I have a lab mix she’s got a good bit of gun dog in her other than lab such as Weimeriner, and springer spaniel and a few other breeds she’s five months old and so, so smart but, we have a lot to work on. I decided to try taking her to a dog friendly restaurant today after we had been walking in and out of stores for some groceries. She did great walking in, while I ordered the food while I talked to someone about her sun glasses (at which point she was rubbing a little on me so I think I need to readjust them as they might have been a tad tight idk 🤷‍♀️ I’ll have to check) tried to figure out a table away from folks sat down and realized I needed some water. She has a solid down stay at home and USUALLY out in public but today wasn’t one of those days. I relented as I needed some water so had her follow me up then she stops right before the drink station right in the path of the door into the kitchen. Took a second to realize why and it was due to the sound the soda machine was making. It was embarrassing but it’s not like I can train her for that particular sound/ atmosphere. That is something I can’t prompt her for and just have to take her to places with that atmosphere more often. Honestly the way she stopped I thought she had gotten the runs (which would have been even MORE embarrassing as she seemed fine that day) but thankfully she hadn’t. Nor has she had an accident in store aside the pet store when she was maybe 12-14 weeks old because she got overly excited by some folks but I had napkins with me to clean up. In any case I got my water and once we were back I got her to lay back down beside me not exactly where I wanted her on the inside but it’s fine I took the inside and she took the outside blocking me in. So just adding more of that to my list of things to work on I guess. I anticipate even more embarrassing things like this to come for the next two years but I’m sure it will be less and less as often is the case with repetition

I have a German shepherd mix, that we have to re-home, because she isn't fit for service work, and shes aggressive (the main reason is because of her aggression) she recently bit by grandpa and i can't risk her biting one of my little sister (5 and 10 years old) i just can't risk it, and i feel really bad but i cant imagine if she bit one of my sisters, so she has to be re-homed, i feel like a horrible owner. But i feel like she will be happer in a home without kids and other dogs (we have a great Dane also).

I’ll be taking my SDIT with me in junior year. There’s two service dogs at my school already, but both will be gone by that time. We just got a new principal and I’m mildly concerned about brining my SDIT, as the other SD handlers at my school have been upset with the way he handles them. I’m not too worried about it, perks of having a lawyer mom, I guess, but I do know it’s going to be a struggle. I hope that overall the experience is positive

My service dog is a Portuguese water dog. The program where he's from mainly works with Labradors and Porties (they prefer them over Poodles) as a hypoallergenic breed and I can say they're a really great choice! It's very important to look out for a reputable breeder though because they're quite active and on the sensitive side of dogs therefore they need a stable upbringing to qualify for service dog work later on.

As someone who has had a medical German Shepherd service dog, mine was totally not high strung. My biggest issue is that he wasn’t as in tune with me as I wish he had been and my dog was actually kind of rare, because he’s somewhat lazy. He will be turning eight this year, which means he is formally retired. However, I do have luxury of getting to keep my medical service dogs once they retire. I know not everyone gets to do this, so I consider myself extremely lucky. My medical service dogs will not be rehomed, they just get to live out their days with me. I’m back to watching these kinds of videos, seeing as I am looking for a new dog to take up that role as my old one gets to enjoy his well deserved retirement. The one thing I do have to encourage people on who have PTSD to remember is if the dog is not in tune to your mental state, they may not realize they need to do the interruption tasks. This can be a huge problem and it’s part of why so many people do go with service dogs that feed off their mental state. I personally, really need a dog that’s going to recognize both of my physical needs and mental health. So the fab four, usually don’t work out well for me.

I love the covers on the seats in your car. Anyways, I am going to a boarding school and I am kinda nervous because he's never been in an environment like that so I am currently trying to prepare him for that.

As a guide dog handler with a program dog I may carry… 1. My dog is already wearing their collar, Harness, and leash. 2. Occasionally a treat pouch with kibble and treats. 3. Poop bags 4. During California summers I will often carry a collapsible bowl, a full water bottle, and shoes. The sidewalk and streets are too hot even in the shade. That’s about it. Most of the time I only go out with their harness, collar, leash, and poop bags.

@alexisrivas307 10 ай бұрын
TIP: Using a portion of your dog’s daily allotment of kibble works well as average rewards that don’t necessarily need high value rewards. Cheerios are also a good option. These two reward recommendation wouldn’t cause your dog to gain weight. High value rewards are important, I’m not saying that. These lower level treat options rewards your dog for a basic or fully trained behavior/task.

I’ve been on the waiting list for my second standard poodle guide dog from the Guide Dog Foundation in New York. My first poodle had some strange working behavior that couldn’t be fixed. She would refuse to get into idling vehicles. This could be personal vehicles of all kinds, buses, and trains. I believe we got home on a Thursday or Friday and I had classes (college) on Monday. I had to half drag half carry her onto the bus. That wasn’t a good look. Anyways, I’d like to do more of the grooming myself with my next poodle. There is a content creator with a standard poodle and she just shaves him down all over. No poodle specific cuts. My first poodle would get a poodle sport cut which looks nice for working dogs. Please post more videos on grooming tools, a brushing video with talking us through what you are doing, and most importantly the hair trimming and shaving. From the tiny poodle guide dog population, we appreciate content creators who talk instead of or in conjunction with subtitles and thought bubbles. It sucks, our eyes don’t work so good. LOL 👀🙄🤣🐩🦮

OMG I never considered the leash wrap (tbh I didn't know it even existed until recently). My SD has the exact issue you were talking about where she relies on having her SD vest or her SD backpack on to know she's in work mode when in public. For me she still behaves relatively well but there is definitely a difference. I will definitely look into that for when I get a puppy in the future! I'd say the gear that I have and use the most often is: SD harness vest Standard Collar A hands free leash (connects to your waist) A short leash (I think its about 12 inches long including the handle) Doggie booties Dog Water Bottle I often forget to bring the treat pouch, and store the poo bags in my personal bag. I generally forget my collapsible bowls as well. Ofc I have a crate and plenty of other things but atm I'm only really thinking of things I take when leaving the house. As a person with a handler trained SD I do want to learn more tips and techniques others use to work on their training and gear people use. I am a bit iffy about using a clicker because I do not know how to use it properly and I've seen firsthand how if you don't do it right, it can do much more harm than good. However, from everything I've seen of properly used clickers, I do believe that it is a skill I will need to learn as it is far more beneficial to train a dog with one than without one!

Im currently working on going in to be evaluated, and get a PSD note to be able to get a service dog for my PTSD, and if all goes well and is accepted, is there any smaller dog breeds that would be good for a PTSD SD? Im sure i could be capable of a larger one if needed but it'd be easier in my household to have a little bit of a smaller breed, so any suggestions would be really appreciated so i can look into them!
