Eska ob's are air-cooled Tecumseh engines mounted to a Clinton lower end. Except for the 9.9 and 15 hp which were liquid cooled Tecumseh engines. They all have impellers though. (Some smaller Eskas like the 3 and 3.5 just have a ram tube that carries water up from the prop wash). The air cooled ones just use the impeller to spray down the base of the power head so the lower crank seal doesn't burn up. When the engine is running water should mist out of the two relief holes at the middle of the leg. It should be a pretty good mist too, it should soak your hand within a couple seconds. The engine is mostly air-cooled but it will not be long for this world without the water to cool the base of the powerhead. Some have diaphragm carbs, others are typical float-style carbs. For the diaphragm carbs you just gotta rebuild them. They're just tecumseh engines so most carb kits are still around. The float style ones will usually always gravity feed from the tank fine. But to use the external tank connector on ones that have it there is a small orange duck-bill element that is in the back of the carb. It sees vacuum from the crankcase via a passage in the intake manifold. That vacuum alternately actuates that duck-bill which draws fuel from the tank. Really finicky, but it does work. Eska was in business from the early sixties to 1987. They manufactured outboards for many retailers like Ward's Sea King and Sears' Ted Williams and later Gamefisher outboards. (When Eska went under the Gamefishers from 1988 on were made by Chrysler/Force.)

can a different carb be retrofitted to the sears 3hp?
@alan68322 жыл бұрын
I doubt you needed to fool with that diaphragm. they can still function even when pretty stiff if they are still adjusted well. I would have adjusted the idle screws to get it running and keep it running, with fuel detergent and hope the detergent, heat and vibration adequately cleans out the carb. You probably made the hole in the diaphragm by bending it around, though maybe not.

On your gas cap is a vent, it should be open when you run the engine. With it closed the carb can't draw fuel.
@alan68322 жыл бұрын
You should have either changed the lower unit oil when you saw water, or at least drained out the water by turning the engine so the screw is at the bottom and loosening the screw so that the water drips out, then closing it when the dripping water changes to oil. But once you started the engine, it probably blended and put an end to your ability to drain off the water. I bet a bit of graphite powder would help in that gear box and might even keep lubricating in the presence of water. The gear box has no filter to interfere with lubricating solids like graphite, molybdenum and/or PTFE.

Hot damn, so excited when I see you upload! Also, being from Wisconsin, a lot of our old engines are tecumseh's. Hell, I lived in the town where their headquarters were.

Tecumseh kind of a cold-hearted engine. They start better in the cold than a Briggs & Stratton I think that's why they put it on my snow blower
@lowellfunk89742 жыл бұрын
The diaphragm has to be able to move from atmospheric pressure differential! It's reached its best before date many moons ago John. Replace the diaphragm and that engine will work great! I have the same one just a few years newer and it's an amazing little engine.

I just got one of those. You probably need to clean the carb and get a new spark plug. The ones the come in them are cheap and not really very good. I'm looking for a larger prop for mine. The ones that come on them are so small and wimpy, I think it can run a bigger one.
@cowboy7771200312 жыл бұрын
That is not a water cooled engine it is air-cooled what is coming out at the bottom is the exhaust and check that prop real carefully and make sure it does not say grease for the prop
@technician1222 жыл бұрын
Eska outboards totally have cooling systems. Just not in the traditional sense of most outboards. The smaller and earlier ones just have a pickup tube behind the prop. Later on, larger Eskas began to use impellers. If there isn't water misting out of the relief holes on the leg you can burn up the lower crankshaft seal and then you're S.O.L. bc those seals are unobtanium and the engine will not run if they burn up.

This made me think of when we were kids (ok young drunk adults) we would hook an old ww2 era boat to a 4-wheeler and drag around the yard at high speeds. Good times. The boat also was useful in the nearby pond for frog gigging.

Don't remember any eska being water cooled . I only had opportunity to work on about 10 air cooled versions. They were pretty much bullet proof 2 cycle engines that were air cooled . Also the water of the lake only serves as an exhaust baffle , yes it cooled the exhaust but for that reason they also used thos same engine on( Toro snow throwers) not snow blowers.
