I don't swab between shot. 20-30 shots use mr flintlock patch lube but many other lubes will work. Swabbing between shots you pushing the fouling into the breach where it's going to cause problems. Not swabbing you push the fouling on top of the powder where it will be blow out the barrel.

I presoak a ziplock bag with a mixture of windex murphy soap and water. Just run the wet patch and then back it up with a dry, flip it and run it again. I have a break barrel inline. That mixture works great. Makes my barrel look brand new again

I have an old kit build kentucky style rifle in .45 caliber. The bore is such that it requires cleaning after each shot or it cannot accept another patched ball. Would patching with thin foil or load ball without any patch be useful?
@scottbrickey881610 ай бұрын
Just watched a youtube video on that. "Polishing a rough muzzleloader bore" done by duelist1954 would recommend it. His barrel was from a kit also.

I just received mine in the mail yesterday. They are over $100 today, but I think the price is reasonable. It is a simple device, but appears to be well made. I have come to like Lee products. They are will made and less expensive than their competition.

They are now three times the price at 75 dollars. Great review of a great product.

Only thing I don't like about mine (other than the slightly gapped frizzen fit-up) is the patent breach. Was used to moistened patch swabbing between shots on my Austin-Halleck and could load easily indefinitely with a single patch of a moistened patch. Can't do that with a patent breach cause it leads to ignition issues from my experience

I just bought one of these. Seems like the newer design metering rod that screws directly into the activation lever has solved the drip/leak problem. So far about 1000 bullets cast and simple adjusting stops the dripping/leaking. About $87 from Midway. Also, I think the now vertical metering rod is superior to the older design angled rod. Also, I have seven Lee moulds which produce excellent quality bullets, along with moulds from RCBS, SAECO, Lyman, Nei, and NOE. All top quality.

Always take a caliper with you to a fabric store so you can measure the thickness of the material. You also want to machine wash the material to get the "sizing" out of it. Sizing is sprayed on material to prevent it from fraying and getting dirty during the manufacturing and packaging process. You can also tighten up the weave, which makes the material thicker, by running through the dryer after washing, just like shrinking your clothes. There is difference between pillow ticking and mattress ticking, they're both 100% cotton made of off white material with red or blue stripes. Mattress ticking is thicker material (.020" thick versus .010" or .015"). That's why pre-made patches that look the same are different thicknesses, they're intended for different things. (Soft pillow or rugged mattress) You can also get cotton broadcloth which dress shirts and thin dresses are made of in various densities (.010" thick). I keep wanting to go to a thrift store to get some used cotton sheets and mic them with my calipers. Traditionally, you use a thicker patch with a smaller ball or wider or rounded (or polished/broken in) rifling and a thinner patch with a larger ball or narrower or square sided rifling. Lube makes patches seat faster, allowing for thicker patches, which leads to better accuracy. There's a Goldilocks zone for friction. Too much friction during firing and the patch tears apart and the ball doesn't rotate fast enough, too little friction, the patch isn't imprinted on the rifling enough and the ball doesn't spin right and gets affected by air resistance more. Both increase your group size and inaccuracy. I love the smell of Ballistol, but in a pinch, you can make moose milk out of NAPA cutting oil. Ballistol is actually cutting oil with the addition of clove oil to act as a battlefield first aid disinfectant during WW1, before armies actually had long term care for their soldiers. It also smells nicer than cutting oil. :)

Is there a certain caliper you recommend?
@wittsullivan8130 Жыл бұрын
@@whisperingdeath308 A cheap dial or digital caliper is good enough. I've got a couple of plastic dial calipers from name brand reloading companies, but my go-to is the $20 Harbor Freight digital because it can switch from inches to fractions of an inch to metric with a push of a button, which is really handy sometimes. I was surprised when Adam Savage said they were good enough for him.

I found linen is superior to cotton patches, especially when using heavier powder charges. Linen won't cut and burn through.

I have a Mini Peasant. It's a Roman Peasant knife made in New Zealand from a high-carbon Swedish tool steel called Sanvik L7 that Svord uses with a proprietary tempering formula to create an outstanding blade at a crazy cheap price. Svord makes their money from selling lots of knives instead of selling fewer at a larger profit. I filed that point off the back of the handle. It's a great EDC and you can drop it and so what? It's tough and inexpensive and perfect for what it is, a great blade that holds an edge EXTREMELY well with the most simple handle design and being able to grab that tang as you reach into your pocket is something you get used to right away.

For long storage, I use 3 plastic bags, each inside the others. This reduces evaporation greatly and extends life. 2 gallon size bags are cheap, can be reused a couple times. I do the same with fish food for our aquarium. Large containers of food from the pet shop are stored inside 3 bags. I remove them and fill a tiny can which last about a week. Those are just in one bag. A few of the gun patches are removed into one small container in the shooting bag before going shooting.
