Hi My name is Alexander I am an old photographer who is trying to go back to the good old way on image making. I live in Madagascar and work in Black and white . My plane is to make slat or Gum prints using charcoal dust as a pigment. Please would your way of making pigment work for me. Thanks for your help.

I suspect you have bituminous coal, which is the most common. It has, as the name implies, bitumen and other hydrocarbons in the mix, which is where i suspect the brown tones are coming from. If you can get yourself some anthracite coal, its considered more purely carbon, and lacks the bitumen and tars and silicates that are found in bituminous coal.

How do you regulate the blueness or redness from the pigment, is it by particle size or ingredient's proportion or temperature ? I see thar Old Holland has two different shades of the pigment?

May Caolin be used instead of pure Alumina, to introduce some Silica into the glass pigment mix?

A number of black pigments will make a more neutral gray when mixed with white, while making a more brownish tone when mixed with a transparent medium and glazed.

Hi there, thanks very much for your video, this will definitely get me started. I am making inks from nature, i am going to grow indigo and woad next year. I was wondering do you know if the indigo pigment would stay in solution if you didn't chalk or line , as i am making an ink it would be best to stay suspended in solutions. Kind regards Maurice

Gday mate, might be a strange question but I use dry ground prussian blue pigment mixed with oil to print cast iron surfaces for metrology/scraping. I make my own by mixing the pigment with iso68 oil & a couple drops of kerosene. The pigment seems to want settle out of the oil and not stay in suspension.i need an extremely dark non transparent ink to show the highs and lows of the parts. Any way to help hold the prussian blue in the oil. Cheers

I was just bagging up dried anthemis flowers yesterday, wondering if they might be too dry by now for dyeing - your video has answered my question! Love these videos, thank you!

So I've made about 4-5 natural pigments with your help (thanks!!) and I'm occasionally running into an issue where my pigment won't drain through the coffee filter, so I can't seem to extract the plant pigment from the water it's in. Any tips?

Hi! I love your video and tried it at home with tansy (boerenwormkruid in Dutch) which gave a rich mustard-like yellow color. In the proces I didn't have any foam tho, and I wonder why that happened? The solution also stayed quite yellow after the precipitationproces, there is still a lot of dissolved color left in the water. Should I have added more washing soda?

So glad to find you and your channel. The Australian take on some of this material is super helpful. (I’m in awe of how much time and effort you go to in your practice of making art materials and know the extra load filming it adds!) thank you. I would really love more on using Australian plants to make pigments and inks.

I am appalled at how chromates and dichromates are treated here. This is chromium in the oxidation state +7. ALL CHROMATES/DICHROMATES ARE HIGHLY TOXIC AND ALSO CARCINOGENIC. In addition, lead nitrate is a very easily soluble salt of the very toxic heavy metal lead. I can only warn everyone that playing with such substances and using them as pigments is simply stupid. Anyone who pours the waste from this production down the drain not only risks poisoning the groundwater, but also faces severe punishment from the public prosecutor. It is stupid and irresponsible to post a video like this without pointing out the dangers.

2:51 In fact, pure phosphoric acid is a solid, crystalline substance, not a liquid. It can also be easily concentrated to over 99%. However, it is usually sold commercially as an 85% solution in H2O. The term "glacial" is only used for acetic acid (ethanoic acid). This is because pure acetic acid has a melting point of about 16 °C and then looks like water ice. If you want to concentrate phosphoric acid using heat, you have to be very careful. Phosphoric acid is one of the few acids that can etch glass, especially when heated above a certain temperature. When using highly heated H2PO3 it is always better to use containers made of stainless steel or nickel.

Had to rewind this a couple of times because I had to tend to my own projects. I actually made a bit of a mess with my dye pot. My mistake was not assuming that all yuccas regardless of species were surfactant in some fashion. And so my dye pot boiled over and scattered yucca and water all over the stove. *sigh*

to get rid of the snails, instead of salt, use a container of diatomaceous earth to dry them out. that way it can go in the compost without ruining your soil!! that juice looks like fun! can that be used for dye too?
