This video is a collab with my new editor! It’s the first main voice video I didn’t edit and I’m hoping it will allow for this channel to publish a lot more content! This video was made out of clips from a past live stream and clips from a group class lecture that clover and I do every 3 months.

@@TransVoiceLessons I'm actually curious if there's a way to achieve that kind of voice (albeit a little less exaggerated) as a transfem person, It's like a sort of tomboyish masc voice that just ends up sounding, well, cismasc masc, when I do it, while the intent is to sound cisfem masc for lack of better terms.

OMG It just clicked. FINALLY, I was stuck for weeks not being able to raise my R1 anymore, FINALLY found the muscles to be able raise my R1 out of that androgyny zone and into feminine zone. Wow that took way too long lol. Why was that so hard? Now I'm finally able to get my weight and resonance into the right place for that feminine sound, I was just stuck for so long.

It's a very interesting observation that the perception of fullness or feminine voices in general vary from culture to culture. I'm from sweden and sometimes when I practice with these videos I try to say your english example words but then I immediately want to test how it sounds in swedish. I notice how I'm slightly regulating and modifying so that it sounds feminine in a swedish way and it works amazing and I'm glad I can apply your exercises to my mother-tounge as well. You guys mean a lot for the trans community, not only in the english speaking world.🙏❤🇸🇪

Hi!!!! I'm actually trying to learn Swedish right now and I can certainly relate to this so much, haha! I want to sound as passing as possible in all the languages that I could/am learning to speak so I actually practise 4 times. I still haven't grasped the nuances in Swedish pronunciation between males and females yet, apart from the fact that females tend to be more sing-song-y aka using the pitch accent more "exaggeratedly" with their speech compared to those who are male. That's probably because I just started learning about a week ago lol but I do hope that once I speak to a Swede, I'll sound like a cisgender female :D

I just want to say, some of the points covered in this video helped connect some of the few remaining dots that I had. I already have a "passing" voice courtesy of the tips and tricks picked up over the past couple of years watching your content, but I have been trying to improve the different facets of my voice separately instead of unifying everything that I have learned up to this point. That graph/chart really helped. :)

This was a really interesting video. Zhea alone is amazing, but having the additional perspective from Clover while exploring fullness really adds a whole new layer. THIS. is what i needed!! i had the resonance down but i couldnt figure out for the life of me why when "i tried" my voice sounded less passable . it was because i would make it SUPER brassy and heavy with a rlly high resonance. Now that I understand that I can get to the ideal voice through starting at "yawn" "aw" - hollow sound with dark resonance. then increasing my R1/R2 to a brighter resonance while maintaining my light weight. OMG GAME CHANGER there were moments before where I achieved this voice but i couldnt figure out how I got there and how to maintain it UNTIL NOW!!!! U are a god

I'm blown away by this video! I'm definitely one of those trans women who have a naturally hollow sounding voice, but always end up sounding buzzy when they attempt voice feminization, and it's so frustrating. This also seems like an excellent way to identify where your voice is and where you want to bring it, by just playing around and trying to make different shapes on the graph, you can figure out where your 'normal' is approximately, and also what positions start to sound closer to what you want. I've been stuck for a while because my ideal voice is sort of 'butch' or 'tomboyish', and I haven't been sure how to get to that voice or even where my voice is now, I think this will help me to figure those out.

Holy sweet jesus Coming to this video I can really see my progress just from your absolute beginner video, maybe it was me being a choir kid before so I understood what to do easier but after finding that comfortable weight I naturally ended up raising my resonance. Its only been a few days but I already sound so much more feminine when i try, so I guess the rest is just continuous practive and use until my vocal folds tighten to match my frequent use of this voice so it no longer becomes a conscious decision :D

I'm super frustrated that my discovery of your channel had to happen this past weekend, of all times - I've been stuck dealing with COVID since Sunday!! >.< Some days I feel masculine, or feminine, or some place in-between - and it's always bugged me that I could never manage to bring my voice along for the ride!!! I don't really talk to a lot of people online or IRL because I just lack a lot of confidence in that ability to really fully embody myself... Seeing you break things down into these different attributes really gives me hope that with practise, I could someday be able to match my inner self on any given day. I'm no longer stuck thinking like "Oh, this is just how my voice is - I just need to accept an awkward headvoice or some sort of weird scratchy chestvoice" as I had been before. This video and the others really opened my eyes to the possibilities, and I really, really thank you for that!!!

Absolutely! Currently the most concentrated way to get exposure to the biggest parts of the method/model is through the 12-week group courses. Clover and I are working on a book and website for the method and model though which will make it a lot more accessible in one place. On this channel there is a video, "overview of voice feminization" this was a much older version of the model. I don't really love that video anymore but it can give a nice overview of general core ideas. A lot of the language, structure, and philosophy has changed in the model since then though. Also I guess this is as good a place to ask this, what do I do if I can't raise my resonance? I've tried whisper sirens and little dog but neither raise my larynx any and when I transition into an "aaa" sound it's just higher in pitch, so probably not higher in resonance since resonance is supposed to be seperate from pitch. I literally don't know what I'm doing wrong if anything. But I can drop my larynx super low which is... discouraging and depressing. That I can drop it but can't raise it.

Ask me that question on a livestream. I don't think its very useful to talk about vocal problems in text. I'd be glad to spend a significant portion of a live stream discussing this issue. There is a video on my patreon about separating pitch from resonance if you think that's your main issue but your challenge sounds more fundamental than that. 9:20 I'm kind of disappointed how the "Solving the Plateauing mistake" section is just showing how to do it and saying "See? It's so easy!" Are you not considering that people aren't trying to plateau by not decreasing size more but rather can't manage to decrease size more even though they know that's what they should be doing at this point? I don't think it's a problem of misunderstanding the target but rather an inability to get there in most cases.
@TransVoiceLessons
@TransVoiceLessons 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to disappoint! This video was made from multiple discussions stitched together to create a public resource for individuals to understand *fullness*. It is essentially a "twitch highlight" type video but for voice. This video was not intended to help people break their resonance plateaus. I have talked for hours in workshops, patreon videos, livestreams, published document material, and some youtube videos on this channel about size with much emphasis on plateaus and various ways to break them. There is ~1.5 hours of size files on the size document. There is much discussion about towards "breaking plateaus" on the server and a simple search can unearth dozens of posts on the topic. I believe Clover even has a document they made last year codifying "wallbreaking" exercises we like for resonance. The focus of this video is understanding fullness. I'm planning on making smaller digestible videos on each element soon but those are going to be made by me so they take longer. This video was never intended to be a be-all end-all video. It's just stream and lecture highlights.

Hi Zhea, Thank you for the video, it was highly informative. Would you ever release an app or a vocal programme (where you can download and train in your own time) for vocal feminisation ?

What about an N Zhea, up from hollow down to Full Masculine and up to full? It sort of works, I tried it with comical effect. Petra-B

Im internally stuck at my feminine voice being hollow, like I have the pitch down but I just sound so breathy and hallow. When I see you and Clover go from hallow to full fem I try to do it but I can’t the only thing that seems to change is the pitch but I don’t think I need to raise the pitch anymore I don’t know how you guys get that resonance where it just sounds well. Female I’m having a really hard time getting there I think I’m gonna have to get vocal training because the only way I could see myself improving is if someone tells me and hears me speaking One on one

This might be a bit long, do not take it as the word, I'm just trying to point a direction. (Around everything I mention there are lots of tweaks and corrections to look for during that can be made/added but it would make it more complicated.) To go up from Hollow the way they are is literally just about Size (= Resonance = "Oral" AND "Throat" Size/Space) needing to be smaller. If you do have Pitching ability down, then put it aside and work on understanding what they are showing. Also one of the things this demo is showing is that resonance is waaaaaay more powerful then pitch. (Their brightness is going up because they are making their space smaller and smaller (With Oral and Throat space, etc) not because of pitch. You can use (or even ride) the shape a vowel gives your oral size/space to help yourself understand the kind of changes that are being made in the Oral and Throat space. Kinda like a snapshot/peak.. A basic yet optimized way to do this is with "E" (as in E"a"t or Ch"ee"se). When doing this the focus is not on the sound itself, its on making yourself aware of the "spacial" changes (what parts are moving, where they are) being made in your oral space while doing it. And an awareness of the overall shape/posture it makes in your mouth. So first you can just do E back to back letting everything go back to whatever your normal relaxed position is each time. When going back to E each time use it as an opportunity to focus on / get a feel for whats changing, moving. Things are overall moving into a smaller space, by taking/using up more of your space when doing this. E is essentially putting things in a semi ideal mouth shape/space (size) where you can target not just the shape itself but the parts involved in it. (Tongue position; Back,Mid, Front and or its shape), The soft palate might come down a lil, your Larynx might rise a lil. Now you can further optimize this by adding K sound (> again the space/shape it puts you in.) First just instead of E do K. See/feel the changes between K and E they are in very similar position but your tongue will be a lil more forward in the mid and tip and a lil more full in the back then the E gave, its easier to engage or feel the Soft palate movement here. Now simply change it all into saying "Key" instead. This will help you optimize the positions you were looking to identify in E a lil better. By literally combing the E and K shape together. Try to take the minor changes during K and apply them to the E shape from before. (Key like E will automatically do this for you, so was just saying to still be mindful of the difference) From Key you can actually take it much further and better and involve more things but I was just trying to point you in the right direction. From here you should go back to E and do E,E,E,E or EEEEE till you get more comfortable to how/where you feel with that oral space. I know people hate the head voice thing now, but for me doing this alone makes my voice FEEL as if (there really isn't a word to describe) but the presence feels higher where the back and mid tongue are. I wont take that any further because it might cause confusion. You are essentially using the space/SHAPE/changes the E give you as your new speaking position. You can go back to Key if you want since its more optimal then E but might be a lil harder to start speaking from at first, but the given space by key is smaller then E. I do not know how to physically describe it but kind of how like you would match your pitch to a sound, this is more physical, you want to maintain the E/KEY "shape" and just start talking while in it. You need to let go of the idea of the sound it gives at this point and speak with the space/shape (= size) it gives you. Sorry if redundant. Now also keep in mind here we have not really done much with your Throat space.. you essentially need to make similar changes in your Pharynx/Pharyngeal areas, Larynx etc. So you will not gain the full picture without it but this should be enough to start pushing out of the hallow. When you get more comfortable you can with E/Key try fooling with your Tongue position that it gives you to try to lift your Larynx (you are just trying to barley move it to make that brain connection/awareness.) This will help give your Larynx a lil more lift during the E/Key if it doesn't automatically. From here just like that you just keep adding lil things like the previous tweak (considering you also started doing the throat space too.) What I highly recommend is looking at this guide: www.reddit.com/r/transvoice/comments/wpffaw/an_introduction_to_voice_feminization_for/ They use the more current terminology that Z and Clover are using and their new simplified version of trying to brake things down. This will lead you to most you need to know. (and Z's other relevant vids.) It lets you know on the links if some of the language is different because older videos in reference to the new terminologies etc.

So I've heard that singing along with voices that are closer to what you want to achieve is a good way to practice. Something about focusing on the singing aspect makes it easier for your voice to fall in line without thinking too much. Is there any truth to that?
@TransVoiceLessons
@TransVoiceLessons 2 жыл бұрын
I've answered this a few times in livestreams. To be brief, I think doing any exploratory vocal activity is ultimately helpful for vocal development. If you are using your voice a lot/creatively/exploratorily, you will naturally expand your capability. I don't think singing in particular is the most optimal way to work towards feminization but it works for some! The fundamental act of voice is trying to create something you intend to create. Singing along with voices you like gives you a clear target to intend to create. As you work towards creating this, you aren't just developing for vocal control but also developing your ability to actualize intention. Intention is key! So I think there are benefits to that but I don't think they are necessarily singing specific -- just vocal specific! :)

Have you did a video on weight? Having a bit of a hard time understanding it. Plus if you can, in the future could you maybe add in more clear examples? Because I was hoping on that whole graph to see weight itself go from heavy to light but I don't think you did that (I even watched the stream itself)

I have a somewhat older video on weight called, "vocal fold mass" which is fine but not my favorite. I also discuss it quite significantly in the video, "Voice Feminization for Absolute Beginners" I'd recommend watching that for a brush up on weight. I'm currently working on a series which is like, "everything you need to know about X" which will be a simple and up to date video series on key elements. I haven't done "the weight" video I want to do yet but there is a lot of resources on here for it. There is also an 8 page document on the patreon which has like 45 mins of audio files included.

I'm even more confused now. None of what you demonstrated sounded like my buzziness problem. I feel like I'm in the center of the graph which you kind of leapt over in your demonstrations. I guess my voice sounds more like Clover's actual voice which wasn't really mapped.
