I live in a small rural town in the Southwest of England. I am a refugee who brought my dog over here as he is a part of my family. The town is 99% huwite. The few non-huwite people (mostly Pakistanis and Africans) avoid us and give us weird looks, but then I do not take it personally as they do the same with other dog owners. The natives all gush about how gorgeous and well-behaved my dog is (he is the goodest of boys in my eyes). I can feel a real difference in the attitude. I do not want to live in a dog-free zone, even if I didn't have a dog. I understand some may say "Well, aren't you a part of the problem?" And I do not see it that way. I came because an actual war broke out and I waited and hoped it would end, I didn't immediately run to Europe on day 1. Secondly, I am trying my hardest to integrate and be a productive member of the community. I follow the social norms, make connections with my neighbors and also pay taxes out of my wages (I do work full time). I understand that does not make me British, but I think if you polled the people in my town or at my workplace, most would say I'm a net positive to my community. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. I do wonder why so many people clamor to large cities. I much prefer to only visit but live rurally. I can let my parcels sit on the porch for days if I'm not home, I can leave my doors unlocked overnight, my car can sit warming up for 30 minutes with the keys in the ignition in the morning without worrying about theft and I can walk out of the house at 2 am as a woman to take a stroll and not worry about about trouble.
