God I wish I saw this video a couple months ago while I was in my 3D modelling class I had to model a half semi circle with a rectangular slit in it and I actually couldnt figure it out I spent over 3 hours on it and I could not figure out how to add supporting edges without having engons I gave up I never flat out give up 😭

The better questions is how the heck do you do half the smaller things here? Like duplicating and easily warping the faces

This method is so cursed even by Blender standards (like at least use some automated symmetry), but I like these videos because I learn some techniques that would make sense to use in organic, non geometric meshes.

Just curious why you left a 5 pointed ngon. Won't that mess things up?
@akkihole_5 күн бұрын
not all faces on a mesh have to be quads, in this case the ngon helps flow the topology the way he wanted and doesnt need fixing because the mesh was being subdivided, ngons can be bad and most of the time they are but they can also be useful in a lot of cases
@Mummelade5 күн бұрын
@@akkihole_ I see! I was always taught to never have an ngon. I'm so relieved to find out that they can actually be useful! Thanks for the reply <3
@akkihole_2 күн бұрын
@@Mummelade glad to see youve learned something new, a few takeaways i should mention -ngons when subdivided will be converted to quads (which is why this use case is acceptable) -ngons are only bad when unhandled, usually they are triangulated or redone into quads (most of game-ready topology is just ngons but triangulated) -ngons on flat surfaces do not affect shading for as long as the face is planar (although you should triangulate this ngon before UVing and texturing) -as a general rule of thumb, ngons should never be present in the export of your mesh, always triangulate them you're right, you should never have an ngon most of the time, but there are cases where they are useful like subdivision surface modelling of hardsurface objects, or sometimes even organics
@akkihole_2 күн бұрын

You're working on two curvature surfaces there. The solutions you're providing are barely passable as a junior level solution, as you're sacrificing clean and even surfaces/bevels for the sake of chasing minimal geometry. It works, but will get some deformation in your grander curvature and edge highlights. For some of them, all you needed to do was add an edge loop or two that follows your curvature, for others the only solution is to work on a higher resolution, and maybe other tricks like projection between smoothing levels. At the end of the day, it's a high poly sub-d form. Geometry budgets are not the concern. Perfect quality is.
