Quite literally the most underrated score ever. Might be might top 3. An absolute privilege to have seen this as a young lad of 13. Changed the way I saw and heard films. This films and its entirety is a masterpiece. Thanks for this piece!

@@mmssb7 completely wholeheartedly agree. I’m honestly not entirely sure why it was so undervalued when it first came out. One of the few scores that I find both critically and entertainingly enjoyable.

I remember when Night came into one of the meeting rooms with a CD in his hand, which held a bunch of very rough ideas from Newton Howard - but a rough track of the overall ‘Signs’ main theme was on there, too - and Night turns around, with the main theme playing those three singular notes, and he’s like “THIS is the movie we’re making!!” And he’s so excited about it, because he originally wasn’t going to have any music in the film at all. I’ll never forget that moment. ‘Signs’ was a masterclass in “less is more”. I still drive by the property every time I drive to Philly. The house is gone now, but the corn is still there, as it is now part of the Agricultural School of Delaware. Apparently, the art department was able to grow the corn so fast - faster than what was currently being taught in the curriculum, at the time - that the college left the cornfield, and now teaches the way the production grew it, instead. True story.

While I recognize Raiders to be a perfect film worthy of its many accolades and film studies, I find Last Crusade to be more meaningful and thematically mature than the original. Not that Raiders was trying to be anything other than a 1930s adventure serial, but the father-son element lent itself well to the series; resulting in more development of Indy's character. From a music standpoint, a theme that sticks in your mind or gives you chills is one thing, but a theme that reaches into your heart and touches your very humanity is a whole other skill. And Last Crusade is full of those moments. Is it any wonder why Last Crusade is also Spielberg's favorite in the series?

As a back-slidden Christian who still loves God - I love the the theme of this movie - a man who lost his faith, and thought that God had abandoned him - or maybe - just doesn't exist. When all this time, his curses turned out to be hidden blessings.
Excellent video. May I request one on Shayamalan's 'The Village'?

This was the first score I ever purchased, being a fan of John Williams and soundtracks in general. The Grail theme is probably my favorite theme in movies. Williams is able to not only create a special theme but also communicate the word 'solemnity' through music. I am still impressed after all these years. The only track I don't like, being Italian, is the mandolin part, which feels a little bit out of place. It's usually associated with the southern part of Italy, especially Campania, but it seems like too obvious of a choice to me, in general. Congrats on the video!

Fun little story regarding Empire and its music: In San Francisco, I went to a performance of the SF Symphony playing the music live to a viewing of The Empire Strikes Back. The last note of the whole thing - at the end of credits - is a fp. It's called a fortepiano, where the chord is struck loudly and held, but immediately turns quiet. The chord, in this case, is sustained and then risen in a final crescendo to a triumphant last burst. When the orchestra hit that fp and the volume dropped down, nearly the whole audience, not aware that it wasn't over, broke out in immediate applause while the orchestra was still holding that chord, which lasted for something like ten more seconds. The audience ravenously applauding and covering up the end . . . . god, that was embarrassing. As people were giving standing ovations, many of the orchestra members looked a bit disgusted. They played their asses off that night, and then that. Also, haha, when the credits started rolling and the orchestra was playing their butts off with the end credit music, quite a number of people immediately got up and started leaving as if they were in a movie theater. They just walked out while the orchestra was still playing! Imagine doing that during any other live performance of a piece of orchestral music. San Francisco, come on, I expect a little better of you.

The other thing about the score that made it difficult for Horner and interesting was the time he had to complete it. He was on a time crunch with the London Symphony and only completed 80% of the score and as a result, James Horner and James Cameron couldn't work ever again til Titanic!

Arguably John Williams greatest work. Which I know is saying a lot. When you think Yoda’s Theme, Imperial March, Han Solo and the Princess as the three big set pieces of the movie “all iconic”, most composers would of killed for one. Not to mention Battle of Hoth, Astroid Chase, Cloud City Theme, and Clash of Lightsabers. You can make the case this is the greatest soundtrack of all time. Honestly if you can close your eyes and listen to this soundtrack play out, you can picture the movie play out on screen. That is genius storytelling.

Yeah... This is a great video, it is a great video for music lovers who are kind of new to the film scores of Star Wars. In contrast, there are also a lot of things that are wrong or could have done better in this video in my opinion. To begin, the star wars soundtrack does not consist out of songs, but pieces. Calling it songs is very out of place. Also you refer to the Princess leia theme as a whole piece. You are right that Williams composed a piece called 'Leia's Theme', this piece is not played in the movie but it is a track of the soundtrack. The theme that you hear in this piece, is actually Leia's Leitmotief, that is used in the course of the entire movie. It is used like at least nine times in A New Hope. Therefore it is not entirely justly to mention that the Leia theme is not in the movie, because it certainly is. Secondly, it suprises me that there is nothing said about Williams influences like Wagner, Wolfgang Korngold and Gustav Holst. There are hundreds of videos showing us 'Rip-offs' that are used in the Star Wars music. (I think that this is just inspiration instead of rip offs, and it has also a lot to do with temp tracks and directors and that kind of stuff). What I try to say: Williams was very inspired by some other composers, he probably would not be able to compose the Star Wars score as it is now without his inspirations, but there is nothing mentioned about that in the video. Also last, there is nothing said about Williams use of Leitmotifs or Musical Onomatopoeia, what is the main feature for many musicians when analysing a film score. This is afcourse not amateur knowledge, so I do understand why you did not mentioned it, because it could make the video very complicated for non-musicians. But the use of leitmotiefs is for me one of the major things I like about the score. I would have liked it if and honestly expected that you mentioned something about that in the video, To add, there is also not said a single thing about the rich use of things as Melody, Harmony, Rhytm or orchestration, what Williams not only masters as a film composer, but as a classical composer as well. This is in my opinion the reason why the music is so grand in the Star Wars sage. I am not trying to abase you and I have nothing against you or something. But these are just some things that do lack a bit in your video in my opinion.
