Thank you. I've been waiting for this for so long. I bought it on release day but sadly I have a huge backlog to cover. I'm so anxious to play this but it's better to save the best for last. I was 8 years old when I first played Legacy of Kain and Blood Omen. I had such a deep appreciation for these games. The story, the character designs, the voice acting, the world, the characters themselves. It was fantastic.

I'm pretty dissappointed with these remasters. And I loved the TR ones by the same team. We get a new Raziel model but they don't even change the wraith blade? I mean, really? I'm supposed to take that 1999 wraith blade in a detailed Raziel model seriously? Same for the SR2 blade. I can even stomach the lack of changes to the actual maps and textures........but no updated wraith blades was a crime. In the TR remasters they were never afraid to take some risks.

We love the legacy of Kain series... and I personally am so glad this was canceled. I'm satisfied with remakes for now. Can't wait to play Soul Reaver 1 and 2 remastered

Yeah I’m glad it got canceled too. It felt like it had no connection the universe we were introduced to. No reoccuring characters, TWO new characters out of nowhere (the vampire and human who he kills… and all of the sudden they’re on in the same?) makes no sense. Why is there another wraith-like creature ?

Over ten years later and this footage helped me figure out how to get to the boss area in the remaster that just came out. The funny thing is, I somehow was able to figure all this out and beat the game back when it came out on the Dreamcast, without any guides or help. Anyway, thanks for the video!

There's a difference between edge with eloquence and pure, unthinking edge. Let me put it this way: I love the writing style of George R.R. Martin, and I love the Game of Thrones TV show... it was great, until it wasn't. But I wouldn't want a Legacy of Kain game written or presented like a Westeros story. A Nosgoth story is edge with eloquence. Even Blood Omen 2 understood that it needed to retain that style, and it kept to writing clever, witty dialogue (such as it could). Legacy of Kain is interesting in that it really doesn't need to use foul language or have enemies running around with their mammaries flapping in the wind to convince you how "adult" it is. You can revel in the edge, in having a magic ninja star that explodes the flesh off your enemies' bones, but when Kain laughs maliciously, you've heard enough of his haughty take on the world to know he's not some grinning dudebro munching Doritos and sipping Mountain Dew, he's a brutal warlord with a goddamn education and he doesn't care if you think he's a nerd for talking pretty, either. There's poetry and wit and philosophical weight to the style of writing in Legacy of Kain. It counterbalances the edge-factor and elevates it, melds harmoniously with it. Legacy of Kain is happy to let you be a sadistic, grinning bastard and a thinking man at the same time. It's cynical, but it still has a place (somewhere) for a naive honorable wraith grasping at strings for a reason not to hate what he's become, while giving an immortal vampire tyrant a path to restoring the balance of the world. Yes, it's got edgy content. But if all it had was that, you can bet your boots we wouldn't have put up with the steady decline of the game design over the course of the series. Yeesh.

I'm playing it in widescreen, but during cutscenes I get these black borders at the top and bottom of the screen (where 4:3 aspect ratio would have been). But yours doesn't do that. Is there a setting I'm missing so the letterbox bars stretch across the full length of the screen?

There are two widescreen modes, make sure the widescreen game cheats only is applied.

13:27 LOL what does that even mean? Soul Reaver takes place 1000+ years in the future in a Lovecraftian Apocalypse. We're gonna ignore that happened? I assume no one knew what the story actually was, and several of them also never cared. Personally, Dead Sun's ideas always sounded tacky and lame even out of context of the LoK series, and when they were repurposed into the Lord of the Rings universe, it was just as bad.

As a 10 year old kid when i started playing this series, i have to question the intelligence of a writer when they call it convoluted(or worse). Especially considering it was made by Amy Hennig, someone who i don't believe has made anything less than wildly successful game stories, and i dont think she's been negative towards her early works either.

11 year old video series just saved me a ton of frustration trying to get through the Remaster. The game design just isn't as intuitive as modern day stuff and I would have been lost the whole time. You have my thanks!

BRILLIANT work on this remaster, Raina. The LoK community owes you an incalculable debt of gratitude forever 🙏 Apologies if this has already been brought to your attention, but when I played the section featured in this short, there was a big black cube enveloping each of the 3 bodies you return the heart to. I thought this was just a freak glitch, so I reloaded. Still there. Then I watched someone else's playthrough. They had it too. Will this bizarre glitch be patched? Additionally, the "Great Old One" trophy fails to recognize when all the eldritch power-ups have been collected if they're not discovered in just the right order. And it still shows that there's a health token to collect in the Ruined City despite it being collected.

No, it's a re-created, re-rendered version of the original game's opening FMV. Still an FMV, but re-done short-for-shot in higher resolution with all of the original CGI assets.

the door doesn't open, I pressed the 4 switches but the door doesn't appear... I'm on PS5

It worked for me just now. I’m on PS5 as well. I read on Reddit that if you use the save state or rewind feature then it might not work. I pressed all the switches back to back like in this video and the door opened for me. You get the trophy “She’s a Fine Vessel” once you go through the teleporter.

When I was a kid, always watched the PS1 trailer, time after time, and wondered about the deleted areas. Seeing this trailer again, reminds me of childhood memories. By the way, the lost levels are not remastered in the game, but in this trailer looks like they are. Maybe on a future update?? I'm really happy for playing this remastered. And thanks for the team and Raina Audron for making this dream reality.

So let me get this straight. They were able to render original intro in much higher resolution video and then just proceeded to crop it. In other words. Intro video now has better resolution and less video compression artifacts , but also it's been bastardized by cropping (removing)huge chunks of it and effectively ruining intended framing/composition just for the sake to suit widescreen monitors better.....and I'm supposed to praise them on job well done ?

In defense to making it widescreen, yes. It's upsetting, I get that. But it's still a good cutscene regardless and it's honestly not even that noticeable for those who are coming into this for the first time. Now if you want sloppy, look at Soul Reaver 2's intro. It was just ported with AI filtering in the background. I'd give the first game's intro praise for not being THAT lazy.

I mean, yeah. The added detail visibility and smoothness is far more valuable to the impact of the scene, and the "intended composition and framing" would have also been equally thrown off had they added great chunks of heretofore unseen screen real estate on both sides of the scene. It's quite possible that the original FMV's assets and animation data wouldn't have had anything to fill those spaces with, which might have turned out worse. Apart from that concern, I am not inclined to count the visibility of Raziel's left nipple or a character's forehead being slightly out of frame for a few seconds as super-important to the framing of the scene, either.

@@OneTrueNobody I prefer my 4:3 content uncropped.... If you want it cropped .crop it yourself , there's video settings that let you do that. That way we both get to choose without forcing the other...

Even as a classic Tomb Raider fan, I found this game to be very confusing. No wonder I never finished it as a kid. It was quite rare that I'd know what to do when entering an area unless the cutscene told me. Having to resort to guides every hour kind of killed the mood, as I spent a lot of time aimlessly switching between realms. The box puzzles weren't new to me as a Tomb Raider fan, but enemies spawning during them was very annoying. Another issue I had was items. How were we supposed to know when they were accessible? "Switch to X location and use your Soule Reaver on a big stone" - I was supposed to know I could do this? Very outdated mechanics, and some frustrating moments of being lost and confused in an otherwise GREAT game.
