'Simplistic' is one adjective. Wrong is a better one. We need 100% alternative energy supply for when the wind isnt blowing and the sun isnt shining. We already have a 15% levy on all our bills to pay for this, and it is only going to get worse. We import expensive french electricity day in, day out already to keep the lights on.

It probably takes 25 billion litres to construct these things I once saw some figures by an engineer who worked out that the 300 tonnes of concrete , 500 tonnes of steel and copper did not save 1 molecule of CO2 , because how much it used in its construction and building roads to these things, and then the power cables from them. Then new blades every 5 years. biden promised thousands of charging stations so he got $10 billion In a year and built only 8 stations . Yet again an engineer looked at the plans for these thousands of charging stations, he worked out it would take more copper than has ever been mined in the history of the world ... These people are insane
@budbud25093 ай бұрын
Just to add , the reason wind turbines get turned off when its windy is because its to protect the things. If u did not turn them off the tips would overspeed leading the whole thing to break up . Many vids of this happening, braking of the blades followed by the towers collapsing as an out of balance turbine with one blade shake the whole structure down . Nuclear and Thorium needs looking into more than at present

Greg, when the Ukraine war kicked off and our Electricity prices spiked, because gas prices spiked, many MPs, for a short period, were adamant that they would break the fact that electricty, regardless of how it is produced, is tied directly to the price of Gas. But that all went very quiet, and I've not heard anything since. Is there still value to be gained by revisiting why electricity priduced by renewables are still pinned to the price of gas, or did I get that wrong?

Good to hear from Octopus CEO Greg Jackson by video where he explains rises in energy tariff in a clear, understandable manner. At the same time, Mr Jackson offers the company’s advice on how the consumer can reduce their energy costs in ways that will help to offset the 10% price rise. Unfortunately, Mr Jackson is unable to do anything about the scrapping of winter fuel payments to pensioners like me. Nevertheless, it is reassuring to know that Octopus Energy is working hard to keep costs down and offer solutions where they can.

The government need to listen to Greg and take this very very seriously. The price of everything has shot up since the war in Ukraine. Electricity prices should not be linked to Gas prices, it's ludicrous. I note that Octopus were featured on BBC Watchdog last night (11th September 2024) for billing issues, I'm not surprised, I've had a lot of issues with Octopus over the last 12 months, particularly the figures in the App for grid export changing weeks later. Unfortunately my experience has not been positive , I still have not got a functioning smart meter over a year after installation, so despite having solar panels, batteries and two EVs I have not been able to access any of the favourable tariffs Greg mentions. To make matters worse, despite many calls to Octopus Customer service I have not been paid for any of the power my panels have contributed to the grid.
@philreilly69593 ай бұрын
Hi Greg, Everything you do at Octopus is brilliant. I'm hoping that this government will show itself to be different on energy legislation, when compared to the last (terrible) one. There is just one thing that Octopus could do better...... I've just had a Heat Pump installed by Octopus and you've been brilliant. The team were superb and a real credit to you. But now that the Heat Pump is in and working, I'm looking at the best tariff for it and I think that the one launched by Octopus (Cosy) shows that whoever thought it up doesn't understand how a heat pump should be used. To perform at peak efficiency, a heat pump should be on 24 hours a day. So the Cosy tariff, which just offers an extra cheap period compared to my current tariff (Flux) really doesn't reflect the reality of running a heat pump at peak efficiency. So my message to you, Greg, is:- "Please introduce a proper heat pump tariff, that allows users to run their pumps 24 hours a day without having astronomical bills." Please!!!

Or, do a combination of adding more wind capacity and develop better/more ways to store it. It's an interesting Q as to which major infrastructure projects will take longer - significant new nuclear or enough battery/pumped storage/compressed air/green hydrogen to run the UK for a day.
