Not yet. I believe the feature will become available at some point, especially since they want to compete with the DWARF scopes. You can take single short exposures and timelapses. Not yet good enough for the milky way.

@Naztronomy3 күн бұрын
That should be a fun experiment, let me know how it goes! I'm mostly curious if the Seestar gives you an option to "continue" stacking once you change filters. One thing to keep in mind is that the focus may be slightly different with and without the filters so you may need to trigger the autofocus before starting to image again. Clear skies!

Great review ! I am planning to buy my first smart telescope. I understand that the S30 wide angle lens can’t be used to take a picture of the Milky Way like the Dwarf 3 can. Is this correct? However, can I use the S30 in Mosaic Mode or take several pictures and stitch them together using a different software to get a picture of the full Milky Way. Please let me know so that I can make up my decision whether to buy the S30 or D3, although there is a price difference.
@Naztronomy3 күн бұрын
Thank you and awesome! And you are correct about the wide angle lens. When I asked ZWO about using the lens for Milky Way, the answer made me believe that the feature will be coming in the future. So hopefully they do it before the next Milky Way season. And also correct, you can use the mosaic mode to take pictures and stitch them together. 150mm focal length is still pretty zoomed in so you may need a lot of individual frames. But I can totally see someone doing it for small regions of the milky way at a time. I currently have no experience with the D3 (or any Dwarf lab products) so I can't comment on the differences. I'm trying to get my hands on the D3 now because a lot of people have been asking me about it but I believe they are currently backordered to at least the end of January. So aside from the price difference, you'll probably get the S30 weeks (if not months) before the D3. I reached out to Dwarflab for more information and to see if I can maybe move on up the list 😁 if that happens, you can bet I'll do a comparison video between these two. Let me know if you have more questions, happy to answer!

I am told that I can use a power bank to charge the S30 if I want to let it operate longer than 6 hours. Could you tell me what should be the specifications of the power bank for it to charge the S30 whilst in use? Thanks
@NaztronomyКүн бұрын
Yep, you can use any power bank that can provide 2A of current. When I'm not home, I use something like this: amzn.to/3Z6PXwE - works pretty well when the dew heater isn't on. When the dew heater is on, the charge goes down but it goes down slower. And when I can, I use something like this Jackery, with the wall outlet, I can get a good amount of power where it'll charge the Seestar faster than it drains: amzn.to/498eJ44 If you watch my latest live stream, you'll notice that the charge stayed at 100%. I had it plugged into a Jackery.

It looks like just pictures. Can you see a live view like you can with a Celestron 8" Catadioptric for example? So, if you put Saturn or Jupiter in view will it show it and will it look like a 10" dobsonian? And, if not what will it look like comparably?
@Naztronomy5 күн бұрын
The preview is a half second exposure so although there's no eyepiece to look through, the view is a live view (half second delay). This scope isn't good for planets, especially not compared to a 10" Dob. This is mostly for wider field objects. I'm working on a video where I'll show what Jupiter looks like (will upload in a day or two) so that should give you an idea.

you can fool the S50 and S30 if you use mosaic mode but let it in minimum mode so the time usage is 1x. you will not see the rotation
@Naztronomy9 күн бұрын
That is true and what happens in the background is that it still takes images in mosaic mode BUT it crops the mosaic down to just the 1x view. The corners end up being the center of certain frames so the field rotation smooths out. I'm experimenting with showing how that works. I'll hopefully have something ready to demo for everyone in a week or so.

I have really enjoyed your video on the S30. I can't wait until it arrives. I think it will have it's own place in my inventory of telescopes & binoculars, but I really like that I will be able to sit in my warm car while remotely operating the S30. Regarding gatekeeping….the cost of entry into astrophotography historical has been insanely expensive AND intellectually demanding. This limits the population of customers willing to make the investment. These new smart telescopes remind me of the Kodak “Instamatic” cameras of years ago, everyone could take pictures. The millions of users cause the cost of the cameras/ consumables to become cheap. The more potential customers to the hoppy will bring innovation and cost reduction that everyone will benefit from.

the moon looks over processed indeed
@tma200112 күн бұрын
Definitely get back to them on the Moon. I assume the S30 when on the drawing board was gunning for the Dwarf 2 given the price, wide FOV, magnetic solar filter and mini tripod (before Dwarf 3 was announced). Neither S30 or Dwarf 3 list the wide fov sensor but the latter markets it for astroimaging of the Milky Way so presumably its using something decent. Not sure about the S30 if its were they cut costs.
@Naztronomy11 күн бұрын
I think you're right about the S30 trying to compete with the Dwarf 2. You can take pictures using the S30 wide field but I think you're limited to its preview exposure speed (200ms if I'm not mistaken). You can theoretically do things like star trails and milky way. I'm hoping to test out both of them.

So the quality for the Moon and Sun photos is worse? I don't care about the other planets but I at least want good photos of the Moon and Sun along with the deep sky stuff. Would the videos of the Moon look better?
@Naztronomy12 күн бұрын
I think it's just the moon. Cuiv looked at the sun in his video and it looked okay. I plan to test this out with the sun tomorrow so I'll see. Deep sky stuff is normal. Just the moon is messed up. And video would definitely look better if you take it in RAW mode. Then you can debayer and process it yourself after the fact.

@Naztronomy It has that new AI feature to edit it in the app right? From what the info says on the site. Maybe that might help with the Moon photos. We'll have to see what happens
@Naztronomy12 күн бұрын
I'm imaging right now and there's nothing in the controls that I can see. I recorded my screen so I'll post that later on. But I did notice something interesting. The moon picture in this video was taken after I clicked '2x' on the seestar app to get closer and it looks overcooked. But when looking at the moon on the default 1x, it looks fine. At least it does on my phone screen. I'll have to transfer it to a computer later and confirm but it's very strange. It could be a programming error where at 1x, it's doing some ai sharpening but the moon still looks realistic but at 2x, it doubles the sharpening/contrast. The moon looks pretty bad at 4x too but the atmosphere is very turbulent at that magnification so I can't tell if it's worse than 2x. I'll review the photos and videos and confirm later. About the new AI editing feature, there is an option now to do a 'deep sky stack' in the app directly. You can pick individual images from the seestar and then stack them yourself. This may give you the AI controls. I'll have to test this out as well but this is the only place where 'AI Editing' makes sense to me. I'll hopefully get a chance to test with the sun tomorrow.
