Nice slabs Fish Yanker. Good tips in the video. In the fall and winter do you mostly use hair jigs?

Do they go deeper?
@FishYanker22 сағат бұрын
They do But they still will go shallow for the food so if you should see a bunch of shad rolling in shallow water, the crappie are probably right there with them. They will follow the big wads of bait fish in the shallows and creeks even in the winter. I like to fish the west side of reservoirs in the winter time when it gets really cold because the shad will migrate to the warm water and the crappie and other fish will follow.

Not sure where you are. In upper Wisconsin with the water temps below 40 deg, these methods don't work.
@FishYanker2 күн бұрын
Arkansas. Well they sure work here all winter even in cold shallow water with temps in the high 30s. You just have to slow things down slower than normal. The fish have to eat.
I figured out why you move location so frequently. It’s because you catch all the fish at every place you go. 👍 Can you show us your tape measure on the side of your boat? We can see the 10 and we can see the 15 but most of the fish you hold up there look smaller than the 10. It’s got to be the way the angle of the camera is showing us the tape measure. You are a good friend to catch fish for your buddy. Thanks.

@FishYanker4 күн бұрын
Follow the shad would be my best tip. if you can get lucky enough to find some nice tops in the same area with the bait fish around. If the water temps get pretty cold you might want to head to that Southwest to Northwest parts of the lake where the sun shines on the water first.

@@FishYankerman it looks like you pretty much have it all to yourself when you fish there. Is there much structure in there that you’re pulling your jigs over or is it mostly flat and open water? Another great video btw. Enjoy seeing someone catch some slabs. I’ve still been having trouble finding them consistently but the bass seem to be jumping in my boat 😂
@FishYanker4 күн бұрын
Yes sir I try to fish on weekdays and did have the lake mostly to myself but duck season has kicked in full force and there's is going to be a lot of boats. I'll still try to pick the least amount of population lake if I can. It's just easier and peaceful. But the duck hunters love these spots. I get it it's a lot of fun but I like it a little bit more quieter so I wait until they're done. 😆 Most of them hunt in the mornings that gives me a little time in the afternoons. Works for me. 😊

Ain’t no gloomy day. That’s a gorgeous day. Don’t need sunscreen or a Carhartt. Slabs are biting and the scenery couldn’t be better. I like gloomy days. Get some nitrile gloves and some disposable handwarmers. Put the handwarmers on the palm of your hand inside your gloves . Have a cotton towel to keep them dry. And a wool hat. All of this can be stored on the boat and used when needed. You can do everything with these glove as if you were bare handed.

Bought an ACC it stays at the house. Way to stiff for casting light jigs. You have to have an ultra light or light powered rod to cast light jigs from the bank. You need flex. ACC is way to stiff. ACC broom stick. Might be good for vertical jigging maybe. Bought a 7ft Shakespeare micro. Light powered rod. Way better at casting light jigs. Save your money gentlemen.
@FishYanker4 күн бұрын
You must not have tried the 6'2 dock shooter cuz it casts great. I have to agree to with you though on the acc 7 ft crappie sticks they're way too flimsy for casting. You cannot go wrong with the Shakespeare micro series though for the price. Thanks Russ
@RussFishes4fun4 күн бұрын
@@FishYanker Your right, about Shakespeare Micro Series. Got an ultra light 7ft on the way. The flat rate shipping fee of 20 dollars is what drives the price way too high for the ACC. ACC is a medium powered rod. Just to stiff for crappie, being they have paper mouths. Even with your drag on your reel turned way down.
@FishYanker4 күн бұрын
I'm not 100% sure but I think my 6-2 dock shooter was about $40 cheaper than the acc 7-ft jig Pole. So it was a lot better on price.

@@FishYanker When I "first" learned about Crappie, a older man told me. That these fish here are cold water Crappie. And as long as this water doesn't freeze over, they are going to eat.
@FishYanker4 күн бұрын
Yes sir that is true. I have a big reservoir. I like to fish when it gets super cold January, February, March where the shad get trapped in a creek by the fish and the crappie feed on them all winter long. it's very shallow spot on one end. the water will have ice on top water temps in the 30s and you can still catch crappie. it's a lot slower fishing but they're there. That older gentleman, well he is 100% correct and the main reason is they still got to eat. 😁

My lake hasnt had an 11-12" crappie come out in 21/2yrs, but 2yrs previous you catch a limit almost daily in the spring and fall, lately fish are 8-9 or smaller catch 30 to get 10 keepers
@FishYanker7 күн бұрын
Wow 😳 that ain't no good. Is it a big lake/reservoir.?
@tonyknott37896 күн бұрын
@FishYanker man made lake originally I think it was to feed a main canal in our area many, many years ago Miami Erie canal in west central Ohio
@FishYanker6 күн бұрын
I think I would concentrate on some of the good spots on the west to north west sides of the lake. The water starts cooling down a lot as our temperatures change. The bait fish will head to the warmest part of the lake and so will the fish to feed on them. When it gets really cold even shallow areas become really heavy with shad. if you noticed shad flipping on top after fishing for a little while in certain areas I would fish these areas for Crappie because crappie should be close to them. My favorite time to fish my reservoirs is when the water gets real cold and the shad move in the shallows. It's almost always on the west side of the lake for my locations. just because the sun warms it up quicker, so it ends up being just a few degrees warmer than the rest of the lake. If the fish can ever get the shad trapped in a creek or cove, they will feed on them all winter.
@tonyknott37896 күн бұрын
@FishYanker yes sir, shad activity has peaked here, still some activity. I've been fishing amongst them shad on this lake for bout 3-4 weeks on top of the water and on a high bank you could actually see them in the big balls/school, and for that many weeks fishing for crappies, only caught lrgmouth bass and channel catfish, yesterday I did catch a couple small crappie on a beetlespin, along the bank in about 13-15" of water, I was fishing creek channel feeding the lake, working fallen trees and top, and some brush close to the bank, some shallow flats and even the deep part of the channel weather as been overcast on/off rain, next day or so cold front pushing in
@FishYanker5 күн бұрын
Yes sir. maybe that cold front pushing in will activate the bigger crappie to bite. Sometimes I do real good before a front. Sometimes during the front and sometimes after, just depends on what they want to do I guess. I just keep following the shad all the way through to spring if I can.
