic keying circuit and it is not keying the keying circuit, I would just replace the keying circuit with the Nomad keying circuit.

Thank you again for such a great and informative video! I have an sb200 with a smoked band switch which I am considering mono banding. I also am contemplating switching the bands (tank circuit side) with relays. Do you have any thoughts on the relay idea? I have temporarily bypassed the faulty band on it which does work for now....but ..you know lol

I use a "kill a watt" meter in line with a variac....it tells the story very well.....light bulbs in series with the line voltage works ok too if you don't have a variac.

This brings back lots of memories. I have always had an interest in radio. Back in 69 when I was 10 a neighbor who was big in CB loaned me a Lafyette 6 channel CB radio. For Christmas I got a Radio Shack 1/4 wave antenna to go with it. I have long since moved to Ham Radio but, my roots was CB. I still have a number of radios from the 70's. I do listen to CB frequencies from time to time. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your electronic knowledge. Gary

I was buying some caps off digikey to do a cobra 2000 and I noticed almost all the thru hole capacitors say discontinued. like after the stock is sold, there will be no more. which makes sense because everything is gone smd but thats a shocker to me. Also Illinois capacitor company was nowhere to be found on there so thats odd
