Thanks for your time and your video. You provided a lot of information to help the home builder 👍🏻. I helped my Dad around 37 years ago add a Master Bedroom and Bathroom to their house and it taught me a lot. Your Video reminded me of that since I’m getting the urge to work on our home. Thank you very much

Stumbled across your content as i research if its worth it for me to build my own 20x24 garage in the back yard. More of a Me lounge with garage size, but i cant find anyone out here in western South Dakota that will touch this type of work anymore or the ones that are here are so expensive its insane. Everyone in the trades out here are busy with home builds for the upcoming growth that's expected. Prefab shed or stick built garage i just keep flip flopping and the cost of concrete is also through the roof. Do you ever go over a cost breakdown of your projects? Id be interested to see what it typically costs in other parts of the country. Regardless great work and i look forward to following along.
@MyDIYAdventures14 сағат бұрын
I haven’t done any cost breakdowns on these builds because I’m usually framing these for a contractor. If I get a chance to do a video on one of my own jobs, I’ll definitely go over the cost then!

I am a fan of angle bracing the frame. Your thoughts?

Not necessary when sheathing the walls with OSB or plywood, but it’s not like it would hurt to do it.

thanks for making these videos...i'm about half way through all your builds and i'm thinking of pulling the trigger on doing a self build garage. i am undecided whether to go the metal building (versatube or similar) route or stick. i'm sure this varies based on location (i'm in houston, tx) but do you have a idea on your marterial costs per square foot for a build like this one to get it to this point (no shingles or siding)? not including concrete because i think you mentioned where you're at it required 36" footers which seems to drive up the cost alot from numbers i've heard you and others throw out. thanks again, keep it up and stay safe
@MyDIYAdventures4 күн бұрын
It's hard to say, there's a ton of variables, but maybe $8-$12 grand

@@MyDIYAdventures Thanks, what would a fair price be to pay to have someone frame it out? I'm having the slab poured next week, seems like I can save a good bit of money if I act as the project manager instead of getting a general contractor to do it all for me.

@sgm6102 that really all depends on what part of the country you’re in, but just framing I would think you could find for $5/ft maybe even less🤷♂️

Just curious - planning my 30x40 garage build. How deep is the footing, and is a stem wall recommended?
@MyDIYAdventures5 күн бұрын
That all depends on your location, footers need to be 36” deep here, and I think stem walls are usually only needed in earthquake zones.

Hi There I have been watching your video for a while really like them ! In this video I didn't see you plumb the walls I did see you show the level and walk around the build with it but I'm confused . How did you get top of the wall straight (top plate) I can't remember in all your video if you show how to plumb and straight walls if you have can you drop a link. Also when you layout for 16 OC do you layout by doing 16 OC then subtract 3/4 of inch meaning 15 1/4 our just do 16OC mark for stud our rafter . I'm also confused about that I see other just go to 16OC with out doing the 3/4 of inch subtract what do you do if I'm make any sense with that . I'm going to build my own garage and I'm looking for all the information I can get . Now I'm going to my kitchen and cook my thanksgiving dinner who I'm kidding I'm going to my sister house watch her cook and drink a couple beers and watch the games 😃

I kinda showed it in this video…I eye the eve walls to straighten them, and plumb down from the ridge on the gable walls. Yeah, I lay out at 15 1/4. And finally…enjoy your beers, and go Lions!

I did something similar . 22x 24 seemed like an optional size next to my house . I kept track of my hours to completion . Form . slab , frame , window and door install , roofing and vinyl siding .. Took 48 man hours and cost $4500.00 complete .. Had I had " Help " it would have taken me 3 times as long .. I am a carpenter by trade and generally built the whoppers with a 10 man crew . There is an optimal crew size for every project . I don't know what you charge or charged . These little garages sold like hotcakes for $25,000 with $5,000 in material back 15 years ago .Made a knot on weekends . Unfortunately I had to hang up my tool belt because of cancer . I used to wonder to myself .. Why do I build these gargantuan lake homes in gated communities when I can build an easy little garage . I think I liked to frustrate myself . Peace
@MyDIYAdventures6 күн бұрын
We used to run with a 3 man crew, myself, another carpenter, and a helper. That was pretty optimal for any size garage and small additions. If we had a huge addition to do, we had our siding crew help us, which was 2 more guys. Since I’ve been working alone for the last several years, I’ve come to enjoy the small 4 day builds…keep it simple👍

Based off of where you're located, which I don't know, I will be demoing my existing 1.5 car garage and getting a 2.5 car garage built with a workshop addition to it. I don't know when I will (exactly be able to) initiate my plan, because there is concrete work, solid poured retaining wall construction that I need to contract out first, but brother, you do amazing work. I have the electrical work all taken care of, because that is what I do. I appreciate what you did with this garage (ON YOUR OWN)! That is how I get down, so I appreciate your skill tremendously.

You do awesome work and are definitely extremely inspiring! Quick question for you: If you were going to build a 30x40 garage yourself, what length would you go with for your plates and how many sections would you do per wall to stand everything up? Would you just use all 10ft. plates or would you do it another way?

First off , love the work you doing. I have a question because I'm thinking about building my own garage. How do you mark for bolts in the cement. Using 2x4 or 2x6
@MyDIYAdventures6 күн бұрын
I just lay the plates down next to the bolts and transfer measurements…you can always do it the old fashioned way and just line your plates up on top of the bolts and whack em with a hammer to mark their spots.
@2nickles6476 күн бұрын
Three options. 1. Take your set of plans with you when the foundations is poured. Your plans will indicate where the bolts will be set. Following the plans, set the bolts into the foundation. 2. Lay the plates down, next to the bolts and transfer them. 3. Stand up the walls and drill for the bolts and set them, if code allows.
