Thanks for the video. Using the right hand as a pivot or anchor point makes a lot of sense. I find that if I am off target with my Men strikes it it is because I am using too much right arm, so I consciously try to use my right as a guide and that helps. I think using the palm to anchor the shinai as it moves forward will help even more.

As a left handed kendoka who practice like right handed person,I would use my right hand only to firmly grip my shinai I use my left hand most of the time to control my shinai Thanks for making the video,sensei This video makes me understand more about my body and how to control more efficiently

The image illustrating the post, a shot from another video (?) showing a Kote hit against an opponent recurring to infamous 'Sanpō-mamori' (三方守り) as defensive stance; I'm afraid the majority of Shinpan wouldn't recognise that hit as Yūkō-datotsu, because the Shinai motion is upwards, although there's no article in the Regulations ruling how the Shinai must hit the target, if downward or upward motion..🤔 More or less, the same problem with Kote-uchi attempts if done in lateral, diagonal motion; instead of using core muscles to pull the left arm down and, then the Shinai, it'll tend to be made using shoulder muscles pulling the right arm, I think...😶 If done so, it's much difficult to perform a motion with the Shinai which correctly emulates a cut!, hence the unwillingness of Shinpan to recognise such strikes as valid...

There are many instances where shinpan don’t award ippon and some times is not clear on the reason. I believe that we all could use more studying of the rules and regulations for kendo shiai

Jose you’re working to hard for that kote strike when your opponent is doing sanpomamori. When your opponent is doing sanpomamori treat it as if they are doing a defective joudan kamae. Normally when someone is doing joudan correctly we would normally go for the opponent’s left kote since it’s closets but since the opponent is doing sanpomamori it’s the opposite,now their right kote is closer to you to hit. Just hit their kote as if you were hitting a chisai yoko men and angle your foot work like you’re hitting dou. Shinpan should call that kote since it’s Article 13 #2 in the Subsidiary Rules of Kendo Shiai and Shinpan ( might be a different article since I don’t have the updated Covid version of the book)

Jose, thank you so much for this. I tried your tips and it’s game changer for my oji waza. Question: do you squeeze your right hands fingers (tenouchi) to increase the impact or do you solely use it as an anchor point and all the force comes from your left hand? I’m asking this because I still do feel the impact is sharper (not stronger or hard but sharper) if I use tenouchi from both hands.
@Kendotips
@Kendotips Жыл бұрын
Thank you, if you could when you get some time, let me know what has been the most useful in order for me to keep making more! Regarding tenouchi, it is hard to explain it without showing it, short answer is that I use both hands for tenouchi, but instead of "increasing" the impact, I think it offers control on the sword which in my opinion makes it easier to transfer the power from the left hand. Mainly my right hand catches the shinai at the end of the swing but I believe as a consequence of me squeezing my fingers in the tenouchi it also may add slightly to the impact. I will try to remember and talk about it in camera during my next stream, hopefully I can make it make more sense. Thank you again for watching

Nice video, but I have another Kendo related question. Did Hasso and Waki get banned from being played in Shiai?
@Kendotips
@Kendotips Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, I don't think there is any official ban, and in some cases you will see a variation of this on fights against Jodan or nito, but In general I don't think they are as effective.

Thank you Jose, I have found this video very helpful. Do you rotate the shinai when fumikiri happens? Or when the rotation should happen? Thank you again for your clarification.
@Kendotips
@Kendotips Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and the support. The rotation (at the beginning happens as you engage your hands forward. But you shouldn’t focus so much on that motion specifically. The engagement of the Hands should happen as you do your Fumikiri (ideally you want to keep your hands to your self as long as possible) let me know if I made this more confusing hahaha

Question to kendoka. Do people doing kendo experience hair loss ? With wearing men and tight tengui? Their was a post once amongst japanese students who said kendo makes people go hagi ( bald)

Is hard to know without seeing it, but maybe it could help to think of the right hand to be there to catch the shinai at the moment of impact? Feel free to join the Kendo Tips discord server and you can message and maybe send me a video discord.gg/x5rBSZHnx3 Thank you for watching!
