I truly appreciate your take on ROP. And now, today, it's Sept 2024 and season 2 is out and it's no better. Lack of love by the writers for the lore and expectations. Checking off boxes. So so true.

The viewer has to care whether at least some characters live or die. If you get 5 minutes in, and haven't begun to achieve that, you're sunk. Attractive actors, great costumes and settings are the cup, the table and the room. The writers haven't filled that cup with anything. I suspect it's because their cups aren't filled with anything. ••• PEACES!!!

You're not a real writer - if you were you wouldn't be attacking other writers to get attention. Write something GOOD and you won't need to. I love Tolkien. I teach his work and I write...grow up. This is hate campaign and you're riding the waves.

On your 2nd point: Movie teams have people whose only job is continuity. They make sure the cup of coffee stands in the same place on every take and such things. So yes, leaving this in means either they cheaped out on continuity, or they rushed the production and told the continuity guy "ah, whatever".

Amazon became what it is by delivering products. And that is how they have approached this series. Just delivering a product.

Tolkien and his work are the white supremacist bible. While in an extremely bad mood, I might say that this show is entertaining but mediocre at worst. White supremacists have never gotten the message that race is a made-up cultural construction with no scientific basis. Peter Teil quotes from Tolkien like he is quoting from the bible. If it bothers these racist subhuman orcs that is a major redeeming point right there.

I realize this video is a year old but I still think it holds up as the second season is no better than the first. The creators of the ROP don't seem to have learned anything from the lackluster response to the first season. If anything they seem to have doubled down on everything that was terrible with the first season. Now I'm no writer but I certainly enjoy Tolkien's writing style and the stories he has crafted over a lifetime. I think my biggest gripe with this show is that they are telling a story that exists already. They don't have rights to the fully realized fleshed out story so they are working off of the appendices which give the briefest outline of the second age. So instead of creating an ancilar story that fits within the timeline but does not contradict the existing story they choose to rewrite the existing story changing it drastically in the process. I just can't get beyond that. I honestly don't know where the billion dollars has been spent on this show. Everything just feels like cheap fan fiction with no budget yet it is supposed to be the most expensive episodic television show ever made.

Interesting point and feels true. I don't think a lack of love is separate from the politics of the people who made this though. They are a very hateful bunch.

The reason I WILL NOT watch it is that they had the nerve to rewrite Tolkien. I would not even care if they did a good job of rewriting Tolkien (and by all reports they didn't). If they want to write their own story, that's fine. Just don't pretend it's Tolkien. I hate it for the same reason I hate the farce otherwise known as Foundation

It is the same problem with any of the DEI-focused groups who have taken over: the idea is to make women the feature, the heroes, and to do that they feel they need to destroy the males, making them wishy-washy, feminine, unsure, ineffective, and the only time they allow strong males are as the enemy. The ploy and story don't mater, only pushing the agenda. We've seen this time and time again, in Star Wars it wasn't enough to make Ray the ultimate Mary Sue, they had to maker Luke a cowardly, craven, laughing stock who can only redeem himself by dying. Which is exactly the opposite of what you would do if your goal was really to encourage diversity, equality and inclusion. Rather that creating an over-powered woman you create a powerful group of men and women which your new heroine wants to join. Just look at Celebrimbor - he was one of the greatest smiths who ever lived in Middle Earth, and was second only to his grandfather Fëanor who made the Silmarils. Sauron tricked Celebrimbor into making the seven rings for the dwarves and the nine rings for men, but he did not know that Celebrimbor secretly made three rings for the elves. Sauron then made the one ring and revealed himself, capturing Celebrimbor and torturing him to reveal the location of the rings. He revealed where the dwarven rings and rings for men where, but would not reveal the elven rings. He died from the torture. He is one of the great heroes of elfkind. Can you imagine Celebrimbor as portrayed in The One Ring doing or being any of that?

I think another gripe of LOTR fans is that the showrunners are doing is telling the beginning of the Third Age and mashing it together with a truncated end of the Second Age. 1. There is no sense of the passage of Time that remains consistent within their clumsy narrative 2. The introduction of Third Age characters, Gandalf for one, within the truncated Second Age in which he never appears 3. The elimination of a real prologue that establishes the birth of Numenor and the consequential choices of life and death choices of the twins, Elrond & Elros. That choice was not only personal but sets in motion the different way Time and Memory affects the development of Culture of immortal Elves and Mortal Men and their eventual estrangement reflected in their use or non use of the Elvish language, Sindarin and its evolution into the Common tongues of Middle Earth. 4, Also lost is Sauron's back story, first as Morgoth's repentant lieutenant, but then falling prey to his own pride.

I agree with you, but this is not uncommon with TV. The actors are often less skilled then their movie counter parts, and less time and care is devoted to each shot. With that said it clearly could be far better and should be far better then it is for the size of production. It's not just a lack of love, more like hate, intentional destruction of a beloved franchise.

Award-winning author here. As always, when a film or book is missing dramatic structure, powerful character arcs, thematic underpinnings, appropriate color palettes (yup), and relevant world-building... ummm, yah, that definitively makes the work in question BAD. It's not a question of opinion at that point, because it'd be like having a "car" with no wheels, no engine, no steering column, and no seats. Anyone who'd still claim THAT to be a vehicle is simply incorrect. And bloody bonkers to boot. 😂 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

There's a scene in Gladiator that is the antithesis of what you talked about: Right before the gladiators are pushed out, everyone is selfish. Some are cowering, wetting themselves, most are looking out for themselves. Maximus enters the arena and gives the survivors a chance to make it out despite being faced with soldiers and predators. He leads them, ensures everyone makes it out and in the end become friends. This is the issue with Rings of Power, everyone appears to be in it for themselves. Quite telling.

It lacks any good guys worth caring about, who are the good guys worth saving? The sour lander peasants are the only men we have seen in middle earth bar the numenorians who are as a whole not very likeable then the dwarves who don’t care about anyone but themselves or the elves who see themselves as better than everyone else , Sauron might aswell wipe them all out we’ve seen no one worth saving 🤷🏻‍♂️
