Couple months back I went into the rabbit hole of looking for a power bank that can do 100W to charge my laptop and came across your channel. Watched most of your videos and didn't find any that suit my needs. Went deeper and found out about the ZMI, ended up with the QB826 (no 'G'). Difference is it can only do 100W out and 60W in. Have to say it really is pretty efficient at max output! There's still a good amount of juice left after charging my laptop. I've also been using it as a power supply with a trigger. Have it for about 5 months now with heavy use and is still amazing for its price. Got it for about $90!

Yet another great video, thanks AllThingOnePlace! I looking at the ZMI no 20. You mention safety listing for US and ZMI states it too. But of all the videos on KZbin, none actually show the UL Logo on the unit. Is there one on it some place?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 3 ай бұрын
UL writes or confirms the standards but doesn't necessarily do the testing or mark every product, they do get the recognition. In this case, SGS did the testing and marked the product. There are many companies that do this, technically all equivalent to UL.

I assume the charge level misread of the Anker is because it's using a very simple linearish voltage conversion, so that extra half an hour at the end is the constant voltage section of the CC-CV curve. Does that seem reasonable in your experience?
@AllThingsOnePlace

It does. If it strictly reads the voltage as the charge level it wouldn't know that it isn't really at 100% yet.

They all support passthrough charging. The power in that mode does vary though. The 737 is still a good power bank and ultimately has more features and a larger battery versus the 20k 200W prime. That should get you a very long run time out of the gopro. I recommend a battery in gopro still so if the power bank goes flat or a USB negotiation fails the camera doesn't lose power and lose whatever you were working on. That way you can also pull the power bank to recharge it and reconnect as needed. In terms of going 24 hours not sure if it will make it that long. I know the bigger one does. I never actually measured how much power the gopro uses (and for that matter which generation).

On the back of the Anker is says 10,000mah? What does this number mean? Is it the actual usable power? I've noticed all Anker power banks show a different number than what advertised on the back. Like the Anker 737 says 13,500mah on the back. Also you said the Anker power bank should really be a 50 watt powerbank...do you mean 50 watt on each usb-c port or 50 watts total across all ports at the same time? Thanks, love all your videos!!
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 7 ай бұрын
Manufacturers will list the capacity at other voltages, it's confusing since they sometimes have capacity estimates or losses of converters built in but sometimes don't. It would be easier if they said it can supply 60 - 65Wh of energy or something along those lines. It isn't a safety concern so never going to happen. The Anker is very efficient and makes great use of the energy at 50 watts of power. It charges at about 50 watts and doesn't get to warm discharging at 50 watts. So, in relation to the battery capacity and performance it is a sweet spot of operation. At 100 watts (one port multiple port, doesn't matter), it starts to struggle, then at the 200 watts it's marketing nonsense, minutes of operation.

@AllThingsOnePlace

The ZMI and this Anker have the mode to do that just from memory. The basic requirement is a 5 amp mode within a Programmable Power Supply, PPS output, typically devices will have between 11V and 21V maximum for the PPS mode if present. The challenge is current, if it can't do 5A it will drop to the 25W charging mode, if it doesn't have PPS then it will drop to an even slower charging mode.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 3 ай бұрын
So, the Anker 100W Prime is probably the better option as a power adapter, for 100W it is very light, you may need to hold it into the airplane seat power sockets since they are so worn out... but you get a decent amount of power for all of your devices, be careful here since it technically exceeds the power allowed at an airline seat, '75 watts', but I'm not sure it's really watts... An adapter would be required for whichever country you are going to. I used it internationally and it was great. The power bank really depends on your needs. I took the ZMI around the world also but that thing is a monster. The Iniu power banks are a bit smaller and yes, have less features, but if portable is the game, they hold up.
@AlTheEngineer
@AlTheEngineer 3 ай бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace I really appreciate your response and help. Yeah I owned the 150W Anker 747 GaN charger and I got rid of it because it really annoyed me on travel, it would basically fall out of every socket! It was so annoying, they give that little suction caps thing with it, but its not really effective as not all sockets have flat surfaces around them for the suction caps to work. So I ended up getting rid of it as powerful as it was. I think I'd like a desktop form-factor charger, as small as possible. I was watching your review on the UGREEN 100W desktop charger with removable cable, do you think there is a better one out there? Maybe higher power but same form-factor? For battery bank, I might actually settle on the Anker 537, size-wise and weight + 24KmAh at 65W might be good enough for my needs, do you have anything against that in your opinion? I appreciate your time and the reply! Thank you!

@@AlTheEngineer Yeah, the removeable cable makes sense. There are a few options out there, a lot of them struggle with isolation issues, meaning high leakage AC current through the adapter. Question... So If 100w only last for 10 min then go to 50 "or so", it should take 1hr and 6 min. Do you think it would be better to buy the 67w charger? Bcuz it should charge in 52min if it doesn't overheat. Wait 🤔 You don't think it will overheat, right? Lol
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 7 ай бұрын
The 100W charger will actually be operating in it's most efficient range where the 67W charger would be near it's maximum output, so the 100W charger is the better choice efficiency wise, 67W will probably only add a few minutes to the charge time though. I don't know why it limits the charge speed to 50W after such a short time, it doesn't get hot on the outside but better safe.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I meant as far as for this bank. 🤔 what I was lookin at though was that ok let's say even if the 67w gave me 60w constant. It's better than 100w for 10min followed by 44w for the rest of the charge 🤷🏾‍♂️ (I seen another channel charging it at 100w and it got dropped to 44w. So it's actually less than 50w) But I got the 67w on the way. I'll see what happens. Anker Gan 67w.

Which is the better buy for sustained powering of a 2017 mbp? I’d prefer the flatter profile of the ZMI but if the proper 99Wh of the Anker is best overall I’m content with that. It’d be for a mobile laptop rig when I’m shooting tethered photos to the laptop and I don’t have access to mains power, however, if there’s pass through charging of the power back when I do have access to mains power that’s an even better bonus, what’s your advice?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 7 ай бұрын
So, the trouble with all of these in pass through is they won't get you full power so I wouldn't count on that. The anker will get you a little more run time for sure. The ZMI is close though so I think it mostly comes down to your preferences and needs. If run time is above all else then Anker.

While it does allow more power out than in this should be easily address by making sure you always have a large USB C charger and don't over draw to much power from the output. In my case I will pair it with a USB C charging hub and connect my PIs up to it. The battery will always be charging more than discharging and during a power outage it will last as long as the battery. It could also be used for a "router UPS" if you use a USB C to 12V barrel Cable. Maybe a better UPS then most. The last question is value.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I am actually thinking about setting this up as a router UPS, see how it does, a regular UPS wastes several watts as well so if this is comparable to that it may even be more efficient. I just hope it doesn't try to continuously charge the battery, it'll swell that pack up fast.
@Ender_Wiggin
@Ender_Wiggin 9 ай бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Ya I am also concerned with the continuous charge problem. I now pass-through charging gets around this by bypassing the battery entirely. The question is how the ZMI does the power path management and if it can disconnect the battery completely or if the battery always has a floating 4.2V on it. It is a solvable problem but needs to be thought about at the architectural level. Also, most all-in-one IC do not support it so it is not straightforward. I have considered doing one my self for a while but unless I made many trips to China I could never hit the price point where it would make sense. With that said sometimes all these Chinese markets need is a good reference design to copy from and then the market will be flooded with cheap versions of them.

I don't think our government will ever force these companies to state legit numbers, and none of these fudgy ones. To be honest, I really don't think the 200 watt adapters are ready for prime time. If heat generation is the biggest issue other then cost, then companies should consider making the case entirely out of metal, with heat sink style fins on the sides, and make sure that the case is making contact with the transistor chips with a thermal pad between them. This would dissipate heat quite well! Another thing they could do, is install a small fan inside, like they do on inverter units. But only problem with that, is the fans would draw power off the battery, ruining your runtime, and would make noise, since the fan is so tiny. When a power adapter claims 200 watts, then I want to see a single port putting out 200 watts to power a thin and light notebook. Simple!
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, one company did put these in metal cases with fins on the outside, they had to pull them off the market for overheating still, probably like you said, not internally designed to get the heat out either. The other issue is temperature of the case. If it is a metal case it transfers heat better but that also means it transfers heat to you better so the external temperature allowed is much lower for metal cased devices versus plastic. Plastic and a small fan makes the most sense for devices that have to dissipate some heat though concerns of device lifetime then pop up. That or make it way more efficient. GaN should actually be in power banks, it's great for DC-DC converters.

Around 7:20 you comment on the “UPS” capabilities. Can you elaborate on the behavior of these? The application in which a power bank can be used depends to a large degree on what it does when connected to both a load and supply. The possible behaviors seem to be as follows: 1. Charge the battery, don’t power the load 2. Don’t charge the battery, power the load 3. Charge the battery, power the load 4. Drain the battery, power the load The Anker 737 does (2) which makes it pretty useless for all applications I have to spec for. I think you meant the ZMI here does (4), but I’m not exactly sure. I didn’t hear you say what the Anker here does, which is certainly something I’m interested in. I think many users will ultimately find that these higher wattage power banks will often be connected to both supply and load. That behavior differentiates the lineup more than most of the other attributes, currently. Thank you for all this testing, I find it very helpful.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 ай бұрын
The ZMI does 3 and 4 as far as I can tell. I don't know the internal architecture though so not sure if it can switch between states. The pack always keeps the power flowing to the output, even if there isn't enough at the input. So, with a larger load versus supply it will discharge the battery slowly. The other unknown is if it will keep the battery at float which isn't great for lithium ion batteries. The anker has negotiation issues with power in and out so does 1 or 2 depending on what was plugged in last. In the supply only case it seemed fine. I am curious if this would get stuck in a loop.
