Cool study. Normaly for little guys I just yank the hook out then see if they can swim off and become food for predators. Saw an osprey snatch up one of my releases before.

@@OrilliaFishing it’s resealed with the cap put back on, preventing anything in the water from oxidizing and it’s purified water where there’s no organic matter or organisms in it. Plus you don’t have the chemistry of the fish’s internal organs and/or the chemistry that occurs between lake water and a fish’s internal organs/fluids replicated in your isolated and controlled environment for your experiment. Will all that make a difference? No one can say for sure. Yet. But there’s too many variables to just plop a piece of steel in a sealed water bottle and say you got the answer. Could you replicate the test with an open bucket of lake water? Still won’t have the chemistry of the fish involved, but it would be a lot closer so you could more accurately figure out what the verdict was.

My 13 year old gullet hooked a fish on father's day. Unfortunately the fish died after removing the hook. He almost wants to quit now. I told him it happens to even the best angler and that if he feels bad for his fish he is a true angler at heart. I did not know the mtn dew/sprite trick. Will put that piece of knowledge in the bag for later.

Once the waterfront is done, they have a great fishing dock. Spring has some great fishing in the little canals but summer is tough. I see guys fishing the narrows from the old train bridge. You can get there by taking the trail behind the strip mall by crates boats

I once caught a bass with a eagle claw like the pre tied snelled hooks in the package the old school stuff. Coming out its rear. The line with the loop was sticking out and the hook was showing. I gently removed it. Fish seemed healthy.

I don’t remember which video it was BUT Ethan at @fishanything has a KZbin video where he catches a bass and it had a hook poking out of its “butthole” that he removed and put in his kayak to dispose of later before releasing the bass! No telling how that hook got to its butthole other than it possibly passing through its system
