2 nice wild brownies, great stuff and well fished in tricky conditions. A microfiber cloth in your jacket might help with pesky raindrops on the camera lens. Most enjoyable with the river looking good. Cheers Peter.

What a beautiful section of river, even if the pike weren’t cooperating! Out of interest, do you wear one of those midge net head thingys to stop the little sods feasting on you? Asking for a friend! 😂😂👍

Yes lovely stretch of river. I do sometimes wear a midge net but not that day. I actually have a jacket and headnet in one that is good when they are really bad. Fine for lures and bait fishing but not much use for fly fishing as you cant see the fly on the water.

Nice one Iain, cor luv a duck-the pike certainly did!! Maybe try that on the Ayr, and possibly invest in a couple of pike flies, could be good fun too, cheers Peter.

Hi Peter. Yes the Pike certainly liked the duck that day. Good fun. There isnt any pike in the Ayr so probably not catch much on the duck there. Maybe get a salmon. That would be a turn up for the books!! Never tried fly fishing for pike. Might have to give it a go.

Pike is good eating, Just lots of cross bones. Makes good fish cakes and fish curry.

Thanks Peter. Was just nice to catch sum fish. Been a hard year for trout on the river. Not sure why. Just doesnt seem to be the usual amount of fish. Or im just not being very lucky? Has been alot of comorants over the winter so could be that too.

The brown trout season is closed from end september to middle of march here in Scotland. There is no closed season for grayling on the river Ayr. Although I was fishing for brown trout

@@barbcoll100 That one in the video is metal but quite heavy. you can make your own with wood and a bit of lead on the bottom but I would think a metal one would be better. ive seen metal folding ones that look good. just needs a bit of weight to it

you can get a day ticket in the Annbank shop for 25 quid. That allows you to fish for Salmon Catch and release. you can also fish for Brown trout and Grayling. Hope that helps

It's been a long close season, but the spring hasn't quite sprung yet so we might have to wait a wee bitty longer. I've had a few casts but I'm waiting until it's fun before going out again.

For spring fishing generally choose a river that’s had or has spring fish in it,,lived and fished in Ayrshire for 40 years and never ever heard of anyone getting a fish in feb or march out the ayr

Best too fish them slow it's all about the speed and cast slightly upstream and let it swing round.took me a while but I get lots of salmon fishing them esp black or bright colours depending on clarity and height

Very good video. I have fished the Bladnoch and Tarff for almost 40 years. My son in law owns the Mochrum Park beat . Unfortunately the salmon fishing is not a patch on what it used to be. 😢

Thanks. I have access to a stretch of the upper Bladnoch. Sadly the river doesnt hold any salmon up the bit I fish anymore as the acid from the bogs leaches into the water and the water is now to acidic for salmon eggs to germinate. Its true what you say about not being as many salmon. Sadly that seems to be a common theme of rivers in the uk these days. Still some coarse fish and a few trout so still worth a cast

Thanks mate. The season is over so wont be many of the river till next year. Might get out to do sum grayling fishing or on a rainbow trout fishery. Cant wait till the season opens 2024

Hi Ian, great content as always. Myself and a good friend are giving up on the river irvine and buying ayr permits next year to fish march to June for trout and after the first summer spate, salmon on the fly mostly. We want the ballochmyle stretch but are looking to add another, possibly downstream and wider and deeper. Any suggestions? Annbank? Craigie? What would or do you fish? Hope to see you by the way and shake your hand.

It did look good that day. I guess just no fish in the pool or not interested in the fly. Was a hard year this year 0n the river. I have a feeling next year will be a good one.

You will increase your catch rate if you cast upstream and retrieve back with pace.
