This will not hold up! If you want to understand why...go to novak adapter and you'll see that the combination he's using will only allow 30% of the clutch friction disc to grab the flywheel. It's going to vibrant something crazy! Those dowel pins are what centers the pressure plate on the flywheel. This whole thing is a complete problem waiting to happen and that very first time you have to slip the clutch for over 30 seconds...you better have a tow arranged. Spend the money...do it right. The flywheel needs a shim whoever commented change the fork...yeah, no! It's nearly ⅜" difference between the 2 flywheels position. You won't have enough throw on the arm to have the travel for the clutch. Not trying to be a dick I've done this swap 3 times and it's going to take over $1,000 if you do it right. Drill tap bellhousing tab to accommodate the missing hole...the top hole just is what it is. Go to Novak.

The reason for the holes being different. An LS uses a 10 mm bolt and the old style Chevrolet uses a 3/8 bolt. The LS bolts are .010 bigger than the 3/8 bolt.

I’m doing the exact same think for my square body, I have the same parts roughly and it all bolted up pretty good, only issue is when I put the engine and tranny together and tighten it up to put back in the truck, the engine won’t far over. If I loosen the bell housing bolts 1/8 to 1/4 inch it bars over fine, did you have anything like this when you did it?

Darius Mitchell I believe that this will work, if I remember from Novak conversions website you have to turn down the outer diameter of the input shaft retainer. You might look at Novak’s website on their tech articles for AMC to sm465

GDT ENGINE yes I’ve been driving around for a while, I did blow out second gear but then had the transmission rebuilt and it drives amazing. I do not drive this on the highway though so if your going to daily this you might want an overdrive transmission. All that being said if I were to take out the trans again i’m going to install a th400 just because this thing is so heavy and is not the easiest to balance on a transmission jack because of its shape

@mufnsgarage87804 жыл бұрын
Clifton I did not use the steering box relocation it still sits in the stock location. I did make my own steering, after the fact I could see moving the steering box forward about an inch would be useful and that’ll happen sometime in the future. As for the rear end all I did was weld new perches on and set the pinion angle that way. Soon I will be using a different rear axle, I’ll be going Toyota because of their semi float design and dropout 3rd member.
@kegtappereiu4 жыл бұрын
Did you use the GM steering box / steering system or did you keep it stock? Also for the rear end did you just buy bigger perches and set them in the same place? I have a whole parts truck to work with so I'm trying to figure things out. Sorry man I don't mean to blow you up.

What did you do to swap the rear Chevy axle into your yj
@mufnsgarage87805 жыл бұрын
Jimmy D689 just cut off the stock spring perches, then bought new ones from Barnes 4x4 I believe. You’ll basically bolt it together unwelded and center your axle then get some of the vehicle weight on it and set your pinion angle. After your pinion angle is perfect you can weld the spring perch to the axle

Awesome thanks!

part number on that pilot bearing is 12557583. Also, if you can find a 85-87(91) squarebody chevy bellhousing, it will take a chevrolet external driver's side slave with no adaptations. The fork pivot ball will need to be swapped with an adjustable one to compensate for the 1/8" difference in flywheel location between the sbc and the LS motor.
@vandal9685 жыл бұрын

I like your build a lot. I hope to have my own ls swapped yj someday. I would like to see a video of how the SM465 performs on the road. I like the ruggedness of it but I think I might prefer something that feels more sporty while shifting. The ratios in the ax15 are more to my liking but I have heard it can’t handle the ls torque long term. Anyway, if you had the time, I would love to see a test drive with average shifting acceleration vs spirited shifting.
@mufnsgarage87805 жыл бұрын
I can definitely make a video on the road, I have the trans rebuilt now just need to install her back in. Its really the same feel as driving a square body with a similar setup. The only problem some people might have is the highway driving, but I plan on towing mine any long distance.

Sometimes the wiring harness that runs between the firewall and motor gets frayed. See if anything is grounded there or around the alternator. Also check the ground for a clean connection at the frame that's below the driver's seat area.
