Congrats on the baby. I had a 1975 Ford F150 Super Cab with a 390 and a three on the tree back in the late 80's. It had a full 8 foot box and I lived in Minneapolis at the time. If I didn't shift just right the linkage would bind between 1st and 2nd and I'd have to crawl under it and unstick it. It wasn't a good city vehicle. :)

Great old car! You can have a lot of fun with this. I have 2 three-on-the-tree cars now, a 51 Studebaker and a 60 Dodge Dart.

Yes, as others have stated, not a moped. It’s a scooter and a damn fine one that should be able to reach 70mph. Mopeds usually can barely go 25mph and have pedals like a bicycle.

I first learned to drive 3 on the tree in a friend's '60 Econoline van w/ a straight 6 between the front seats in '79. A few years later, I owned a '60 F150 and a '67 Dodge D100. They both had 3 on the trees in them as well as straight sixes, but the Dodge's was a slant!

Congrats on the New Addition to your family! If you paid a thousand bucks for it, you got a bargain. Get familiar with the overdrive. When the OD handle is pulled out, the OD is off. When the OD handle is pushed IN, the OD is on. The OD is like a 4th, higher gear and will save you gas money when you're on the road.(In town, you don't need it, so you can turn it off.) After you get to 3rd gear and you're going about 25 mph, just let off on the gas pedal for a second or two, and you will feel the OD kick in. By the way, if you're in a playful mood, you can also kick in the OD in low and second gears. I enjoyed watching you work on that engine. I love the 100 horse Ford flathead. I had the same engine in high school back in the 1960s in my 1950 Ford, so watching you took me down Memory Lane! Thanks, Stephen

My dad had a 67 GMC pickup with a "3 on the tree". Learned to drive a stick with that truck. Only problem was the clutch took a lot of strength to push down, and it didn't have a rubber pad on the clutch pedal. There were quite a few times my ankle got pounded. Occasionally my foot would slip off and the clutch would snap back into my ankle!

The linkage probably needs rebuilt , those have a tendency to lock up if pounded on especially if the bushings are worn. I’ve owned 2 1967 Chevy pickup’s both 3spds, one 6 the other a 283 V8. My dad had a 64 comet and a 64 Belair with 3 on the tree. 1979 was the last year you could buy a USA made car with a 3spd on the column

No syncro in first gear, must be stopped to shift down without grinding. Fake grill, 54 tail lights. Grew up with a 53 mainline v8 dad bought new. I bought it from him at 15 when I got licensed. Had 82000 miles on it and every thing on the car was worn out, Found a donor car and learned a lot about mechanics.
