There were two instances: 1. The scene in Batman Returns where Selina Kyle becomes Catwoman. Caught it on TV hen I was around 4 or 5. When she fell from the window snd everything, I realised this was Catwoman’s origin since there was a similar scene to that of her falling during her origin in the Halley Berry movie (which I actually liked as a kid), so I kept watching. When she goes home and is all catatonic she then listens to a few phone messages from her mom(?), she suddenly snaps and starts trashing her place. During this, she actually takes a few stuffed animals she has and starts stabbing them and shoving them in her sinks garburator. This was the bit that really upset me. I was very attached to my stuffed animals as a kid (and still am), which included sock monkeys, so seeing toys similar to mine be essentially massacred, let alone by an anti-hero I really liked like catwoman, was incredibly messed up for young me. My parents switched the channel moments after when they heard me crying. 2. A similar situation occurred with a tv show. I think I was still 4 or 5-ish, The tv was on some crime show. I can’t remember which one, it might’ve been one of the CSI shows or something? Anyway, it was the opening of an episode and I asked my dad to change the channel (I had no clue how to use the remote as a small child) but I think he was busy with something. I kept watching. The scene was at a bank and suddenly a robbery started and the robber was a guy dressed as Santa Claus. Eventually the cops show up and its revealed the robber actually has a bomb strapped to his chest. The robber says something to the effect of; I had to. They made me. And then the bomb went off. And then there’s a shot of the robbers now charged and gory head and torso falling onto the hood of a car. I don’t think I need to explain how a scene like this scarred a young me. And my parents swiftly shut the tv off.

Oh that's a funny one it was Sweedney Todd! I was probably around 7 or 8 when it came out and I did not understood musicals at all at the time, my perception was that they where singing about killing their costumers and they would just stay there waiting for their demise. Will never forget the ending where that woman burns alive, got second degree burns already and God that hurt. So that's it, it's dumb, i was a dumb kid.

I remember watching Poltergeist when I was about 9. It was the first “big kid” horror movie I had ever watched and it was also the first time I experienced hysteria. It was the scene when the house became became fully possessed and when the daughter became trapped in the TV.

Yeah I can definitely see why a scene where a kid who gets kidnapped by a TV would absolutely scare a kid watching the film on a TV.

For me it was the “mockumentairy” from animal planet about mermaids, they presented it as completely real and some of those puppets scared me a lot, I was afraid of the ocean and even of the small stream near my house.

My most distinct childhood memory of being scared by a horror movie was being terrified by the beginning of the ring, lmao I also have a vivid memory of watching the tanning bed scene in final destination 3. It absolutely horrified me but it also got me into the series, and it's my favorite film series to this day

This is kind of like MistaGG when he watched The Exorcist 'It scared the shit out of me as a kid but damn do I respect it.' So glad we got a chance to talk about 1 hour photo. If you want to see Robin Williams in another fucked up movie, might I recommend Worlds Greatest Dad, a depressing black comedy that... I honestly don't even want to spoil the premise for.

When I was about 5 or 6, our house got cable TV. Mind you, this was the early 80's so I just spent many many hours watching random shows and movies that I had no business watching. Nothing ever really phased me or scared me much, until I saw the film Altered States. It haunted me for a long time. Then I was reminded of it later when I had experience with psychedelics, which gave it a whole new deeper fear because I knew how they worked. Just...YIKES.

Amazing movie saw it for the first time when I was about 13 or 14 loved it, was always into darker movies and horror movies and Robin Williams was one of those few actors who I could always rely on for laughs so seeing him in my favorite genre was great (awesome jynx shirt btw)

One Hour photo was one of those movies I never saw as a kid, but I knew because of how weird the visuals were whenever they were used in video essays about horror. I watched it about a year ago and it was fine. Solid work you’re doing, Zelcher.

My story is similar to yours. I remember walking in on my parents watching this film (specifically during that scene) and it stuck. For a long time, I had no idea what that scene was from or why it still made me so uncomfortable so many years later. I recently watched One Hour Photo in it’s entirety and I’m happy to say that I can admire it now. Great video!

The film that scared me beyond belief as a kid (the the point where I STILL can't watch it over 10 years later!) Was the surger scene from the live action Inspector Gadget. I already had a fear of surgery, especially the idea of foreign objects in the body from the game Operation, so watching the fear unfold love action gave me night terrors for years

I can name a bunch of childhood trauma examples in my case. I even remember seeing the trailer of One Hour Photo and feeling very creeped out by Robin Williams' character. This is gonna be a lot, but I'm sure some of you can relate: 1). Freddy Vs. Jason trailer & Nightmare on Elm Street in syndication (every time there was a TV commercial trailer for Freddy Vs. Jason, I literally needed to walk out of the room in 2003. 2). The beginning of the 1988 remake of the Blob (my grandma happened to see that I looked concerned and confused and pinched scared, so she turned off the TV and said, "Ok, that's enough TV for now" and took me outside of the room. 3). The trailer for 28 Days Later first conjured my fear of zombies. With red eyes and speed, I asked myself, Zombies can run?! We're in big trouble. 4). Any scenes with the creature in Mimic 2. 5). The scene Candyman kills the psychiatrist and jumps out of the window. Also, the motherfucking bees throughout Candyman. I couldn't even look at the VHS cover when I was a kid. 6). The deaths of the antagonists in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark & Walter Donovan in the Last Crusade. 7). The Witches (1990) meeting scene. 8). The mural scene in Rogue Cop Revelation, the dolls in KKK Comeuppance, "the monster" in Boys Do Get Bruised, & Satan at the end of Tales from the Hood. These are just a few examples that have been ingrained in my mind.

When I was around 8, one of my friends became a subscriber to something known internationally as "Weird n' Wild Creatures", which were info cards in A5 format about animals, extinct animals.... and fictional and mythological monsters. Now I am and was a big monster fanatic so I loved to read about them but some legitemately terrified me. This feeling was heightened by me reading about the monsters in my friend's family's apartment, a place that I wasn't too familiar with and I especially found the elevator and staircase disturbing to go through because I wasn't used to it from my upbringing. I kept expecting Mr. Hyde to jump out from every corner.

@@ZelcherProductions - Yeah, another good example was that Batman was canonically a Sailor Moon fan and that his favorite was Mars, when it was just a misinterpretation of a small Easter Egg in one issue, but it sounds quirky so I'd better spread it as real!

When I was 12/13 my family were at a family friends house for a get together and me, my dad and the other family's dad were watching The Sixth Sense. I was all fine until the scene with the hanging bodies. I noped out of the living room, upstairs to one of the younger kids bedrooms and played a little game called Final Fantasy VII for the first time.

A mini list of sorts, none of them are that deep Spectacular spiderman villain transformations, i.e sandman's body distorting and then exploding into a pile of sand while he's screaming, the x ray of doc ock's skeleton as the arms fuse with his spine, lizard's eye buldging out before the full lizard head forms, Literally any appearance of venom in anything, including the Topher Grace one which resulted in me creating a false memory of venom beating the shit out of cops at the construction site, but this is only a 3 second scene, The goblin bomb turning the oscorp stockholders into skeletons then ashes, the goblin jumpscare in the burning building Now for a non spiderman one, transformers prime, all of the terrorcon virus stuff including Airarchnid cannibalizing her minions and cliffjumper's death plus unwilling use as a dark energon test subject, breakdown's death, the scraplets, Terminator 2 nuke scene plus seeing a terminator salvation cabinet at chuck e cheese, related to CEC, during the first fnaf boom I went to CEC and was trying to find freddy fazbear, saw a employee exit out a door near the stage and saw something brown, resulting in me thinking I saw Freddy fazbear. Alien from signs, war of the worlds invasion, weirdly i wasn't phased by a similar scene in the 3rd transformers movie that shows a city I like less than a hour away from me and i saw when i was younger, and thats really it, I was a sheltered kid who only watched PBS for the longest while, in the end this mini list isnt so mini
