Bad shinpans 😒
@Corey916663 күн бұрын
What do you know? Judging an ippon through a video like this is Impossible. However it is visible that the shinai reached its targets for hoshiko. No other strike did. So solid judging here. The quality of the given ippon is hard to evaluate because we dont have the natural sound.
@ban64563 күн бұрын
@@Corey91666sure doesnt mean we cant question the legitimacy of the shinpans for this wkc. After seeing the way they acted during the teams final many people share the sentiment that this years shinpans underperformed by a large margin.
@Corey916662 күн бұрын
@@ban6456 that is a huge generalization and shows that a broad mass usually holds no actual knowledge to properly judge a performance. Yes the shushin (main ref) in the finals fucked up. He did. However i dont know if you ever judged a kendo shiai yourself. Let alone the most competitive team match there is. The strikes are insanely fast, the techniques advanced, you get unusual situation due to super high intensity. Its very tough. Doesnt help when people watching with 0 knowledge start to shout at you. Also korea is highly emotional in these wkcs which is not always good. They try to heavily influence shinpan decisions with exegerated behaviour and mannerism. The only obvious underperformance was the shushin in team finals because he tried to be uber correct and not make the mistakes of the last final. In the end he made it worse. But 1 thing needs to be kept in mind in kendo. "Wrong" decisions regarding ippon are part of the game as a) rules allow certain things and b) kendo is super fast and sometimes only 1 shinpan can clearly see what is going on.
@ban64562 күн бұрын
@@Corey91666 i would not give such a benefit of doubt for such high level shushi. My sensei Shozo Kato sensei always says that nanadans at that level are expected to be shinpans of high degree and demonstrate competence in a consistent manner. Throughout the matches there was not much consistency and as such it can be expected that this years wkc was not of as quality. If we were talking about regional tournaments regarding this then yes what you are saying is fair. At the wkc, this is way too much leeway. Also the korean team had a right to act the way they did considering how biased things were against them. If it was at the level you are saying they would have most definitely got an hansoku.
Yes. Thank you for the constant support and I will come up with more videos after I go back home.

Fighting against jodan in general is an uphill battle. Jodan always threatens men so you want to have low hands to enforce jodan to strike men and protecting your kote. However if you want to apply basic strategies like men kaeshi men you must raise the hands on opponents movement. This opens up kote again which means if you react too much like that your kote will get hit regardless. Now you can try to have high hands and be aware of the kote to do kote kaeshi men which is probably safer. In general though you need a much higher level to beat any decent jodan as this classic kote is a huge trap. Kote nuki men is a thing and its the most predictable way to approach jodan. Also if you are not used to that kote it can be difficult to actually make it an ippon against jodan.

What i can see is an empty kote and it sounds like mengane. Ofc i dont want to be rude it seems like a right left renzoku waza (kote men) although it makes no sense in my head to do right left when left right actually is a potential threatening move. Attacking "kote" to the right is a dangerous way to receive debana men and results in 0 pressure other than someone raising hands because you moved. Looking more closely it resembles more like a men men renzoku waza. However again for a men your intentions are pretty weak due to the first non-threatening movement. You dont attack the shinai, you dont threaten men or kote and your movement doesnt suggest any kind of commitment. I would probably just step back when i see sth like this. If you would do this much more sharply it could actually threaten stronger opponents. Although i dont see much of your opponent i dont really feel much resistance. Hes either a beginner, low dan or relaxed older guy.

I started practicing nito about 3 months ago. Naturally, I'm still very much a beginner, but I've found the experience really interesting, and I think I've come across some principles which are critical, but not obvious to somebody just trying nito out. Understanding the principle that the shinai rotates around the center of mass was a real breakthrough for me. With ito, the right hand is the fulcrum. It's closer than the center of mass, so when the left hand moves one inch down, the tip moves 3 inches up. When using only one hand, the fulcrum is the center of mass. It's further away, so you don't get the same ratio. Maybe 2:1 instead of 3:1. But the principles are the same. Basically, you've got an invisible hand to work with. The trajectory of the strike is also a little different than with ito big ben. With ito, you aim to get the sword to move in a large arc. With nito, this trajectory makes it very difficult to stop the shinai at the correct level since there's so much downward momentum. So instead, you aim to fling the center of mass forward. Imagine throwing an axe. This way, the shinai is moving mostly forward and only slightly down, so to stop the shinai, you mostly just need to not let go. I think these principles are demonstrated fantastically at the beginning of the video. The fist goes up, the tip goes down. If you try to do this by squeezing your hand, you will never get an acceptable strike. Instead, he does this by using the center of mass as a fulcrum in the same way the right hand is used for ito small men. My initial source for this lesson was "Musashi's Ken" page 16. industrykendo.com/Articles/Musashi%20no%20Ken%20(%E6%AD%A6%E8%94%B5%E3%81%AE%E5%89%A3).pdf

I really appreciate your videos. Could you do a really deep dive video into fumikomi? A similar video to this but explaining exactly what part of your foot hits the ground, how to make a good sound, how to keep good posture, how to NOT bruise your heel, etc. Some slow motion of the feet would help too. Fumikomi is a constant struggle as your trying to match body mechanics of other high ranked kendokas but what we think we are doing and what our bodies are actually doing are usually 2 different things.

Blocking away from yourself and far away as possible is the "right kihon", but never really works in high level shiai with fast opponents. Was analyzing back in the day eiga's, takanabe's and teramoto's kaeshi do's. All of them block it with hands towards the body, so their do strike is only the downwards motion, as you don't have time to block in front and swing around for the do.
@KendotipsАй бұрын
I actually have a video analyzing Eiga sensei's kaeshi do, and there are a couple things to note. When doing kaeshi (evven for Kihon) the goal is not to catch the shinai as far away as possible, but instead catch it "forward" meaning that you want to use the tip of your shinai rather than "pulling" the arms back and receiving the hit backwards. This will cause to be way too close for you to have time to give a valid strike. Also the idea is not to block and then swing, instead the deflection to be part of the swing. Maybe I should update a couple of things in this video, thank you for watching and bringing this up!

This is harai since you are deflecting the opponents shinai before they begin their attack. From my understanding of suriague you also shouldn’t be moving your shinai side to side, only keeping a strong center when you lift to knock the opponents shinai away.
@KendotipsАй бұрын
Something to add here, Harai is shikake waza, so it initiates the attack rather than deflecting the attack like suriague. The motion depending on the case can be similar in both though.

I felt like more than being a technique he was opening for a moment to lure the opponent for a kaeshi waza, in that moment the opponent probably startled between non falling for it and wanting to attack. That hesitation was the perfect opportunity for a men strike

I've been told by my sensei that I don't come at him straight, and told that I move away as if I avoid him.. I get worried about crashing into him and other people don't want to knock them down... is this just a mindset I need to get past? I recently got the green light to wear my men, so, I am expected to just "go!"

I regret sometimes the fact that I’ve been trained to always go forward, never step back, not even to regain distance but instead just step in close. I think sometimes stepping back is needed as long as it’s controlled and part of the plan
