I seem to get alternating waves of protein vs sugar ants. The protein ants go bonkers over surfaces used to cut hotdogs.

I was so sad when they stopped making the Betty Crocker Noodles Romanoff. It was a real treat when my mother made it. Pasta Roni was OK, but not the same. I have tried the copy cat version using Kraft cheese powder. Garlic powder, spur cream and chives. It tasted very close to the Betty Crocker version.

I was using boric acid and sugar water in cotton balls in a plastic package and it worked for a while but then they started covering it up, I don't know if they figured out that it was killing them or they were some of the protein ants and don't like sugar. We have some really mean ants here the we didn't have when I was a child growing up , these things will leave blisters on a person, the ants here never use to cause injury to a person.

I feel like it would be simpler to just buy some Torx bits from the hardware store 😂 if you have a european car you'll find most of the bolts have Torx heads so buying some Torx drill bits isn't a waste.

Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) will kill any bug with an exoskeleton. The crunchy bugs. Ants, roaches, fleas, beetles, etc. It cuts them and dehydrates them. I sprinkle on ant beds, around the house, and in the garden. I have pets so it's all I use. You'll need a mask very fine particulates.

I live in the Philippines and ANTS are just everywhere in every home. I have been here for 9 years and in my house I have both sugar and protein ants. I have had American ant bait and stuff sent to me here but none of the American stuff seems to do anything. They just don't eat it or are attracted to it. Any suggestions?

This tip works great. I got my needle threader on clearance for $2, but when I followed directions it seemed like I'd wasted $2. I tried the tip and all worked fine. I did find out I can just use a long pin to scoop the loop. I have pins more accessible than tweezers. Also, sometimes when sewing buttons on, I like to thread two strands in the needle and knot 4 strands together. It is faster attaching the button. Anyway the needle threader managed to loop two strands just like it would have done with one strand. Thanks for posting the tip.

hi dennis - always love your demos. This dehydrator looks really good quality! So tthe real question is, how does it compare too your original procedure in the oven?
@MyKitchenVlog2 ай бұрын
Thanks Nancy. The dehydrator is better for two reasons. It gives me about double the drying surface and I can move it outside if I don't want the odor of fish or other food in my house. And, a better one is coming, sent to me for free to review. I'll use it to do videos for my Mobile Home Gourmet channel. -Dennis

Looks like this will be a useful new appliance Dennis! Makes me want to try the salmon jerky! We typically make our jerky in the oven but this looks like a much better option!
@MyKitchenVlog2 ай бұрын
Thanks Mea. It works about the same as the oven, maybe a little more efficiently. I want to use it outside on the deck to keep the fishy smell out of my home. And, another new dehydrator is being sent to me for review. That one appears to be a little better. I'll use it in a Mobile Home Gourmet cooking video rather than a Kitchen Vlog. -Dennis

See, the other ant killer folks always tell you to use a mix with sugar. Obviously that will NOT work for "protein ants." I put a combination of sugar and baking soda out on a trail I found by our front door and it did not do much good but then we noticed the ants often times carrying dead bugs around. This tells me (with your confirmation) that we have ants that want protein and not sugar. For Yellow Jackets I learned that they like sugar in the earlier time of the year but as fall approaches they then want protein rather than sugar. Just FYI folks. Great video and thank you.

@MyKitchenVlog3 ай бұрын
I did some research. Pharoah ants are supposedly attracted to sugar and sweet foods. Protein bait wouldn't work. You might try mixing a small amount of boric acid powder into some honey.

happy birthday, dennis - it’s so nice to see you doing well. And that vacuum cleaner sounds like it will be a worthwhile investment. I caught that very quick comment about your dad’s demise - so sorry. It must have impacted your life and that of your mother and brother in devastating ways. Grief is such an overwhelming and life-altering reality. I just lost a very special someone myself, and the grief overshadows everything. I hope the memory of your dad’s passing has become somewhat muted as the years have passed. Be well, dennis, and yes, please do more kitchen vlogs, especially political ones - your opinions are always fascinating and enlightening.

I have a much easier method. Get a can of pate cat food, or a jar of all-meat baby food. Already very finely minced or pureed. I use a plastic container food came in. Mix borax with boiling water until it's all dissolved and the water's clear. Only maybe a teaspoon of water to less than half a teaspoon of borax. Mix well with cat or baby food. Cut several triangular holes into container near top. Put bait on lid, and place container over it. You can use a rock to hold it down, or put a plant pot over it so no animals can get to it. The ants here have no interest in Terro or sugar either.
